Description of SPOT Personal Tracker

The SPOT Satellite Messenger, the world's first satellite messenger, uses both the GPS satellite network to determine a customer's location and the SPOT network to transmit that information to friends, family or an emergency service center. SPOT is a revolutionary product that is designed to raise the safety factor for hundreds of millions of people around the world.
Give your loved ones full peace of mind when you're on the mountain with the Spot Satellite Messenger. Whether you're just checking in, allowing others to track your progress, or calling for help, Spot gives you a vital line of communication with friends and family when you want it, and emergency assistance when and where you need it. Spot employs a GPS satellite network to acquire its coordinates, then sends its location to the recipient of your choice, complete with a link to Google Maps and a pre-programmed message. Unlike personal locator beacons, however, Spot does more than just call for help. The SpotChecking feature, for example, lets you notify your SpotTeam--the friends and family you've chosen as your contacts--and tell them all is well, notify them of your location, or save waypoints so you can review your route at a later date. You can also activate the SpotCasting feature to let friends and family follow your progress in real time (every 10 minutes). Anyone with access to your account information can log on and view your route, complete with virtual views provided by Google Maps. SpotCasting is a terrific feature for mountain climbers looking to celebrate their accomplishments with their loved ones.

The most important feature, however, is Spot's ability to call 911 in the event of a life-threatening or other critical emergency. Once activated, Spot will acquire your exact coordinates from the GPS network, and then send that location along with a distress message to a GEOS International Emergency Response Center every five minutes until cancelled. The Emergency Response Center will then notify the appropriate emergency responders based on your location and personal information. Responders may include local police, the highway patrol, the Coast Guard, an embassy or consulate, or other emergency response and search-and-rescue teams. Even if Spot can't acquire its location from the GPS network, it will still attempt to send a distress signal--without your exact location--to the Emergency Response Center, which will still notify your emergency contacts of the signal and continue to monitor the network for further messages.

Spot works around the world, including in virtually all of the continental United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and Australia, and portions of South America, Northern Africa, and Northeastern Asia. And provided you're in a good coverage area, Spot offers a 99 percent probability of sending a successful message within 20 minutes. As a result, Spot is ideal for anyone with a taste for outdoor adventures, including boaters, kayakers, sailboarders, archaeologists, skiers, climbers, pilots, business travelers, snowshoers, and just about anyone else.

Spot requires two AA lithium batteries, with a battery life of up to one year in standby mode, 14 days in SpotCasting mode, or 7 days in 911 mode. And thanks to the water-resistant housing (safe in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes), you needn't worry about using Spot in adverse conditions. Spot measures a compact 2.75 by 4.38 by 1.5 inches (W x H x D), weighs 7.37 ounces, and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Sports reviews of SPOT Personal Tracker

Customer Review: Works as Advertised!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

There are many negative reviews of the SPOT messenger scattered throughout the internet. Regardless of these reviews I purchased the SPOT, activated the service, and have used it on three occasions. I have not experienced any of the negative traits that have been discussed in other reviews.

This device has worked flawlessly for me. Every OK message, and HELP message I have sent has gone through. I have used the tracking feature twice - it has also worked flawlessly. My assumption is that other users have not followed the instructions for setting up the device. The first time the device is turned on, or when it is turned off, relocated over 300 miles away, and then turned on again, it takes up to 20 or 30 minutes for it to locate itself. This "startup," if you will, only needs to be completed once if one stays in the same geographical area between power ups and power downs.

I am confident enough in its reliablility that I will be taking it with me in a couple weeks for a two week backpacking trip into the wilderness. If I remember, I will post a review of the SPOT again after this trip.

Customer Review: excellent device & service at acceptable price
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

well, I purchased Spot cause I was looking for a tracker capable to transmitt your position virtually verywhere, unlike GPRS based trackers that only work where GSM coverage available.
I have tested the device for a couple of weeks The results of the testing are as follows:
The device is pretty relyable, unless you are in urban environment: in this case, percentage of successful transmissions is pretty low (according my testing), due to low visibility of the sky & contaminated radio spectrum...
However, the primary goal of the device is to be able to transmitt a distress call when you out of reach & no other way to communicate..
Field tests (out of the city) showed very good results.
Keep in mind that you should try to have clear sky view in order to obtain a succesful transmission..
the device itself is very well made: water & shock proof. simple to use.
I beleive it is a good choice for a person who whish spend time far from "civilization" & need a possibility to request help, in case of emergency.
Excellent device

Customer Review: Great service in 7 countries.
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I've used the SPOT device in 7 different countries. USA, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE, Turkey and Australia and have never had a problem at any time. I'm living in Australia at the moment and have taken it right out in the bush hundreds of miles from any civilization. I've taken it on ocean cruises where it has tracked accurately, in the middle of deserts, major cities and take it out when I go fishing on the boat so really never a problem. It really surprises me to see negative reviews. The first lock onto satellites can take up to 10 minutes depending on where you are but after that it's always worked for me. I let my friend use it on a motorbike ride trip of about 1100 miles in track mode and without fail a position update to the website every 10 minutes. I don't use it all the time, perhaps once a month but I have total confidence that should I need to use the 911 button, even here in Australia where the service centre would have to contact the local Police in the very small outback town I live in, that the cavalry will come if needed.

Customer Review: spot perfect
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

this is a great product for those that are not near a cell phone service. i ride motorcycle and hike and camp in places cell phones don't work, this satellite transponder is perfect. read carefully all the directions and choices for selection of services. you are better off calling ( in my opinion) rather than selecting options over the internet. especially to get the discounts.

waterproof, floats.

i've noticed some reviewers mentioned it wasn't with in a meter of where they were, but off by a coulple of feet. that's why you always have plan b. and it will always get you to the emergency services that you choose. make your you know what the rules are for reimbursement of recuse services. as you can get up to 100k worth of insurance with this product. for example in Arizona if they have to come and get you ( any rescue from anyone professional) you will end up paying for it.

for peace of mind, get it today

Customer Review: Can't Hide From Me!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I purchased this item to carry along with me on a motorcycle road trip through Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, etc. Every morning I used the "check/OK" feature to let my friends and family know that I was OK. Then I used the "TRACK" feature so that my location would be tracked by satellite every 10 minutes. At the end of the day I was able to go to the SPOT website and view my daily progress.

The unit is compact, lightweight, rugged, and easy to operate. The unit was turned on at the beginning of each day, and remained on for rides in length of 8 hours plus. Never had to replace the batteries or recharge them during the entire 7-day trip.

Data from this unit can be shared with Google Fire Eagle and uploaded to Facebook page to share with friends. I am very pleased with this unit, and would highly recommend it to anyone who is hiking/backpacking, camping, boating, or on a road trip (cycles or car).
