Sports reviews of OnGuard Akita 5043 Bicycle Security Cable (Lock Not Included)Customer Review: High Security, but thick and heavy Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
The thickness of this cable is about as thick as a woman's pinkie finger. It's pretty thick as cables go. The ends are plenty big enough to slip over a U-lock. This is a good cable for going though a front tire, but it's so thick and heavy that it is be somewhat difficult to slip through anything else, and a bear to carry.
Cables of any kind are really just to keep someone without tools from walking away with a part of a U-lock secured bike. I keep one of my bikes parked at a train station overnight with other bikes: the thieves always take the ones locked only with a cable. You need a U lock to protect a bike parked for more than about 30 minutes or a bike worth more than about $300. I've seen Wal Mart bikes that had been stripped to the frame, worth no more than about $30, stolen when they were locked only with a cable like this one with a padlock.
Cables are only used to lock accessories. I have a bike worth about $150 used I leave overnight at a train station locked with a U lock, and this cable goes through the seat, rear storage rack and front wheel, with the U lock locked using Sheldon Brown's lock technique, and twice, thieves have come through and stolen anything secured only with a cable (the cut cables are strewn all over the lot), but they left my bike alone, because the cable was just protecting the accessories and the U lock was really protecting the bike.
A thinner cable is going to provide just about the same security, but they make the thinner cables just a little too short 6' compared to this cable's 7' length. I have both sizes, but this is the one I use on the bike for which weight is not a great concern. I keep it threaded through the seat and rear cargo rack and when I unlcok it, I leave it threaded through those things and just wrap it a couple of times around the seat post and then I thread one end through the other to keep it in place. Threading a cable of this thickness through the seat and cargo rack takes too long to keep installing and removing it. However, I appreciate the added one foot of length, so it's my cable of choice.
