Sports reviews of P90X: Tony Horton's 90-Day Extreme Home Fitness Workout DVD ProgramCustomer Review: Great product! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I just got this system a few weeks ago and I could not be more pleased. I was in pretty good shape all through college and for about 5 years after that but when I let my gym membership lapse I kind of let myself go as well. I have done everything from boxing, ultimate Frisbee, weight training and so on and I never really saw my general health and fitness improve as quickly as with this plan. I hope that when I finish up with the program in two months that I can kick some tail and make some miles out on the Appalachian Trail during my next section hike!
A word about the "Meal Plan Approach" for the nutrition plan; it is WAY too expensive to buy all of the ingredients that the meals require. If you are trying to get fit and yet save a little coin you should try the "Portion Approach" as it gives you a little leeway with how you handle the meals within a budget. Also, keep in mind that just like with any fitness regimen, you get out what you put in. If you do not eat right and you slack off during the workouts, you are not going to improve anything. You had also better have a good place to do pull ups, a decent set of dumbbells or resistance bands, a mat for sit-ups, and about an 8'-0" by 8'-0" clear floor space because Tony really makes you move. When they say you have to meet minimum fitness requirements before even THINKING about doing this, they are not kidding around.
Also, here is a quick heads up for the buyers out there. Typically the sellers that are trying to pass of the "downloadable" PDF forms are people who only own the DVDs and are trying to make it sound like they have the full product. They buy one "full" copy of the books and then get their hands on a hundred copies of just the DVDs and then scan the one set of books to PDF format, make a hundred copies on CD and sell them with the workout DVDs as a set. This is, as far as I know, illegal because they do not have permission to copy this information for resale from Beach Body and you should avoid them at all costs. Also, the PDFs have a tenancy to not work because they know if they get caught selling an actual illegal copy of the information they could be fined or imprisoned. I got my full and completely legal copies of these DVDs and the books from ebay where they have made an attempt to censure all sales involving the "downloadable" PDFs because of this infringement. As you can see from my profile, I am not selling anything and so I have no interest in telling you this other than to prevent Beach Body from getting ripped off. They have put out a really good product and I think that should be rewarded with real sales and not piracy.
Customer Review: Fantastic Program - you won't regret it! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I'm so amazed that this program worked as well as it did. I thought "another infomercial" - and I *never* buy infomercial items. But something inside told me to give it a try and I broke down and ordered it off Amazon. I didn't even want to tell anyone I bought it because I thought "I'm not sure I can do it and I don't want the embarrassment of failure". But if I can do it then anyone can.
It took a couple of weeks of lighter workouts to "work up" to being able to do these - but maybe that was more my courage working up than my fitness level. And even now that I've fully completed all 90 days I still have to "press pause" through many of them to take an extra 30 second break. But I am in the best shape of my life and am VERY excited to be starting the program again for a second round. I've lost 35 pounds so far (let's just say I was vary round before this - and very out of shape).
I had a personal trainer years ago. I could only afford that 3 days a week and over a summer I got in pretty good shape. With P90X I'm in better shape, faster. But I am working out pretty much every day now (at least 6 days per week).
Pros:
* Great variety - can keep using the program after 90 days if you want without being bored
* Great production quality
* Tony (trainer) has a great personality
* Cheaper than a Gym Membership for a year
* Easier and less embarrassing than going to the gym
* Your "better half" won't be able to keep their hands off of you
* Lower blood pressure, greatly increase fitness level, feel younger
* Intense (hard) workouts
Cons:
* Need 60 - 90 minutes, six days a week
* Need to dig deep and "press play" each day. Motivation was hard the first 2 - 3 weeks but then got MUCH easier as you see and feel the results
* You can use fitness bands, but you really will want a full set of dumbbells for this (guys especially = $300+)
* Need a Heart Rate monitor (Amazon = $30 - $60)
* Solid floor to workout on (if you live in the upstairs apartment you may not be loved during the "jump training")
* Intense (hard) workouts
Bottom Line: If you can be self-motivated for the first month - FORCE yourself to do it EVERY day - you won't regret it. You'll eventually look forward to it and you'll feel GREAT. And all the compliments you get won't hurt either.
Customer Review: Great Product But Make Sure You Are Buying The Real Deal Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Before I get into the review of the P90X I noticed many comments about not getting the manuals and other written materials or being sent links to download the stuff and having to print it yourself. Be aware that there are a lot of pirated copies of P90X out there. Be very careful who you buy from. There is nothing wrong with buying a used copy if in fact that's what you are getting. But if you are promised original material and instead receive download instructions you probably have an illegal copy.
As for the P90X itself, this is not a program that will get you into shape. If you are not already in shape the P90X is not for you. I would recommend the Power90. Get through that and MAYBE you can do the P90X. This program is for those you are in shape and want to take it to the next level. You'll burn, you'll sweat, you'll swear at Tony. The amount of variety is great, you won't get sick of doing the same thing over and over as with so many other programs.
Every part of your body will be used (and sometimes abused). I didn't know much about Plyometrics but I sure do now. I didn't figure I was a "yoga guy" but I tried it and found it essential to overall fitness.
Even if you think you are in decent shape it may take you longer than the hour or so for each of these workouts. That's ok, use that pause button. Just don't quit. And before you know it you'll see the changes, you'll feel them. The nutrition guide is useful. I didn't have great eating habits but I found if I was going to work my butt off for an hour there was no way I was going to put junk into my body.
Some have mentioned the "high" price. I say what price do you put on being incredibly fit? It's cheaper than a gym membership, you don't have to pay a few hundred for one of the gimmicks that will (maybe) tone one part of your body.
They also have a good online forum where you can share your experiences, get some tips, get support if you are struggling, it's very worthwhile.
And don't think you are too old to get in shape. You are never too old. I am in my 40's and now I'm in better shape than I was 20 years ago. Far better.
The bottom line is this is not some "do this for 10 minutes a day, 3 days a week and look like a model" pipe dream. It's HARD. But it WORKS.
Customer Review: Great Workout Program For Baseball Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I am in my early 40's and was looking last year for something to get me in shape for baseball season. I picked up P90X and went through the program before the start of my 2009 season. All I can say was that the results were fantastic. My body didn't undergo a life changing transformation, but I saw vast improvements in my endurance, flexibility, explosiveness, strength, and balance. I don't know of any other workout program that can improve your fitness in so many ways. I improved my game on the diamond in every way imaginable. My defense vastly improved... I hit better....I went from 3 stolen bases in the last two seasons combined to 16 in 2009....I even pitched a no hitter at age 42.
I did not realize how bad my balance was until I did P90X. The Yoga disk and, to a lesser extent, the Kempo and Leg Workout disks make you focus on balance. I actually had to wear knee braces for the first month of the program because I thought I would tumble during a lunge and rip something. Having better balance means I move better on defense and can control my body more when pitching.
Also, because this program is DVD based, you can take it with you when you travel. Just put a disk into your laptop and do your normal work out. All you need to take with you is the Lifeline Power Up Chin-Up, perfect for doing pull ups in a hotel room and Nike Push Up Grips . I like the Nike push up bars because you can break them down for easier packing into a suitcase. Throw in a set of strong exercise bands and you are good to go.
Lastly, the P90X package contains a book that describes each exercise and lists all of the exercises (in sequence) included in each disk. If you miss your workout at home, you can take the book to the gym and do each routine at your own pace.
P90X is a great program if you want to get in better shape and a fantastic program if you want to better your athletic performance. I am doing it again before my 2010 season. I plan to switch to Insanity at the start of the season to focus on endurance and core work. The opposition won't know what hit them.
Customer Review: Worth It, But You MUST Dedicate Yourself Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
To start off, this workout routine is the best I have encountered. I've never been someone who wanted to spend 15 minutes driving to a gym (and back), as workouts have never been that "exciting" to me - it's hard enough to motivate myself to do it, so a drive doesn't help. Thus getting something you can do at home is the perfect solution.
Most workout DVDs are hard to take seriously and give it the time, but P90X is just the opposite. I started it about a year ago, and right from the beginning Tony keeps telling you to just keep pushing play, regardless of your mood. It worked - I found myself returning each day.
I love the variety the DVDs offer. Personally, I love the workouts for the upper body, find the Yoga DVD extremely hard (tiring on my arms), and the cardio DVDs are decent. You will certainly find routines you like more than others, but overall they are decent or great. Tony is a great instructor - he is goofy and enjoyable. Some people who watch the DVDs find him annoying, but I enjoy his goofy comments and can quote most of the DVDs by now (he is very quotable). If you are not like me, the DVDs have several options to remove Tony's voice, queues only, music only, etc.
You will feel the pain. After a few weeks it will get better - I promise.
What I want to stress the most is dedication, however. If you buy this routine, you really must choose to make the commitment and dedicate yourself to doing the workouts, and doing them properly. I highly recommend that you grab various weights (different amounts) or a set of adjustable weights (best option in my opinion). It's a much larger initial investment to get your weight set / adjustable weights, but it's well worth the money and will make your workout results amaze you. I initially was going to just use the couple pairs of weights I previously had but soon found out that I really did need a larger range for the various exercises.
If you get the DVDs, keep hitting play, and follow the nutrition guide (my hardest part), you WILL see results. I assure you. It's hard work, but if you want results then have no fear - they will come (and pretty fast compared to other routines).
Simply put - buy these DVDs. You won't regret it.
