Knowing your heart rate not only helps you reach your personal fitness goal, but also improves your physical condition in general, as it's vitally important to train at the appropriate intensity level. If you exercise too hard, you may quit before you reach the real benefit, but if you work out too leisurely, you'll struggle to lose weight at all. The A4 helps overcome these problems by encouraging you to map out a complete fitness routine.

By itself, the A4 makes a good training aid, but it's particularly valuable when paired with any Polar transmitter, as the two together offer continuous heart rate monitoring. As a result, you'll know what your heart rate is throughout your workout, rather than only when you press the button. Plus, the A4 offers all the standard sports watch functions, including an alarm, calendar, stopwatch, backlight, and target zone alarms. The watch also offers a calorie counting function and exercise file record when combined with a chest strap transmitter (not included). Finally, the watch comes with a zippered black nylon carrying case for protection.

About Polar
The first EKG accurate wireless heart rate monitor was invented by Polar back in 1977 as a training tool for the Finnish National Cross Country Ski Team. The concept of "intensity training" by heart rate swept the athletic world in the eighties. By the 1990s, individuals were looking to heart rate monitors not only for performance training needs, but also for achieving everyday fitness goals. Today, the same concept of heart rate training is being used by world-class athletes as well as everyday people trying to lose weight. Polar is the leading brand among consumers, coaches, and personal trainers worldwide and the company is committed to not only producing the best products, but also being the leading educator on the benefits of heart rate based exercise.

Sports reviews of Polar A4 Pulse Heart Rate Monitor Watch

Customer Review: Heart rate monitor
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

This product works well as a heart rate monitor. I use it in my spin class to get a quick check of my activity level. I like the fact that there is a backlight on the face so I can see the readings in the darkened spin room.

Customer Review: Quirky and Unreliable
Sport shop rating: 2 Stars

I bought this watch as a gift for my husband 5 months ago. It froze up within the first 3 months (display froze and it would not tell time). I returned it and got a replacement. My husband has since developed a theory that the problem is static electricity that it picks up through the pulse sensor. The new watch also freezes, but he has developed a technique for restarting it. This involves having to totally reset the date and time. It being winter and cold at the moment, there is a lot of static electricity around. Yesterday the watch malfunctioned and had to be reset THREE times! When it works and there is no static electricity, the watch tells time and can sense pulse rate, but unless you live in a fully grounded environment or really enjoy resetting the watch constantly, I would avoid this product.

Customer Review: Much too confusing to "program"
Sport shop rating: 2 Stars

I'm usually the one in my family that others come to for advice on all things electronic. So I'll give you the advice I'd give them on this watch - - if you are a bit dim when it comes to learning the intricacies of getting complicated electronics up and running, then don't expect the instructions that accompany this doodad to enlighten you. I didn't return mine because I hate to admit defeat, but you just might, so save yourself the trouble and just learn to take your pulse the old-fashioned way; you know, the way the nurses do every time you go to the doc's office? Using a watch with a sweeping second hand and the ability to count!

Customer Review: Finnish Technology
Sport shop rating: 2 Stars

I opened the watch and was eager to take it to the gym. After 1/2 hour of trying unsuccessfully to set the time (everything else seemed to work including my 180 heart rate!), I packed it up and shipped it back. I wanted to tell time and monitor my heart rate. Without being able to do both easily, the product didn't seem worth the money or additional effort.
