I find this to be really useful.
Yes, you could bend a hanger or other wire object to serve the same purpose, or you could do what I used to do, and that is use a tie-down or velcro strap to hold the in place. But I like this in that it can be taken off/put on with one hand while the other hand holds the bike or tools. Also, it's coated so that it won't scratch the frame like a coat hanger can.

Before I grabbed this beauty, I had no idea what I was missing. It's a simple simple tool that holds the handlebars in place so that's it's absolutely in line with the frame of the bike.
Allows you to perform maintenance without any problems at all.
Just awesome... I have no idea how I did bike maintenance before I had this!!

OK, a bit pricey for a piece of coated metal and a strip of velcro but considering what we pay for bikes nowadays (and assuming you're also getting a good bike stand) wouldn't you rather have a sturdy non-scratching handle bar holder while doing bike maintenance than a jury-rigged clothes hanger? Works great - makes working on a bike a lot easier when it is in the clamp. I also use it when hauling my bikes on a rear mount bike rack to keep them from scratching each other. I recommend.
