With the unique Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker, you can make ice cream while on camping trips, at picnics, barbecues, and many other places. You don't need electricity to make great tasting ice cream, but rather just add ice and rock salt in one end and ice cream mix in the other end. Then, have a ball as you shake it, pass it, or roll it around for 10 to 15 minutes. The ice cream mix can be as simple as cream, sugar, and vanilla or you can try a more adventurous flavor from the included recipe list or make up your own concoction. Made of durable advanced materials, the Ice Cream Ball is lightweight, portable, and easy to clean.

Step 1, fill with ice.

Step 2, mix up ingredients.

Step 3, shake it up.

Step 4, enjoy.
How it Works:

  1. Fill the ice end with as much ice as possible, then add 1/2 cup of rock salt to the pint size or 3/4 cup to the Mega size. The lid should be hand tightened--do not use the wrench.
  2. Mix up your ice cream ingredients in a container, then pour the mix into the end with the metal cylinder, leaving about one inch for expansion at the top. Hand tighten the lid.
  3. Have a ball! Shake, roll, and pass it around as you mix and freeze the ingredients. It's not necessary to shake the ball...just motion will do it.
  4. After about 10 minutes for the pint size and 15 minutes for the Mega ball, open the ice cream end using the included plastic wrench. Scrape the sides of the cylinder to mix up the ice cream using a plastic or wooden spoon (don't use a metal spoon as it will scratch the cylinder). Then check the ice end. Pour out the excess water and add more ice and up to 1/3 cup more rock salt to enhance the freezing ability. Close the lids securely and continue having a ball for approximately 5 to 10 more minutes (15 for the Mega).
  5. You will then have about a pint (or quart for the Mega ball) of delicious soft-serve ice cream. The consistency will vary based on the ice, your mix, the outside temperature, shaking frequency, etc. Once the ice cream is to the consistency of your liking, gently scoop it out and enjoy!

Important tips for using your Play & Freeze Ice Cream Maker:

  • Directions and recipes are inside the Ball.
  • Use cream instead of half and half for richer tasting ice cream.
  • Leave about an inch of space for expansion when you fill up the can with the ice cream mix.
  • After 10 minutes (15 for Mega ball) of mixing (shaking, rolling, and passing), it is important to stir the ice cream mix (it freezes more around the can). Also, drain the water and refill with ice and additional rock salt. Have fun for another 10 to 15 minutes and you're done.
  • Use the provided plastic wrench to open the ball, but not to close it.

Customer Review: Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker
Sport shop rating: 3 Stars

I got this so I could make ice cream with my grandkids. First let me say that I used the recipe that it came with and made the chocolate chip one. It turned out fabulous. My grandchildren loved it and one said that she had never had any ice cream this good ever...even store bought. She is 11 years old!

My grand children ranged in age from 11 to 2 1/2. The 2 1/2 was not at all interested in doing it (but did like eating it). The ll, 8 and 6 year olds did like doing it, though the 6 year old stopped for awhile. They made up games as time went on. They would sing songs while doing it. I turned on a cable music channel and would mute it as they played "musical ball" with it. The last thing they did was whoever the ball would be rolled to, would add a word to a sentence. They made up a story as they went.

All this being said, the thing that I did not like the most was that the ice cream really stuck to the sides and made scrapping down almost impossible without carefully using a kitchen table knife (which it says not to). Having some arthritis in my thumbs did not help the matter. It was a bit messy too.

Also be sure to check the top, periodically, to be sure it's still tight as it seemed to loosen as the ice cream cooled and started to leak a bit. I used 3 cups of heavy cream and 1 cup milk and it took 45 minutes to make, plus the break in between to scrape down, and add more ice* and salt. It got to be a long time for the kids and ended just about the right time for the older ones as they were tiring of it too.

*Ice...have plenty or buy a bag of ice. I have an electric ice maker and started with a full container of ice and it nearly wiped out all my ice. It took 3 days to get back to a full bucket again (with using ice normally each day).

I was surprised how it fed all the kids (5 & me) and there was still a cereal bowl left over for their parents to try. I am a big ice cream eater, but was satisfied with less...I think it's due to being so much richer then store bought, so I didn't want/need as much to satisfy my "ice cream" tooth!

Customer Review: Made ice cream on the first try- heavier than expected
Sport shop rating: 3 Stars

We tried this out over the fourth of July weekend and made some good vanilla ice cream. When I ordered this, I have thought that we would be able to stand around the yard or on the beach and toss the ball back and forth to make the ice cream. The fact is that the ball ends up being heavy once the ingredients are inside. We tossed it some but were afraid that if we missed and it hit the ground that it would come open and the ingredients would pour out. We ended up rolling it back and forth some and held it and jumped around. My family ended up losing interest because it was taking some long and I ended up shaking it trying to get it to make. It took more than an hour but we ended up with ice cream. It was neat to have made it ourselves but it did take much longer than expected. I'm not sure how often we will use this.

Customer Review: Loads of noisy fun!!
Sport shop rating: 3 Stars

We really enjoyed playing with this ball although it made a lot of noise rolling on the floor. We rolled it on carpet to reduce the noise, but still a lot of rattling from the ice inside. We forgot that you have to stop and stir your ice cream occasionally and it only froze around the outside of the cylinder. We had more of a milk shake when we were finished. I imagine openning it repeatedly would get a little messy.

This is certainly not for making lots of or very creamy ice cream. However, it is lots of fun and took me back to the days of making ice cream in coffee cans rolled across Mom's kitchen floor. This is a lot of fun for families. Makes enough for a family of 4 to share for a treat. Just don't plan on watching a movie while rolling your treat.

Good time. :)

Customer Review: A novelty item, not an actual ice cream maker
Sport shop rating: 3 Stars

Plenty of people have never made their own ice cream and find this to be both fun and useful. Having made plenty of ice cream in other, more practical but less fun, ice cream makers I realize that this is strictly a novelty. The kids have fun using it to make ice cream, but it's too small, too hard to use, too impractical, and just silly as an actual kitchen implement. If you want homemade ice cream, use a real ice cream maker. If you want a ball to kick around the backyard and want to fuss with small ice cubes, spillage, and mixing a tiny volume of ice cream, then you're at the right place.

Customer Review: play & freeze
Sport shop rating: 3 Stars

The first pint of ice cream took a long time- your arms get pretty sore. On the second pint, my son dropped it (accidentally) from about 3 feet up. It is now ruined (illustrating how heavy it really is). If I knew who to appeal to, I would try to get a free replacement, and CERTAINLY to suggest adding rubber strips to all the hard edges. This would make it MUCH more durable and keep the damp exterior from slipping through cold and icy fingers.
