Sports reviews of Razor Dirt Quad Electric Four-Wheeled Off-Road Vehicle (Red)Customer Review: After 1 year.... Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
We bought two of these last Christmas for our 5 & 6 year old sons. Being a cautious person by nature, I was a bit apprehensive about the safety of a ride on like this. However, after seeing it in person at our local wholesale club, and comparing it to the quality of the similarly priced plastic ride-ons, I was sold. The quality of build is excellent. It has a heavy duty aluminum frame and pneumatic tires. Needless to say, our boys were elated (as I would have been if they had toys like this when I was small). We set up in the garage, as there was lots of snow outside. (I would not recommend this.) Our oldest strapped on his helmet, got on and and hit the throttle. Before I knew it, he had come to a stop against my now broken storage shelf. As I said, this would be much better attempted outside. After examining the quad (and the boy) we concluded no harm done, and an excellent lesson learned. The next day, we tried again outside, with much better success. The boys very quickly learned to handle the quads, and were soon buzzing around like experts.
A year later, I can say without hesitation that it was an excellent purchase. We started a very large garden, and the quads came in for their share of duty when we were picking rocks. After pulling the wagon by hand a few times, my oldest son had an idea - he ran for his quad and asked me to help him hook up the wagon. Because of the sturdy metal frame, we were able to do so, and I watched carefully to see that they started with a small load. I didn't want an expensive toy broken. The quad pulled a load of rocks and a boy no problem. I admonished my sons to not overload the wagon and they continued hauling I don't know how many loads to the rockpile. They have used the machines all summer for everthing from picking up grass clippings, to racing and everything in between.
The units have been charged countless times with no problems. We typically get close to an hour of use out of a charge for normal playing. I see that there are multiple reviews with battery issues, but this was not our experience. I don't know that it is right to down-rate the overall score for an issue that the company is apparently more then willing to take care of.
Stability had not been much of an issue for us - we had one tip-over that I can think of with no harm done. This was caused by turning sharply on a hill. I would like if there was a parent controlled low speed setting for the smaller children. A remote disconnect would also be nice for the learning period. However, even my 3 year old can now run the quads like an expert. (Although I must say, he is one of those people that can do anything he tries, so I'm not sure that this is an endorsement for all 3 year olds. I wouldn't have put his older brother on it at that age.) Just make sure that they wear the appropriate protective gear.
All in all, one of the most used toys in our household by our 3 busy boys. Nothing has broken yet, and for anyone that has 3 little boys, this may in fact be the best endorsement of all.
Customer Review: Bad start, great shop rating: 5 Stars
This is for everyone who gave this quad a bad review because the charge does not last more then five minutes or less. I purchased this dirt quad for my 8-year-old son and like some of you I was quite disappointed with the quad's charge longevity. The quad did not last five minutes before my son was wheeling it back into the garage for a charge, and it was brand new! At first I thought like the rest of you who experienced this same problem, "It was just an expensive piece of junk". But I noticed when the battery went dead and we put it on charge the light on the charger would go from red to green in just a few minutes, a lot less then the recommended charge time. So I figured maybe the charger was no good. Luckily we also own the Razor go-cart, which uses the same charger and always worked great. So I swapped out the chargers but the go-cart still charged fine. And the charger on the quad still turned from red to green in just a few minutes and still died out fast. So I went to Razor's website and contacted their customer support. They told me the problem sounded like a bad battery and explained that even though the quad is brand new it may have been sitting around in a warehouse for months, even years with the battery connected. If the battery goes a long time connected to the ATV and never on charge, the battery will eventually go bad. The battery should always stay on charge even when not used for long periods of time. They were right! They sent me a brand new battery free of charge, after I sent them a copy of my receipt proving I bought the quad within the warranty period, less then 90 days. As soon as we received the battery, I changed it out and all I can say is "what a change"! The quad is strong as can be and I could honestly say that even driving it up and down hills on rocky terrain the dirt quad lasts well past 30 minutes, about as long as my son lasts. And it still shows a full charge on the power indicator when he is done. It is like a completely different machine from the one we started out with. So to anyone here who thinks they got stuck with a piece of junk, go right to Razor before your 90 day warranty expires and file your complaint. They have an excellent customer service department and will contact you within 24 hours, you will not be sorry. I am very satisfied with Razor and even more satisfied every time I see my son's face now on his new dirt quad.
Customer Review: Conner, Gabriel and Ryley LOVE the Razor Quad!!! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
We purchased a Razor Quad, new from Amazon.com about 4 weeks ago and use it about two days a week. The above title is my Kid's names and their (as well as my) thoughts on the Quad. It does everything advertised and then some. Ours runs strong from the 3rd outing for between 50 and 60 minutes of SOLID FUN. If you aren't getting this much time as I've seen a few reviews complain about, try running in until COMPLETELY DEAD before recharging. My kids are 4, 6 and 8 respectively so the Razor Quad is almost PERFECT for them. Watch out with the very young ones though, Ryley, my 4 year old watched (and rode ONLY with big sister Conner) for the first few weeks and last Wed. she informed me "Daddy, I want to ride it all by myself". She's a smart, fearless little girl, but only weighs about 40 lbs. She listened carefully to Dad's detailed instructions and then proceeded to take off full blast and do a hard turn at full speed. Imagine my total freak out when she got it up on 2 wheels, on the left side due to her lack of sufficient weight to hold it down while engaged in her "radical moves". All turned out okay but it would not have if she'd "flipped' it over on herself. Needless to say, now she understands better why I had counseled her to "slow it up a bit on the turns". All in all, this is the coolest toy in the neighborhood and is even allowed in the local Regional Park in our neighborhood because it's electric and unobtrusive. Managing the neighbor's kids is the hardest part of having it and we use the "if your Mom or Dad will come out and give permission and participate, you can ride it" as a filter. Of course, the helmet rule goes without saying and without exception, ever. I'm still occaisionally stunned that there are parents around that won't even step outside to participate in great fun for their kids. In spite of that, the Razor Quad is far and away the greatest "kid toy" I've ever indulged my terrific kids in and we look forward to an upcoming trip out of state in two weeks and it's going along for sure! I, (as well as a bunch of my buddies) are totally reminiscing about our childhoods watching the kids ride and WISHING these things were around then.
Customer Review: Fast, Durable, Reliable and Fun! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
My son is 9 and LOVES his Razor Quad. After reading other reviews and deciding to try it for ourselves, we are so glad we did! We purchased it in January 2009. After 10 months it is still going strong after major off road abuse! The 10mph speed is awesome for an older child, and though he is tall for his age, he has no trouble riding it (nor do we!) He makes sharp turns and it has never wipped out or flipped. He maily uses it in our yard, consisting of grass, dirt, rocks, and of course some mud! We have some slopes and yes it doesn't go full speed up a hill but its not far off either. It goes in the snow as long as its not too deep as well!
The Quad has held its battery life just fine, and charges up at times each night, since he uses it almost every day. We attached a wagon to the back of it with straps and he has hauled everyting from toys, to leaves, even wood logs to help us out! Its amazing that it can pull heavy loads like logs as well! Doing work like that the charge will lesson dramatically, an hour or two and then it will be in need of a charge. You can tell when its weak as it goes slower and has trouble uphill.
My son has banged it into rocks, went over nice size rocks / hills as well as "run over" nice size twigs and cones, pretending to be a monster truck driver! With the wear and tear it has seen I honestly am shocked nothing has gone wrong with it so far. I know we have tested this vehicle inside and out! We have had other powered ride on's in the past and none compared to this one. We do keep it out of the rain, and indoors below 32 degree's... otherwise its in our shed, or stays out on nice / non rainy times.
We have pushed it over its weight limit these past months many times, between hauling things, or just from the adults testing it out. If something ever happened to it and we needed a new one, I would not hesitate to purchase another.
As for Razor Company, I have never had to call them up so can not vouch for their customer service.
Customer Review: Razor Quad Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I bought this for my sons 7th birthday. He has ridden it almost everyday for 2 months. Sometimes several times in a day. We recharge the battery in a few hours when the light on the charger turns green. Not sure if this is right since the directions says to charge it for 12 hours, but so far it works well. I gave it 5 stars because I am comparing it to the other plastic battery powered vehicles that we have. The Razor quad has a metal frame and rubber tires, this makes it very durable. It can also go places that the other vehicles cannot. We also have a Barbie jeep which is very beat up after 1 year. The Razor is alittle more expensive than the plastic vehicles but it is worth it and if you keep checking you can find the Razor at a discount. So far I have only let my 7 yr old drive it
and he always wears a helmet. Maybe when my daughter turns 6 I will let her on it as well. My only complaint is that it is a little small, even at 7 my sons legs are uncomfortable, but he still has a blast. One more advantage is that because it is battery powered it is very quiet and does not bother the neighbors. If you have close neighbors they will appreciate this.
Update 9-22-07:
The quad is still going strong, have only had 2 small issues.
1. Unable to steer - one of the nuts on the steering linkage was too tight. I loosened the nut and went ahead and lubricated all the steering joints, no steering problems since.
2. Quad slowed or stopped on its own - at first I thought it was the chain, but I just had to adjust the brake and everything was ok.
My kids all still love it.
