Sports reviews of OnGuard Brute STD 5001 Bike U-LockCustomer Review: Locked in a great price at Amazon Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
The OnGuard Brute STD 5001 bicycle U-lock is a theft spoiler. It locks securely, but opens smoothly with the key. In NYC, bicyclists either use a lock such as this or face a very high risk of bicycle theft. This lock is highly recommended.

very solid U lock with just enough space. It is not very heavy and the holder does a good job of not dropping it but it does wiggle a bit, nothing some velcro cannot fix. Very intimidating lock.
Customer Review: Works like a charm! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Works like its supposed to! Good price! Seems pretty strong. No one's stolen my bike yet!
Customer Review: Good Security for the Price Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
Likes:
- Probably the best security for the price range.
Hates:
- It's heavy, but that's the trade-off for good security.
- It's large, and, when mounted on its bracket, barely fits inside my frame's front triangle. I had to remove the bottle cage.
- As others have mentioned, the bracket clip is terrible. It's impossible to tighten around the frame (the lock swings around under its own weight when riding), and a friend's bracket broke before he finished installing it on the bike. The bracket has no positive click to tell the user when the lock has been secured to it. It also binds up, so getting the lock out requires prying back and forth.
If you need good security and don't mind messing around with an awful mounting system, this is a good deal.
Customer Review: Solid Lock Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
It's a super sturdy lock that someone would have to be crazy to attempt to defeat. I don't give it five stars because The short length of the shaft sometimes makes it a pain to attach it to bike racks, but with enough creativity, I've never had to leave my bike unlocked. OnGuard does offer the Brute in a Long Shaft version (LS 5000), but for some reason the updated version doesn't include a theft guarantee for bicycles, only motor vehicles. The picture Amazon shows is for last year's model, so maybe you can still get a long shaft with the guarantee. If not, go for the standard length, it's a "don't mess with me" lock.
