Sports reviews of Platypus Sport BottleCustomer Review: Awesome in every way! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I bought 2 of these about 10 yrs ago and they have received periods of intensive use and long periods in the cabinet and they have held up great! I have gone through a lot of hard water bottles over the years but can't think of one that I have had for 10 years! The only issues I have had is the caps have had to be replaced (which is cheap and easy!) because I bite them to open the bottle leaving teeth marks on it and so they are hard to get clean. This is not unexpected and the caps have so far been easy to find. The other 'issue' is that I left one in a cooler with some nasty stuff and forgot about it over a weekend and after I cleaned it up the bottom (outside) was stained. I almost threw it out but that was two years ago and it has been fine (just looks dirty on the outside).
I read one of the reviews saying they are hard to clean and to that I suggest 1. they sell a cleaning kit, 2. if you never put anything but water in it you should be fine cleaning it with hot water. I never use soap b/c it is too hard to get out and I always think I can taste soap. I bought cheap effervescent denture cleaning tablets and fill with hot water and break a tablet in half and drop it in and leave it for a bit and it always tastes fresh and clean!
Another thing I love about them is that I can fill 3/4 with water and freeze them, then use them as icepacks in my soft cooler. I go out on a boat everyday and take a soft cooler and ice packs take up half the space, but if I use frozen platypus then I get the same cooling plus cold clean drinking water all day and extra space in the cooler! Simply awesome.
The only 'down side' is that it is kinda floppy and awkward to drink out of when it is half full. This is better if you get one of the neoprene sleeves (which also cuts down the condensation and keeps the water cool). When I am out on the boat I mostly use it to replenish my hard water bottle which works out great. It is a minor thing when you consider the trade offs of it being collapsible and freezeable!
I also think the fact that I freeze them everyday and they have held up really speaks to their durability. I read one review that said they fell apart after a few years and hope this is not b/c the quality has gone down in the past 10 years since I bought mine... I am getting more so guess I will find out!

About Platypus The Platypus sport bottle is from a company named Cascade Designs, started by three friends and former Boeing engineers--Jim Lea, Neil Anderson, and John Burroughs--who were laid off from the aeronautics giant in 1971. Outdoor enthusiasts looking for the next great gear idea, they went on to design the world's first self-inflating mattress, the Therm-A-Rest. Today, Cascade Designs remains a private, family-owned company that has grown to be one of the most respected outdoor manufacturers in the world. The company has achieved that distinction through a combination of the Therm-a-Rest brand's enduring popularity, the acquisition of strong companies with superior products and shared visions, and by sticking to the same fundamental principles Cascade Designs was founded upon: providing relevant and innovative products, exceptional quality, and service that exceeds customer expectations.
