I am giving this as a Christmas gift because my daughter said she wanted a rainbow in her room. The product arrived in a white paperboard box with absolutely no writing on the outside whatsoever. I tested it out before I wrapped it just to make sure it worked. First of all, it was not easy to open up and I was afraid to break it when prying the lid open. The hinge is cheap plastic and does not move easily. Then the product "flashes" momentarily when it is turned on and makes a quick sound like it is powering up. I do not know if this is normal. When I set it down, it did not make a rainbow right away. Instead the image looked like a blurry smear of colors. It wasn't until I TURNED THE DIAL and rotated the reflective mirror did I get a beautiful, bright, colorful rainbow on the ceiling. I can see how someone who does not receive instructions would think this product does not work. Overall, the image was exactly what I was looking for. The shape of the product itself is a bit bizarre to me...reminds me of an egg. I can't vouch for durability because I have not used it yet, but I think my daughter will be pleased. Overall, it does the job.
Update 2/13/11: We have used this as my daughter's night light every day for a couple of months. Sometimes it runs for a full 24 hours before we remember to turn it off (we usually don't use the timer). It has never failed, even after being dropped. The colors remain bright with good battery life. I am very pleased. So glad I bought this!
