Sports reviews of P90X: Tony Horton's 90-Day Extreme Home Fitness Workout DVD Program

Customer Review: Tony, where were you 20 years ago?
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I am a 3-time P90X graduate. All I can say is, "Tony, where were you 20 years ago?" I am in better shape now, at 38, than I was in high school.

No, I don't exactly look like Tony Horton. At 50 years of age that guy is a fitness freak of nature. And, I don't believe he got that way simply by performing only the P90X exercises.

But, I do believe in P90X. I used to have a Total Gym. I went as far as I could with that product. It worked great and I would highly recommend the Total Gym for beginners. But, eventually, I stopped seeing any gain using the Total Gym.

I took the chance and ordered the P90X program. P=power, 90=days, X=extreme. I thought I was in good enough shape, from using the Total Gym, to jump right into P90X. It took just one workout to prove that theory to be false. It took me 2 hours to complete that first hour long DVD. Whoever invented the "pause" button is now my best friend.

After the first two workouts (the second being Plyometrics!!) I was sore for a week. I could barely walk. I hurt in places I didn't even know I had. But, I kept up with the program. Working out through the pain. And, I completely changed my diet in accordance with the P90X diet plan.

That first 90 days was tough. There were many times I wanted to sue Tony Horton for attempted murder. But, I stuck with it. And, before I knew it, the 90 days was over, I had lost 12 pounds of fat, and my body looked better than it ever did.

I took two weeks off then started another 90 day round. Amazingly I found that I was able to keep up with Tony's intensity. And, my weights increased. I finished that second round of P90X and was just blown away at the changes in my body. I took another two weeks off then did P90X again. It wasn't long before that third round of P90X was done. Unbelievable.

I am now in the middle of my own workout routine based on the P90X exercises. I hand picked the exercises that I enjoyed doing and that seemed to work the best for me. I still work out an hour a day, doing three rounds of the hand picked exercises per day, and I only workout 5 days a week now.

I am fully convinced in the ability of P90X and what it claims to do. It hurt and I thought I would die. But, I stuck with it and obtained some amazing changes.

This program is NOT for people who have never exercised or have let themselves go. You should be in some kind of reasonable shape before using P90X. Start with a lower intensity workout routine by Tony first. Then move on to P90X.

Also, I bought a set of dumbbells. I tried using the power bands at first, but I found that they were just too awkward for me. The weights worked better for me.

Customer Review: Changed my Life and Mindset! AWESOME!

Before I got this I thought the ab muscles in 300 were a digital special effect. I though there was no way someone could be in that sort of shape.

I'd seen the infomercials a few times and was skeptical. 90 days and I would be super fit? I'm really skinny.

But then I thought, "I guess it makes sense. If you workout everyday for an hour or more, and eat right, you should get really fit." If the infomercial was telling me I just had to workout every other day for 15 minutes I wouldn't believe it, but it was really asking me to commit to something.

Now I'll tell you it is a huge commitment. I did it for 4 weeks and then started school and did not have any free time to do it. Most of the time it would take me 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete the workout. But in those 4 weeks I made so many muscles. My face got thinner and muscles I didn't know you were supposed to have showed up.

I didn't use it for about 18 weeks when I was really busy. I thought I lost everything I did in 4 weeks, and then I started again. After 1 week everything I had before came back. I've been doing it now for 3 weeks, so I'm only 1 month into it, but let me say I'm getting awesome fit. I am so excited. I am happy to be where I am just after a month, but I might as well go for superfit.

It is an extremely intense workout. You do what you can and you get better. The ab workout is about 3 days a week, 16 minutes long, but is the most intense thing ever. After a while though you can feel the muscles you are building and it feels great.

I don't want to just be a muscle head, so I'm glad core, cardio, and yoga are included. This actually really turned me onto Yoga. The whole thing, exercising and everything has really pulled me out of the more depressed state I used to be in. I feel so good about myself now.

I did spend a lot of money getting set up. I bought bowflex selecttech weights. I bought bands to simulate pullups. I bought pushup stands. I bought a yoga mat. I spend about $20 a month on recovery drinks. I use accelerade which is great, keeps my muscles from ever aching. I spend about $20 a month on vitamins.

I am very impressed. I would say my physique is now rival to some guys I know that work at gyms and take tons of weight gaining supplements. I see some of these guys with tiny legs or shoulders or weak backs or abs. I'm getting the full workout here. I'm even surprised how much muscle I've been putting on without supplements. I am also a vegetarian and just eating lots of fruit, vegetables, and whole grains.

IT IS WORTH THE INVESTMENT OF YOUR MONEY AND TIME. IT IS HARD WORK, BUT IT WORKS.

Customer Review: P90x - How I loathe you
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

So, my wife and I decided to give this P90x thing a try. We finished day 3 yesterday. I think I can safely file this decision in the "overly optimistic" category (like the time I said "yes" to dodge ball with middle schoolers...but that's another story). Here's my brief synopsis of the experience thus far:

Day 1: We decided to start with the plyometrics disc. Tony (the leader-whom I have officially declared to be my arch-enemy) pointed out that one of the guys on the video had a prosthetic leg. Assumption: how hard could it be if a one legged man could do it? Stupid assumption. I collapsed around 40 minutes into it. I was no longer the boss of my own legs. I realize that the following sentence isn't exactly politically correct; but, I don't care. I hate that jolly one legged man.

Day 2: I decided to go with the "chest and back" disc as my legs felt like jello and were barely functional. My wife was initially opposed to this disc because she wanted to avoid getting a muscled-up "man back" (as she so eloquently put it). I assured her that this wouldn't happen to her...and warned her that it might not happen to me either. Apparently each workout includes a "warm up". This "warm up" included things called jump-lunges. I hate Tony. As for the rest of the workout....I, again, ended up sprawled on the floor-like a dead man-after semi-completing countless push-ups. Pain. So much pain. Not only am I unable to walk like a normal human, I am now unable to lift my arms to floss my teeth.

Day 3: I sifted through the discs and found a disc titled "Yoga". YES. This one had to be easy. I knew a fat guy in college who took a yoga class to meet women (didn't work). Assumption: if he could do it, surely I could also. Horrible assumption. Apparently all yoga is not the same as P90x yoga. It's as if the P90x trainers thought to themselves: "By now, the people who are stupid enough to do our program probably have ridiculously sore legs, arms, and shoulders. I wonder how we can intensify that pain until our participants cry.......OH, I KNOW! Let's make them do 90 minutes of yoga!" I did something called a "downward dog" until my soul hurt. Realization 1: I am not flexible at all. AT ALL. Realization 2: Yoga is not what I thought it was (a style of peaceful, calming stretching and breathing). Yoga is not peaceful at all. Yoga is designed to punish you for not being flexible. I hate yoga. I hate Tony.

I'll admit, before beginning P90x, the thought crossed my mind: "the wife might be impressed with my strength & athleticism". Wrong. Unless, of course, shouting various insults at the tv whilst lying motionless on the floor is "impressive".

P3x down. P87x to go. Bring it on.

Customer Review: It's the real deal
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I've made it through 10 weeks of the program, and if you stick with it, it works. I am working through the "Lean" program, and plan to do "Doubles" when I finish my first 90 days.

As you will probably read in other reviews, there are some good things and some bad, and a lot that is open for debate. First the negatives: It takes a lot of time, especially at first if you are not familiar with the exercises. I set aside 90 minutes for each weight-routine workout, (which inludes time for the ab routine).

I was physically fit and active (I play recreational hockey), but was carrying an extra 30 pounds of fat. I found that some of the exercises were difficult at first, but trust me that it gets easier as your body begins to change. One thing that I really like about P90X is that it's a total body workout, and includes a lot of stretching and flexibility exercises, along with increasing muscle mass and replacing body fat.

Here is the debatable topic - Tony Horton can be really annoying. He uses the same jokes in many of the videos and it can become tedious after a while. That being said, his mantra of "Do your best and forget the rest" really resonated with me when I was struggling, as well as his continued encouragement that it's okay if you can't keep up with the people on the video - eventually you will. I actually kind of like the guy, in the way that you like that HR person who makes you do the trust exercise at the retreat.

At this point, I can't imagine going back to the eliptical trainer four days a week. I think I'd be bored out of my mind. I look forward to my daily workouts and plan to continue with P90X for at least one more round. In ten weeks I've lost almost 20 pounds, but more importantly I have reshaped my body and gained an incredible amount of flexibility.

One other point I should make. There are several diet options. I chose to count calories based on eating a specific number of portions from the various food groups (it's all in the diet book). One mistake I made, was that I did not increase my calorie intake in phase II because I was satisfied with the 1800 calories and wanted to lose more weight. Big mistake. My body went into starvation mode and I didn't lose any weight for three weeks until I increased my calories. So, I would suggest that whichever food plan you choose, stick to the guidelines unless you really know what you're doing. I didn't.

So, my summary is that this program does work, but it takes a lot of time and committment. There is no substitute for hard work, but if you stick with it, you will see results, but also keep your expectations real. You're not going to go from blob to buff in 90 days.

Customer Review: Awesome program to get to the next level of fitness
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I want to start with this: This is NOT a program to help you get into shape if you have never done any exercise or if you are obese or have knee or joint problems. Hip Hop Abs is a good program for newbies because it's fun and not very difficult. Before you buy this program take the fit test which you'll find here: [...]. But this program is perfect for someone like me, an older out-of-shape but formerly fit woman (or man).

I'm 57 and was an aerobics instructor until I was about 45, but after retiring I let myself go, gaining 20 pounds and working out a day or two a week. I have worked with a trainer but didn't really find that inspired me, and my regular gym workout that I've done for 30 years has become very boring. I had purchased the Hip Hop Abs program so I was familiar with Beachbody and had seen the infomercial and I was curious about P90. When my 31 year old colleague said she had started the P90X program it inspired me to purchase it myself.

Today was my first workout. There are three programs: Classic, which focuses on muscle-building; Doubles, for serious athletes, and Lean, with more cardio to help lose weight and burn fat. I'm doing the lean program so I started with "Core Synergistics."

I thought I might have to buy a lot of equipment but I just used a towel and my yoga mat, and a couple of exertubes I had lying around the house. I'd like to get a pullup bar but it won't fit in my exercise room so I'm going to use the tubes (bands) instead and for a woman I think that will work fine. Men will probably want a pullup bar. You'll have to have some weights too eventually. Here are some things I like about the program:

1. It's not exceptionally hyped up. Tony the trainer is serious about the workout and gives lots of tips for form and also for adapting the exercise to your own skill level.
2. I could do almost every exercise at least a few times. I like that I can do it now, and later I'll be able to do it better. There's lots of room for improvement.
3. I never got bored. Every exercise lasts no more than about 5 minutes so you're always doing something new.
4. Somehow there's the feeling of being in a class, even though it's a DVD. You laugh at the jokes, and feel almost like you're in the room at the end congratulating everyone for hanging in there.

So if you're already somewhat fit, or if you once were, take the fit test and see if this is for you. If you can pass the fit test, this is an awesome program so far. If I'm disappointed as I go through the program I'll update this review, but for now I'm sold.
