Step 1, fill with ice. |
Step 2, mix up ingredients. |
Step 3, shake it up. |
Step 4, enjoy. | How it Works: - Fill the ice end with as much ice as possible, then add 1/2 cup of rock salt to the pint size or 3/4 cup to the Mega size. The lid should be hand tightened--do not use the wrench.
- Mix up your ice cream ingredients in a container, then pour the mix into the end with the metal cylinder, leaving about one inch for expansion at the top. Hand tighten the lid.
- Have a ball! Shake, roll, and pass it around as you mix and freeze the ingredients. It's not necessary to shake the ball...just motion will do it.
- After about 10 minutes for the pint size and 15 minutes for the Mega ball, open the ice cream end using the included plastic wrench. Scrape the sides of the cylinder to mix up the ice cream using a plastic or wooden spoon (don't use a metal spoon as it will scratch the cylinder). Then check the ice end. Pour out the excess water and add more ice and up to 1/3 cup more rock salt to enhance the freezing ability. Close the lids securely and continue having a ball for approximately 5 to 10 more minutes (15 for the Mega).
- You will then have about a pint (or quart for the Mega ball) of delicious soft-serve ice cream. The consistency will vary based on the ice, your mix, the outside temperature, shaking frequency, etc. Once the ice cream is to the consistency of your liking, gently scoop it out and enjoy!
Important tips for using your Play & Freeze Ice Cream Maker: - Directions and recipes are inside the Ball.
- Use cream instead of half and half for richer tasting ice cream.
- Leave about an inch of space for expansion when you fill up the can with the ice cream mix.
- After 10 minutes (15 for Mega ball) of mixing (shaking, rolling, and passing), it is important to stir the ice cream mix (it freezes more around the can). Also, drain the water and refill with ice and additional rock salt. Have fun for another 10 to 15 minutes and you're done.
- Use the provided plastic wrench to open the ball, but not to close it.

Sports reviews of Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker (Ice Cream Ball)Customer Review: Buying another - wore the 1st one out Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
We bought one for my brother for Christmas a few years back and my stepmother ended up buying them for the entire family. It does seem to take longer to get a harder ice cream than predicted in the instructions, but you will eventually get it.
The great thing about this is that you can create your ice cream to your specific tastes or even sugar free. And you can shake it up until you receive your desired consistency as well, depending on if you like a soft serve or a hard scoop.
We have a family camping trip every year and we all pack them and make different flavors to share and we have a blast with throwing them around and playing games to pass the time.
I have never had it seal shut, nor drip everywhere or any of the other complaints I have read here for this item. It cleans and stores well and I am buying my 2nd one to replace the 1st that we wore out and then dropped accidentally for the 16th time finally cracking the ball. But it is tougher than you might think and has survived some serious tumbles and even survived a kick into a tree :)
Customer Review: Get the kids away from the computer games. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I borrowed 3 friends kids ages, 9,11, & 13. They love my house because I'm cool with making a mess. The hot summer made me thing of making ice cream, having something to shake should wear them down, right? Well it does keep them very busy with the shaking and rolling, AND the Mad Scientist part of deciding what flavors to make let them be more creative as well. The resulting flavors were all great and the texture was very thick. As soon as one batch was ready they would scrape it out and start the next one since each kid HAD to have their OWN flavor. I used the 1 quart Glad plastic containers for each batch to store in the freezer.
The kids need to be at least age 7 and above if they are going to lift and pass it. The ball doesn't roll easily on our lawn but they put a quilt down on the hard wood floor and rolled it to each other. The nice thing is that unlike the electric home ice cream makers you don't have to store in your freezer.
Maybe a whole class of kindergarten kids could use this by rolling it on the floor.
Customer Review: For the People Reading the Negative Reviews: Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This is a wonderful product. The item was never intended to replace the electric ice cream makers. It was made for people who go to parks, beaches, camp outings, anywhere there isn't electricity. It does take some time to make the ice-cream and it is small (I bought 2 to make up for this so I can also make two flavors) but it is wonderful to be able to go camping and have ice cream when it's blistering hot outside. Kids love it. They sit down and roll the ball back and forth to each other to make the ice cream. So if you have any bad feelings about the negative reviews, just remember that this product was not intended to be used in your kitchen. I love it and it's wonderful. I make ice cream cakes for birthdays when we go camping and it makes great slushie mixed drinks for the adults. If you want something for the kitchen, this isn't the ice cream maker you want. But if you enjoy having ice cream at places you normally couldn't, this is a great product.
Customer Review: BEYOND THE BEST! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
We had a family camp out with our church family with many kids this ball was the absolute hit of the entire camping trip. We have the large one that make enough for about 6 small bowls (two scoops) of ice-cream per each "session". We got to the camp site with all the hills, the kids rolled it up and down the hills while we set up camp. When we were done we had ice-cream! We added in coffee creamers for the variety of ice-creams...all in all we had 6 different kinds of ice-cream that everyone old andyoung enjoyed....PLUS the kids were passed out early from being tired from making ice cream.. The anticpation as to when the ice cream would be done was AMAZING.. We use the very simple recipe: 1 pint 1/2 and 1/2 with 3/4 sugar, then added power coffee creamer..then they were off. Only down fall is remind them to come back to scrap the sides .... but honestly it made sure we keep them close to camp.ENJOY!
Customer Review: great ice cream, fun, EASY! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Have NO idea what is wrong with some people that they can't figure this easy item out and have fun making this and out playing with their kids or spouse while doing it! We own 2 of these ice cream balls and LOVE them, and have had none of the problems that some stressed-out, unhappy with their lives, people have mentioned. We watched a video on you tube first on how to properly use one of these before we purchased, followed it and the instructions and viola, excellent tasting ice cream. We've made: cherry and chocolate, lemon, raspberry; added extras too like m&m's, reeses, etc. Have a great time making it several timea a month, NO problems at all. You just have to have the sense to read the instructions and do it right! Highly recommended and FUN!
