Step 1, fill with ice. |
Step 2, mix up ingredients. |
Step 3, shake it up. |
Step 4, enjoy. | How it Works: - Fill the ice end with as much ice as possible, then add 1/2 cup of rock salt to the pint size or 3/4 cup to the Mega size. The lid should be hand tightened--do not use the wrench.
- Mix up your ice cream ingredients in a container, then pour the mix into the end with the metal cylinder, leaving about one inch for expansion at the top. Hand tighten the lid.
- Have a ball! Shake, roll, and pass it around as you mix and freeze the ingredients. It's not necessary to shake the ball...just motion will do it.
- After about 10 minutes for the pint size and 15 minutes for the Mega ball, open the ice cream end using the included plastic wrench. Scrape the sides of the cylinder to mix up the ice cream using a plastic or wooden spoon (don't use a metal spoon as it will scratch the cylinder). Then check the ice end. Pour out the excess water and add more ice and up to 1/3 cup more rock salt to enhance the freezing ability. Close the lids securely and continue having a ball for approximately 5 to 10 more minutes (15 for the Mega).
- You will then have about a pint (or quart for the Mega ball) of delicious soft-serve ice cream. The consistency will vary based on the ice, your mix, the outside temperature, shaking frequency, etc. Once the ice cream is to the consistency of your liking, gently scoop it out and enjoy!
Important tips for using your Play & Freeze Ice Cream Maker: - Directions and recipes are inside the Ball.
- Use cream instead of half and half for richer tasting ice cream.
- Leave about an inch of space for expansion when you fill up the can with the ice cream mix.
- After 10 minutes (15 for Mega ball) of mixing (shaking, rolling, and passing), it is important to stir the ice cream mix (it freezes more around the can). Also, drain the water and refill with ice and additional rock salt. Have fun for another 10 to 15 minutes and you're done.
- Use the provided plastic wrench to open the ball, but not to close it.

Sports reviews of Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker (Ice Cream Ball)Customer Review: Our kids love it. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Our girls (ages 5 and 3) really enjoy planning, making and eating the ice cream they make with this ball. The novelty may wear off after a few more uses, but we have already had $30 worth of fun with it. We liked it so much we purchased a second ball for a gift. My only complaint is that the product packaging is slightly larger than the shipping carton used by Amazon. Rather than using a larger shipping box, the Amazon employee simply crushed the packaging to make it fit in the undersized box. While the ball itself arrived undamaged, the product packaging is in such poor shape that my wife is now embarrassed to give the ball as a gift. I'm sure she'll change her mind once she sees my attractive duct tape repair job.
Customer Review: A little work for great ice cream Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I bought this to use with my kids. (Why is the pink so much cheaper?!?) We had a lot of fun with it and it was easy. We sat on the family room floor and played hot potato by rolling it back and forth. The ice cream tasted great and I used organic cream and unprocessed sugar so we weren't eating a lot of unnecessary chemicals. To get the ice cream out easier, empty and rinse out the end with the ice first. I did that and the ice cream just slid out. It then needed a bit of a stir, but it was good to go. Oh, the ice cubes from my freezer slide right in. Basically it does what it says it will.
Customer Review: It is everything you hope it is Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Ok lets be real here. You get to exercise, play with your kids, create flavors, and act a fool... WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE?
I have always wanted to get one of these and now that I have one I will never look back. It is so much fun to play with it and make some decent ice cream. Way cheaper than store ice cream, more calories burned, and unlimited possibilities. And also remember it also makes frozen yogurt, sorbet and other freezy treats! All the 5 star reviews are true. Read em. Buy one. You will not be disappointed. Charlie Sheen would say "WINNER!"
Customer Review: Five stars for the Ice Cream Ball! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I've always wanted to try this ice cream maker, but hesitated until I saw the good reviews on it. We were not disappointed. On our first try we made mint chocolate chip ice cream and my boys said it was better than the store bought kind. We used heavy cream and it took 20 minutes to make (we might have been able to stop at 15 minutes as the ice cream was very hard along the cylinder). We just rolled the ball around the living room floor and it was done before we knew it. This is definitely going on camping trips with us!
Customer Review: Do you have a large dog? Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Seriously. Do you? My friend bought me this and added a note with it: "thought your puppy might like to play with it"
Now, I have a large dog. A doberman, to be exact, and the large size ball is just the right size to entertain him for a good half hour as he knocks it around. He likes it because it's heavy, it's noisy, and it's cold. I like it because after half an hour of him tuckering himself out, I get ice cream. Everyone wins with this folks. Get yourself one today.
