Customer Review: a full workout package

In preparation for a Biggest Loser Contest we are having at work I wanted to up my fitness level. I stumbled upon p90x and was skeptical form the infomercial videos. After much research I got my hands on this program and showed it to my wife who said she'd do the P90X Lean in order to support me.

We've both been going at it for two weeks now and really enjoy the variety of workouts. The first week was very difficult, but by week two we both are already feeling stronger.

I was nervous with the Fit Test, but when I read in detail the expectations I knew I could do this work out. . .well, barely but do it nonetheless.

It's hard not to get discouraged after two weeks when in the mind's eye one expects to have week 12 results already. But we are keeping on regardless.

1) I highly recommend you view all videos BEFORE doing the program so you don't waste your first time through scrambling around for weight, bands, etc.

2) I love how you need very little equipment to get a good workout. The $20 pull up bar at Walmart is fine if you have doors that give you the wide grip. I personally bought the Maximum Fitness chin up bar for $40 because it supports wider doors than the Iron Gym. The SPRI bands on Amazon are awesome!

3) You do NOT need the recovery drink UNTIL you burn off the excess fat.

4) The eating plan is easy to follow! Basically the first month is an very low carb Atkins diet to burn off the stored fat. Then the carbs get a bit better in month 2, then in month 3 you are eating normal meals with a good balance across. I was surprised at how many posts I found where folks did not follow the diet plan. It's 90 days folks...just follow it.

5) I converted the videos for my iPod and have been able to get some workouts at work in our work gym since there is very little equipment needed.

6) I struggle to keep remembering to do the Ab Ripper X on Mon, Wed, and Fri. Even the calendar doesn't have it by default, so make a note somewhere for yourself to add this in if doing the Classic program.

7) I LOVE that the fitness guide has every exercise listed out for you and how to do it (including warm-up & cooldown). Last night I was watching TV with the wife and did my workout by simply following the book. . .it did help I've done the workout once before so I knew what they meant when reading the book.

8) I could see myself doing this program from Classic to Double to Lean or some combination. After that I may try Insanity workout.

OVERALL:
- lots of variety
- uses body weight for most strength training
- even with equipment purchases it's cheaper than a year's membership at a gym. . .thus it's well worth it
- portable even if you are traveling (take your bands & fitness guide with you)
- getting rid of the junk food in the house without eating it before the program will be the difficult part, but do it!
- if you start to get bored, do Jillian's Last Chance Workout or No More Trouble Zones...those are two challenging workouts just to give a change of scenery

Customer Review: Yet another P90X success story....
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I've worked out at least 5 days a week for the past 15 years, trying a variety of routines. P90X is by far the best and most challenging routine I have ever attempted. Anyone looking to burn excess fat and gain lean muscle need look no further -- it is all right here.

My advice is to take your time the first few weeks. P90X sells itself as a "90-day" program, but the uber-fit people you see in the infomercials have actually gone through the program a few times. Myself, I've done the program once and though I've seen definite changes (especially in my arms, shoulders, and calves), I'm not at the "Bruce Lee-fit" level of the program-graduates shown in those infomercials. At least not yet! I've now started the program again...and I can only say it continues to be challenging and rewarding. So then this is a justified expense, as P90X isn't a one-time thing.

Each of the main workouts is pretty hard. I'd say the Week 1 "Chest and Back" workout is the toughest. There is a lot of variety in each; it's a shame there's only one Leg workout...especially given that you do it every week of the program. My only complaint is the cardio portion of P90X. Simply put, I found none of them challenging. Except for Plyometrics, of course! That is by far the BEST cardio exercise ever. Which just makes it all the more unfortunate that the others (ie CardioX, KenpoX) are so basic. And, really, easy. Even YogaX doesn't do much for me...and this program eats up enough of your time already. Who has time for YogaX's 90-minute workout? Instead of this and the other lackluster cardio routines, I did Billy Blanks's "Taebo Get Ripped Advanced" (do NOT knock it until you've tried it...it's the only cardio workout that comes close to Plyometrics).

Speaking of enthusiastic hosts, Tony Horton is a "hoot," as the natives say down here in Texas. Personally I enjoy his constant dialog; it floors me that the man can rattle on WHILE he's performing such strenuous routines. It does get a bit tricky, though; several times he's caused me to laugh while I'm doing an already-dangerous exercise. Sometimes you have to tune him out or he might cause you to laugh, you might drop your weight, and great injury might ensue... I also appreciate how completely obsessed he is with Dreya Webber (who appears in a few workouts with him, most notably the "Legs & Back" routine); her husband actually produced the music for P90X, so it becomes a strange sort of love-triangle, with Dreya's husband doing the music, Dreya sucking up to Tony on-camera (watch how she only improves her form WHEN Tony's looking at her), and Tony basically fawning over her.

So then, here you have a demanding but rewarding fitness program which will certainly give you results (there's no way you WON'T get results if you go through this program), plus it gives you some comedic value. My only complaint, again, is the lack of good cardio programs...but since it DOES have Plyometrics I still say it's a solid 5 stars.

Customer Review: Wish I found P90X earlier!

At the risk of repeating what's been written before, I wanted to provide my thoughts on P90X.

To provide a little background, I'm a 46 year-old male and have been working out consistently since 2001 at the YMCA. (The Y's in Middle Tennessee are fantastic!) Back then, I completed the Body for Life program from Bill Phillips and lost 40 lbs. Since then, I've maintained through moderate workouts and martial arts. I typically worked out 2-5 times per week. So, I thought I was in reasonably good shape.

In January this year, I had a close friend turn me on to P90X. Let me tell you that it is a fantastic program. I have seen major improvements in muscle tone, strength, and stamina. As has been said before, I would definitely recommend that you be in decent shape before taking this on. Even though I had been working out consistently, P90X tore me up at the beginning. If you are pushing it, you will be SORE during the first week and probably the second week as well. When the routine changes again in week 5, you will be sore again.

I'm not saying that you can't do this program if you are not in shape. I've got friends that hadn't worked out for decades and are doing it. But, you will not be able to complete the workouts. You will have to work your way in to it.

It has certainly been worth the price. When I think about it, I would call it the best investment in fitness I've ever made. For a couple hundred dollars, you can get all of the instruction and equipment you'll need to take your fitness to a new level. The price of the DVD's and necessary equipment is far less than expensive workout equipment or even a year's membership at a health club. This is truly a bargain.

One of my big concerns before starting P90X was working out at home. I've tried it before and failed because I just couldn't seem to push myself. But, P90X pushes you by setting a very aggressive pace and Tony Horton does a good job of motivating you. However, he can get a bit annoying.

For me, the most difficult aspect of the program is the diet. It requires way too much discipline for me. To do it right, you need to do a good bit of food prep the night before. I have children and I just don't want to take time away from the family to make meals for the next day. Also, my wife doesn't like the idea of me eating something different for dinner than what she has prepared. My recommendation would be to try something similar to the diet in Body for Life which is 6 small meals a day. It still takes some discipline. But, it is far easier to do than the diet in P90X and still brings good results in combination with the workout program.

My recommendation is to get P90X if you are serious about getting results. I would say the dropout rate is high because it is so darned difficult. But, you will get great results if you stick with it.

As most of the reviews have touched at length the strengths and drawbacks of p90x, I'll try to tailor this to my own personal experience.

Before p90x, I had been going to a gym 4-5 times per week, and for many years had been mostly plateaued with my workout. Growing increasingly impatient with my lack of results and getting further listless with going to a chain gym, I felt I needed a change. From the first moment of playing the videos, hearing Tony Horton's upbeat encouragement, the stark differences between this workout routine and your old, stagnant gym visits becomes apparent. You'll be panting, sweating, gasping for air and gulping down water -- if you can even keep up.

The first week of p90x is a difficult week. When you workout to plyometrics, you'll know what I mean. I've considered myself someone in good to excellent shape for many years, and around half-way through the second day, I had to pause the video, hands on knees, and make the pact with myself that I would finish plyometrics no matter what. Since that moment, I've been completely sucked into the routine of p90x's daily workouts.

The workouts are fun and varied enough to keep you from getting bored. What amazes me the most is the perfect spacing between muscle groups worked. Now I am tired and sore in certain areas for an entire week, but when I start to feel a little more limber in that area, it's time to work it out again. But that doesn't mean you'll be tired and lethargic at work; on the contrary, you'll have more energy, feel more flexible, and be able to do some pretty extraordinary athletic moves before long.

On the variety of p90x, you'll do standard muscle group workouts but in creative and fast-paced ways. I haven't touched a barbell or weight in months, as I use the elastic bands and pull-up bar, and my body has improved dramatically. Further from the muscle group workouts, you'll have fun, rewarding routines such as the aforementioned plyometrics, yoga (Get a mat!!), and Kenpo. These workouts are a little daunting at first -- if you asked me to do warrior 3 into half-moon yoga positions for 2 straight minutes months ago, I'd have laughed at you -- but you'll get better and better each week and feel PROUD with what you're accomplishing.

I've hooked so many of my friends on this workout, just as it was passed to me, and I have to extol the amazing virtues of its fantastic creators and their routines they so masterfully crafted.

Your life will never be the same after you start this program and stick to it. You'll be craving Tony Horton's expert physical tutelage every day. I can't recommend this program strongly enough; every second on this program, you're getting stronger, faster, badder, meaner, and leaner. Get x-like, you're wild in your cage and you're about to be set loose.

Hello my name is Jake and I have finally finished P90X. It was not easy to get started. I received the dvds from a friend who bought them for reasearch she is a physical therapist. She said you have to try these you will love them.
Before P90X I was always a gym kind of guy you know MP3 doing the bench press curls triceps seldomly legs and treadmill. Now I got these dvds about a year ago. I quit the gym and started using them but it was really hard for me to work out in my apartment at first. I was only doing like 2 to 3 days a week. which was enough to maintain my current fitness status. But it was wierd at first for me to have to listen to dvds and just to want to hit play. For me going to the gym was like I am here lets work out. At home the phone rings or something else came up and I would not do it.
After a while I quit working out. I weighed 193 when I quit working out and after 3 or 4 months I went up to 212 yikes. I needed a change and I knew if I would just do the workouts they would get me into shape. So I finally did it all the way through never missed a day that I did not make up. I got to tell you I feel great I no longer miss the gym I know what to do with the dvds now so I got my MP3 back and I am enjoying these DVDs greatly and I just bought a weighted vest to do my second full set of P90X.
Results..... Started at 212 ended at 184 no 6 pack but after my next 90 for sure My stomach is solid. When I started I did not take all of my measurements I wish I would have. I measured my arms started 17" now 17 1/2" and way more defined. stomach 40" ended 36 1/2". I did not ever measure my legs but forget about it my hamstrings are huge and my quads are very defined. For the first time in my life I have somewhat of a calf muscle. My shoulders are the biggest and the most defined they have ever been. Which makes you look so much bigger than you really are. The only set back was my chest it went from 47" to 45". I did use to work my chest very often and very hard at the gym. The pushups did seem to shrink it a lot but I could do about 30 pushups when I started I can do over 60 now. Pullups 6 kind of now 18 good ones. This is the best shape I have been in since I use to box which says a lot.

In closing I would suggest this to anyone who is serious about making a change. It works and it is really fun once you get the hang of it. You know get use to jumping around your living room while your wife looks at you like you have gone mad.

I would suggest Power Block dumbells I love mine they are the best dumbells I have ever had.
Supplements..... Whey Protein Creatine it will make you gain 5 or so pounds at first but it will go away. Multivitamin Green Tea Vitamin B12 and B6. Buy it it is awesome
