Sports reviews of P90X: Tony Horton's 90-Day Extreme Home Fitness Workout DVD ProgramCustomer Review: Bottom Line Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I'm nearly completed with the program, and I've waited until now to be confident in this review. Here's the facts, as I've found them to be over the last few months.
Does it work? Yes. The infomercials we've all seen are the real deal.
Will it be too hard? Depends. I'm 22 years old, and was in good shape going into the program. The first weeks are intense, but I didn't feel too overwhelmed. You'll grit your teeth, and the sweat will come off in waves, but isn't that what you're after?
Time commitment: just as the brochure states - plan on at least an hour for the actual work out. I'm currently a first year optometry student, so my life is filled. But with a little discipline, I made it work - you squeeze in the workouts whenever you can, taking every opputunity you find. If you miss a day, make it up later.
What you can expect: just what they promise. Although, probably the more out of shape you are, the more dramatic your results will be. If you're already in good to great shape, I'd look at this program as a razor blade that trims you up, and gets rid of the fat in places you don't want it. Are you going to bulk up? Maybe - this program is more designed to rip and trim, not to necessarily make you huge. If you want to lean up, this is your ticket.
Can you still do P90X and be involved in other athletics: For me, yes. I was doing every workout, and still doing 40 miles a week on a road bike, and training for 5K's on the weekend day off. But I didn't have any team sports, etc, that I was involved in. Again, I would imagine it depends on your level of fitness. As an afterthought, I can't think of anything better for an athlete to add to their off season training than this program.
Cost versus value: Spending a few hundred dollars on the DVD's, the weights/bands, the pullup and pushup bars, etc, may seem annoying, but consider the following if you chose to go the more "traditional" route:
Gym membership (six months): ~$200
Personal trainer: ~$20 for an hour
Transportation to/from: $$$?
So, you're spending just as much money to leave your home, spending extra time to get ready, go to the gym, change clothes, workout, shower, return home, etc. So, literally, you're spending roughly twice as much time, and way more money to do the same thing that you could have accomplished by popping a DVD into your machine, and doing what it says. Going with this program means more money in your pocket (in the long run), more time to spend on other tasks, and simply less hassle. Besides, gym's are distracting! Focus on your workout and the results thereof!
Ways to fail in this program: I can think of two. First, not being committed. The results shown come to people who are pushing the play button every day, and giving their all to each and every workout. Even yoga;) (which i've truly come to value over the past two months). Second, not eating right. This might be your biggest stumbling block. Fortunately, the workout comes with an eating guide. Follow it.
Bottom Line: If you've ever wanted to truly "get in shape", then stop reading this review and buy the product. Do it for yourself and your family. I'm getting married next summer, and I want to be the best I can be. Being this level of fit affects more than just you. Do it for your family, your future. This product works. Above all, it motivates you to be your best. Work hard, and you won't regret the investment. The concepts are simple, but they work.
Enjoy the journey.
Customer Review: Helpful Information for the Prospective Buyer of a Certain Age and Body Type Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
It is a very peculiar feeling to provide personal information in a public review, but I think it will be very helpful to someone thinking about buying the P90X.
First, I am forty-three, and have engaged in no significant physical activity for a number of years. I drank quite a lot until about four months ago, when I became a "teetoaller." I smoke about a pack a day, Marlboros. Since the first week of June, I have also been walking about 45 minutes a day. Since giving up alcohol and walking, as well as watching my diet, giving up sodas, and not snacking between meals, I went from 220 to 200 pounds in about three months. When I bought the P90X, however, I did not do my research well. I was by no means ready for it. This is a very, very intense workout series for someone who has been more or less physically active to a degree for some time. If, like me, you have been largely sedentary for a long period of time, not to mention less than kind to your body, this is not the workout for you - yet. But, here is what is working for me, right now.
I bought the "Ten Minute Trainer" through the same manufacturer. These are thity minute workouts that I am using to "recondition" myself, and it should take about nintety to one-hundred and eighty days, I am guessing, when I will be ready to tackle P90X, and with with no expectation I will be able to complete them on the first couple of go-rounds. But, does this mean the P90X is sitting on the shelf? No. The P90X stretch DVD and the P90X yoga DVD are wonderful to start slowly unwinding those muscles I have not been using for many years. And they are very challenging indeed, but not making me gasp and gulp for air.
When I attempted the P90X series, though, I noticed two things. One, every part of me was sore. So, I have no doubt this is a comprehensive body program. Second, I did feel more energized. I have very little doubt that this product works as advertised if used properly in conjunction with proper diet.
So, if you are athletic or semi-athletic and in reasonable shape or more advanced, I think you will really, really enjoy the challenge of the P90X. If you are not in this group, like me, then what I would strongly urge before you spend the money is something like the "Ten Minute Trainer" or low impact exercises over a period of time with a good, sensible diet to get back into some semblance of shape, and THEN try the P90X. I am not looking at these purchases so much as a "ninety day transformation" as opposed to a "six month program." IGNORE the visual advertising, and just enjoy the challenge and feeling much, much better, mentally and physically.
If you buy this, however, also be aware that certain DVDs move very quickly through routines. I found this extremely annoying at first. But the simple way around this is to preview the DVD first and that will solve any problems in becoming familiar with the routines. Some people also found Tony Horton's personal style off-putting, I know. I do as well, but that's just because I tend to dislike people who are "perky" or body-obssessed. But the man plainly knows whereof he speaks when it comes to exercise and I adjusted to his gleefulness without much problem. And, if you are really charged by people who are "motivational" and relentlessly positive in their approach to exercise, you will love him. But for heaven's sake, don't let trivial personal factors like that affect whether or not you should buy this product.
Highly recommended for the appropriate consumer.
Customer Review: EXCELLENT, but buy directly from Beachbody! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I'm now in my 8th week of this program and it is exactly what the infomercial says it is...GREAT! I was watching CNBC one Sunday morning and saw the infomercial on this. After my husband suggested to me that we should be trying something different, like shock therapy, for our workout routines, this caught my attention and I checked it out online, where it showed up everywhere as being the real deal. So, I ordered it. The only reason I didn't purchase from this seller, or anyone else from Amazon, is due to the negative feedback I read about the DVDs, what came with the set (or more aptly what was missing), etc.
Even with Beachbody.com, 2 of the DVDs didn't play well. I called Beachbody and they sent out a new DVD for one of the 2 poor-quality DVDs. For the other, it was at the end of the video during the cool-down so I didn't bother. There are more, as I got the P90X-Plus, videos that I haven't used so I'm hoping that they are all okay or I'll be calling again.
Be ready with a ton of aspirin and about 1.5 hours per day to do this program. You'll be stopping many times through the workouts, and you'll be feeling it. I've been weight lifting for over 20 years so thought I was in very good condition, and bored with my routines. I'm amazed at how this has worked muscles in completely different ways, and how I'm so SORE after using what I consider to be very little weight.
Also, be ready to do the nutrition guide as closely as possible, it is a real key to real change. You need to be ready for that. I use a heart rate monitor and I'm not burning as many calories as they say you burn, so I'm not eating as many calories as they say to eat. If you have knee or back problems, modify the workouts, as well. It is a very intense workout.
Every routine is different, my favorites being Plyometrics, Kenpo-X, and Yoga-X. If you want to liven up your routine and really step up to the next level this is it.
I would definitely suggest resistance bands, yoga blocks, yoga pad, etc., for this workout. I found I really needed them. The back routine incorporates a lot of pullups so you need a high place to use the resistance bands from, as they do on the DVD, or buy a chin-up bar for the door (although I, for one, need something with assistance), or an assisted tower (this is what I did, but I have a full gym at home).
The one negative I've found is the chest workout is done only once a week, on Monday. No regular chest routine is done so unless you can do MINIMUM 50 pushups in all different ways (including 1-arm pushups), full-out, which I can't (I start on the toes and end up doing them from my knees), you might not get what you expect for the chest workout. They probably do about 100 pushups but I haven't counted. I'm just going to add some chest workouts in after I finish the routine. I also think this program is more athletic than strictly mass building. That's just fine for me. Those pumped up guys in the video might be doing other workouts along with this.
All said, I love this routine and will continue it after the 90 days, first with the PLUS videos, then with some of the routines I downloaded from Beachbody.com that incorporate the routine with regular weight lifting, to continually change things up. I've decided I will ALWAYS do plyo, kenpo, and yoga once/wk with whatever routine I do (maybe even core synergistics) because they are so good. Just those, themselves, make P90X worth it.
Customer Review: GREAT value Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
As with any exercise product (especially those shown in informercials late at night when you're gorging on Doritos and thinking it would be nice to have a six-pack....... abs or beer...), it's completely worthless unless you choose to change your lifestyle and commit to the program. But if you're willing to take it seriously, you can't beat P90X.
Not only does the program come complete with specific nutrition information, a variety of workouts and an interactive website, but Tony Horton is always saying "Do your best and forget the rest" and reassuring you that even if you can't do the current workout now, you'll be able to do it in a few weeks if you stick with it. And he's right. Strength and endurance grows very quickly and if you follow the diet plan, you'll see results quickly.
I pause to mention that I started P90X over a summer where I could eat for free at work and so did NOT, in fact, follow the diet guide. Consequently, I didn't see the results that many people post online. HOWEVER, as a test, it was a success. Why? Because even though I wasn't as streamlined as I could/should have been, I've seen HUGE leaps in my strength and endurance and definite change in my physique. So using the diet guide correctly, you should see amazing results.
The workouts are TOUGH and some are LONG (an hour and a half of Yoga), especially if you're relatively new to working out. Most likely, you won't be able to hang with some of them all the way through even after two months - but this is a great motivator, as long as you don't let it get you down! There are two camps about Tony Horton's training style - you either love how corny he is or he gets annoying quickly. Either way, his motivation far outweighs whatever you may think of his style and the handy time bar and visual prompts for each exercise make it easy to follow what's going on should you wish to use your own music mix and turn down the video volume.
Another great motivator, by the way, is the included DVD "How To Bring It" where Tony shows you a short version of how the whole system works and gets you excited about doing the program. On days when I truly did NOT want to exercise, I'd force myself to watch this DVD and a bunch of the P90X Results videos posted on YouTube for inspiration. It never failed.
I HIGHLY suggest purchasing an array of weighted exercise bands at the same time you purchase P90X. They're mandatory unless you already own or plan to buy both a pull-up bar and a full set of dumbells. You won't be able to do the program unless you have these.
The website is great for not only planning and recording your workouts (which is a great motivator) but for connecting with other people using the program and getting answers to questions you may have. There is an additional fee to use some of the online things, but you can set up a profile and do many helpful things for free.
I never thought I'd work out at home and I certainly never thought I'd use an exercise video. But if you commit to pressing play every day, you quickly find that the workouts are so engaging (and sometimes so difficult) that your brain goes on autopilot and you put all your energy into the workout instead of wandering around a gym waiting for a bench to open up or trying to remember what comes next in your routine. Well worth it.
"Come on, come on, Bring it! X me!"
Customer Review: P90X rocks Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Apologies in advance as I'm going to sound like a total beachbody shill in this post.
I just finished my 12 weeks last Friday and think P90X is great (continuing with a second round of the program). It is a big time commitment - workouts range from ~1 to 1.5 hours, and if you're doing a post workout shake or drink and showering, you're talking upwards of a couple hours most days. But it's totally worth it.
The tone of the DVDs is just right. Tony Horton's approach pushes you as far as you can go without going overboard and his attitude is great. The workouts are definitely tough at first (some of them are still tough for me at the end), and I thought I was in respectable shape. I'm not used to hammering the same muscle groups for an entire hour. But it gets results. I lost about 10lbs in the first six weeks and my entire body looks different.
You do need to make a decision on equipment. A pull up bar is a no-brainer as it only runs around $20 to $40 and is used heavily throughout the program. I got one at a local store that hooks on a door with no screws, etc. The tougher decision is dumbbells or bands. Dumbbells get expensive very quickly regardless of whether you get individual ones or fancy adjustable ones, but I believe they'll get you better results. I looked into the fancy adjustable dumbbells quite a bit to save space but was concerned about ease of use, durability, and stories of them breaking and plates falling on people's heads. So now I've got a $500 collection of nice Weider hex rubber-coated dumbbells in my living room. Just bought the Apex 3-tier dumbbell rack to organize them.
I really like working out at home. You don't have to deal with meatheads at the gym, people not cleaning up after themselves at weight stations, feeling self conscious if you need to take a break during a class/routine, or having to drive somewhere else after work. One note here, depending on your living situation you may need to schedule the Plyo-X (jump training) workout when your downstairs neighbor is not in, or do that one somewhere else.
Rather than go all-in on the diet plan that comes with P90X I decided to just take cues from it. Following it to the letter would take a huge amount of planning in my opinion. I grabbed a few meal and snack ideas from it and tried to come with a diet that followed the "portion" plan. I'm eating much healthier now than I ever have.
Overall I'm thrilled that I decided to give this a go as it's become a staple of my daily routine. This takes a lot of discipline - there were days I was exhausted, or hung over (why did I end up putting plyo-X on Sunday), and it was not pretty. But it's a great program. Also impressed with Beachbody overall. Their products seem like the real deal (both videos and accessories). They also send occasional newsletter emails with actual useful information/tips in them.
I second the comment made by someone else to just purchase this straight from Beachbody. When I got it three months ago it wasn't much more (if at all) expensive and then you know you're getting everything, new, unmessed with.
(update, a little over a year later)
Just finished my third round of the program yesterday, and started my fourth round today :) . Still loving it!
