With the unique Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker, you can make ice cream while on camping trips, at picnics, barbecues, and many other places. You don't need electricity to make great tasting ice cream, but rather just add ice and rock salt in one end and ice cream mix in the other end. Then, have a ball as you shake it, pass it, or roll it around for 10 to 15 minutes. The ice cream mix can be as simple as cream, sugar, and vanilla or you can try a more adventurous flavor from the included recipe list or make up your own concoction. Made of durable advanced materials, the Ice Cream Ball is lightweight, portable, and easy to clean.

Step 1, fill with ice.

Step 2, mix up ingredients.

Step 3, shake it up.

Step 4, enjoy.
How it Works:

  1. Fill the ice end with as much ice as possible, then add 1/2 cup of rock salt to the pint size or 3/4 cup to the Mega size. The lid should be hand tightened--do not use the wrench.
  2. Mix up your ice cream ingredients in a container, then pour the mix into the end with the metal cylinder, leaving about one inch for expansion at the top. Hand tighten the lid.
  3. Have a ball! Shake, roll, and pass it around as you mix and freeze the ingredients. It's not necessary to shake the ball...just motion will do it.
  4. After about 10 minutes for the pint size and 15 minutes for the Mega ball, open the ice cream end using the included plastic wrench. Scrape the sides of the cylinder to mix up the ice cream using a plastic or wooden spoon (don't use a metal spoon as it will scratch the cylinder). Then check the ice end. Pour out the excess water and add more ice and up to 1/3 cup more rock salt to enhance the freezing ability. Close the lids securely and continue having a ball for approximately 5 to 10 more minutes (15 for the Mega).
  5. You will then have about a pint (or quart for the Mega ball) of delicious soft-serve ice cream. The consistency will vary based on the ice, your mix, the outside temperature, shaking frequency, etc. Once the ice cream is to the consistency of your liking, gently scoop it out and enjoy!

Important tips for using your Play & Freeze Ice Cream Maker:

  • Directions and recipes are inside the Ball.
  • Use cream instead of half and half for richer tasting ice cream.
  • Leave about an inch of space for expansion when you fill up the can with the ice cream mix.
  • After 10 minutes (15 for Mega ball) of mixing (shaking, rolling, and passing), it is important to stir the ice cream mix (it freezes more around the can). Also, drain the water and refill with ice and additional rock salt. Have fun for another 10 to 15 minutes and you're done.
  • Use the provided plastic wrench to open the ball, but not to close it.

Sports reviews of Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker (Ice Cream Ball)

Customer Review: fun for date night
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

I received the pint-size version for Christmas. I forgot about it until I woke up craving ice cream. Now I can't get enough. The ingredients are simple and there's no hand-cranking as was the case when I was a kid. Just roll it back and forth while having a pleasant conversation. This size is just perfect for two people. I've read other reviews and must say that ours does not leak. Also, the spiderweb design on the outside is what keeps the surface comfortable to touch. Yes, the lids get tight, which is why the manufacturers included a handy tool to remove them. This rates a four out of five because the sides do get difficult to scrape down and we're advised to not use metal objects. I scrape as much as I can with a wooden spoon, then empty all the ice out and let it sit for ten minutes. At that point, the same wooden spoon handily gets the rest. We made mint chocolate chip tonight and were very happy with it. I'm already thinking of new recipes.

Customer Review: Fun family activity with a sweet reward!
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

I got this ice cream ball after seeing it on Food Network, and thinking how fun it would be for my son and I to make ice cream. I followed the directions and recipe for vanilla ice cream. Since my fridge makes crushed ice, I did not have the ice problem other reviewers have had. Mixing the ice cream halfway through was difficult because it does get surprisingly hard and frozen on the sides of the reservoir. The lid is kinda hard to get off, and it does slosh a little of the mix outside of the opening and down the sides. After the 20 minutes my 6 year old and I were ready for some yummy ice cream and this little baby delivers! The texture of the ice cream was a bit uneven- a little soupy in the middle and really hard on the sides, but a little stirring once it was out of the ball produced a smoother, more even ice cream. In spite of the little difficulties we had, its a great idea and I don't regret buying it! And we can't wait to make ice cream again!

Customer Review: Great in the classroom
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

I have used the ice cream ball with many groups of students over the past 3 years with great success. It is quick and takes fairly common household ingredients to make a batch of ice cream. We have made enough in one time around for 8 students to enjoy a small bowl. It is a great learning tool for math as well as motor skills. I was surprised at some of the reviews I read as people indicated it was too heavy to kick for fear of broken toes and too heavy to toss very far. The directions clearly state this ball is not a toy and is only to be rolled. It is not meant to be kicked or thrown. I have found that when the directions were followed, it works well to create a frozen treat in just about any location, (campground, hotel room, backyard, or classroom) that may be desired. I enjoy this product and plan to get many more years of lessons and use from the one I own.

Customer Review: It was easy; tastes great
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

I used my ice cream ball for the 1st time tonight. Took me 22 minutes from start to finish. Fortunate that my icemaker makes the half moon cubes and all I had to do was dump them in. I added ice about half way thru and stirred the ice cream at that time, and got it off the sides of the container. Carefully .. not a lot of room and it can splash. Just wandered around the house a bit and when at the computer, moved it around with my foot. Ashamed to say that I ate the entire batch ... it was great!

Customer Review: Love this thing!
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

Santa brought this for Christmas! It was so much fun and the ice cream was delicious. I didn't give it 5 stars because it took a little longer than the recommended time to freeze and the center didn't actually get solid. We drank it like milkshakes and the ice cream that lined the sides was very firm and (did I mention?) really yummy. Worth every penny! Our family of five was able to almost eat all of the contents of the quart size.
