Sports reviews of SIGMA BC906 9-Function Topline Wired Bicycle Speedometer

Customer Review: An obvious addition to your bike
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I've used various bike computers, the BC906 is a basic (basic but enough) strong, reliable, easy to set up model.
The BC906 as only one drawback: the manual as been written by some kind of sadistic psychopath. On the other hand, setting it up on the bike is a 5 minutes process (configuring settings requires some zen lessons, but once it's done it's done, so...).
Under all other aspects, the BC906 does want it pretends to do : give basic data about your ride in a very reliable and precise manner (i checked for example the distance with a GPS.. perfect).
Display is easy to read (even if switching from one display set to another while riding is not that easy, because the button is small and requires a strong pressure).
On the reliability department, my BC906 as never had a single problem (I've had numerous problems with wireless computers, the wire seem to be a better solution when it comes to reliability) I even use it under the rain without problem.
For those living in an area where thieves are a problem, the computer is very easy to take away from its dock, and is very small so very easy to carry on..
My conclusion is simple : for a lot of people, and considering its low price, the BC906 is de facto requirement for a new bike. For those with a moderate sport approach it's convenient to have data such as speed, average speed, distance and so on, and even without any sport approach, it's pleasant and useful to know what distance we have covered, to have the time right in front the eyes without needing to try to see the watch on the wrist and so on.

Customer Review: Good cyclocomputer for recreational riders
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

First, since nothing on this page seems to actually list it, these are the "9 functions":
- Total distance (odometer)
- Total time
- Trip distance
- Trip time
- Average speed
- Maximum speed
- Clock
- Current speed
- Comparison of average and current speed

If you're comparing this with the BC1106 11-function computer and getting confused, the two extra "functions" are total distance and total time for a second bike. The BC1606 adds sectional trip distances, a backlight, and cadence measurements. See this page for comparing the rest: http://www.sigmasport.com/en/produkte/bikecomputer/vergleichstabelle/

Overall, it does what it's supposed to and does it well. The numbers are big enough so that they're easy to read on a quick downward glance, and the adjustable-contrast LCD display remains readable in a variety of lighting conditions. There are three buttons, which actually makes the computer more intuitive. Upper left is "Set", upper right is "Reset", and the entire bottom of the device is "Mode". You should only ever need to use the big "Mode" button while riding.

P.S. Note to other reviewers: all bike computers are "difficult to install". That's why you only have to install them once. Like all other cyclocomputers, you'll spend at least 20 minutes trying to loop the wire just right, figure out how each piece actually attaches together, and setting up the computer for your wheel size.

Customer Review: Great for what you are paying for (in my case, at least for 8 months)
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This is a great beginner cycle computer for someone who wants to take his(her) rides to another level. This was my first cycle computer and I love it until it last.

Pros: easy to install and set up, even for a complete newbie as I was at that time. Easy to read. Nice functions for the price you pay.

Cons: As someone said, you simple can't read it at night unless you are under a light or something. (In particular I didn't find this too bad as my rides where almost always during day light)

The End: After 8 months and more than 1200 miles (remember I'm just beginning!) the upper line of the 906 just disappear. I didn't get mad, I think it last enough for me.

Funny: The upper line disappear the same day I order my SIGMA BC1606L CADENCE DTS Double Wireless Bicycle Speedometer, not kidding, the same day!

If you want to give a newbie a gift, this is perfect. I already did it once. I think is the perfect cycle computer to get into a more advanced cycling, and If you like to track your performance you'll probably upgrade to a better computer after 8 months (may be sooner).

Have a nice ride!

Customer Review: Good, Simple Speedometer/Computer
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Certainly not the most sophisticated computer out there -- thank goodness.

I had a much more complex computer on a previous bike that could do my cadence, had rear wheel pickup, and all kinds of options -- but it didn't make my ride any more enjoyable. This unit covers the basics for a trip (distance, time, avg speed, max speed) and that's really what I'm most interested in. (Get your head out of your computer and enjoy the ride!!)

Mounting is simple (you'll have to adjust the mount if you want stem mounting instead of bar mounting). The computer body itself twist and locks into the mount easily, and then comes off when you need to pocket it. Spend a little time setting the spiral of the wire down your brake cable and you'll have not flopping wire. Use the longer provided tie-wraps for securing the wire to larger objects (like forks) but use some of your own to trim things up and make the installation a little cleaner.

I set my tires by taking off my front wheel, marking the tire, and rolling the wheel down a wide metric steel tape measure.

With this low price, I have no problems recommending it to recreational riders who just want a little more info.

Customer Review: Does exactly what I expect, and easy to mount
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I am so far 100% satisfied with this purchase. I really couldn't be easier to mount, and use. For 20.00 I got exactly what I wanted. It has worked flawlessly the two times I have used it and it helps push me on my bike rides. "Oh, I've only ridden 2 miles, I need to ride farther." "oh, my average speed was only 9 mph, I wasn't working as hard as I should have been"

I don't have much more to say, other than it works perfectly, is easy to setup and use, and the sensor on this particular model doesn't need to be as close to the magnet on the spokes. 5mm versus 2mm. Spokes are at a decline from the hub of the wheel to the outer rim, so if you can get a device that doesn't need such a tight clearance between the sensor and spoke magnet, it might work better for you.

The lack of need to get the magnet so close to the sensor was a big reason why I bought this unit. That and the 20.00 dollar price tag in a non-Chinese company.

Mark :)
