Sports reviews of Polar Insulated Water BottleCustomer Review: Perfect for running and bike riding Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I carry this bottle when I run and use the Amphipod Full Tilt Velocity running pack (I prefer this bottle to the bottle that comes with the Amphipod because this bottle holds 24 oz instead of 20 oz).
The mouth of the bottle is nice and wide, so it is easy to fill it with ice cubes and water before I start one of my two hour runs, during which the water stays cold even in hot weather. The drinking spout is easy to open and gives me just the right amount of water.
You need to decide how you are are going to use an insulated water bottle. If you need to keep water cold for more than a couple of hours, then use a steel insulated water bottle or a thermos. But those are too bulky and heavy for running, which is all that I use this bottle for.
For running this is the best insulated bottle that I have used. For the beach or where you will be drinking water over a period of more than a few hours, get something else.
For bicycle riding, this bottle fits perfectly into my water bottle holder and stays in securely.
Update 10.30.09 A friend recently asked me about the safety of using plastic drinking bottles, and this one in particular, because some plastic leaches BPA into the water. The short answer is to be sure you use a bottle that has one of the following recycling symbols: #2 HDPE (high density polyethylene), #4 LDPE (low density polyethylene), or #5 PP (polypropylene).
This bottle comes with a label that says "#4 LDPE NO BPA" so it is fine. Note that the disposable bottles filled with water are labelled #1, so you should not re-use them.
Customer Review: Insulates Well, Reasonable Price Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I purchased one of these insulated bottles a couple of months ago as I was tired of having to drink lukewarm water from my non-insulated bottles (even though I had filled them up with ice cubes before starting my ride). After having tested this bottle for a few months in the summertime heat of DC (it gets warmer here that you might think), I have to say that I'm very pleased with how it performs. I've been on rides up to two hours and the contents are still cold (albeit the ice cubes are pretty much gone by then.)
Pros: - It won't insulate as well as a real thermos bottle (of course) but it worked much better than I had thought it would
- It has a wide mouth, so its relatively easy to insert ice cubes
- It's dishwasher and freezer safe
- I put flavored drinks into it and it didn't retain the flavor after washing
Con: - You may not be able to fit the bottle in your upright water bottle holder, depending on its placement. I didn't have any problem, but your mileage may vary.
If you check the prices for the various colors of this bottle, you can usually find it for just a little more than a non-insulated bottle. (That's assuming choice of color isn't paramount for you ... the more popular colors do cost more for whatever reason.)
Bottom line ... I was very pleased with my purchase and have ordered more of them to replace all of my non-insulated bottles.
Customer Review: The best liquid container I've found so far Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I read a review of portable liquid containers on Slate.com a couple of years ago when I decided to abandon my nalgene containers. Based on that review, and some other reading, I purchased 4 different bottles to do my own testing. I usually use two daily, bringing them to work, one for water and one for iced tea or another liquid. The Slate review did not go over how easily ice cubes would go into the containers. This one and my old nalgene containers were the only ones with a wide mouth opening that would allow any size ice cube and could be used at an ice dispenser (which I use at work) without scattering ice all over. It also "sweated" the least (almost never) of the four and less than the nalgene. I can put it inside a tote or my purse and it doesn't get everything wet. I've given them as small gifts to others. One friend is a triathelete and now uses this bottle exclusively.
I have only two minor complaints about the bottles, but not enough to rate it a four. You have to figure out how to adjust the stem to be able to drink without squeezing the bottle and the removable loop handle is a bit flimsy (although none of mine have ever broken) and is easy to loose in the dishwasher. I love these bottles and they are the only ones I use now.
Customer Review: Great Water Bottle! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Since I have been starting to exercise more, I wanted to look into better water bottles then just the basic ones you get in the store. I came across these and though they may be what I was looking for, so I got one to see.
The two main things I wanted were a pull open cap so I didn't have to use both hands to open it and a wide opening to put in protein drinks or such. The cap is just like I wanted, and can even be removed for through washing. You can also unscrew the entire lid to easily put in water or such. I have yet to try and powered drink mixes with it, so not sure if they may clog or such yet.
It has some other nice bonuses as well. There is a band under where lid unscrews that can be removed (but it may be there to help with seal). It has a little loop, which can be used to clip the water bottle on to things or carry or such. It also has it's cooling feature, which is nice but I really didn't need. It doesn't work that great if you don't use ice, but still is a nice thing to have.
Overall, I think it is one of the best water bottles around. The 24 ounce one is a bit bigger than I expected (tall, about same width as normal water bottles), but it hasn't caused any problems. Still, I plan to order more then I can afford it!
Customer Review: Place in freezer, go for a 6 hour hike, contents still pretty frozen Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
To update the previous review.
I have purchased about a dozen of these bottles so I may be biased. I think they make nice gifts.
-In order to keep the contents icy, start off with cold liquid and plenty of ice cubes. If you want a big block of ice, fill with liquid and freeze in the freezer. Don't fill all the way to the top as the bottom of the bottle will distend when the contents expand. Even on a warm summer day, a frozen Polar Bottle stays mostly frozen for most of the day. Unfortunately that is pretty useless so cold liquid + ice cubes works better.
-In order to prevent leaks, screw the cap on straight. A slanted cap leaks.
-I haven't had any problems placing this into the dishwasher.
-One thing I don't like very much is the plastic handle as it isn't very comfortable to hold. It pops off, takes a bit of doing but it does come off, and can be replaced with a webbing bottle holder if you need one.
Amazon has better prices than local sporting goods stores or chains and a wider variety of color choices.
