Sports reviews of NBA Live 2006

Customer Review: Excellent!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

EA Sports continues to impress me year after year with their sports titles. NBA Live 06 is far superior to its predecessor. With all new features, including Superstar moves and performances from star players, and managing your own superstars life including endorsement deals and real-estate, this game blew me away. Graphics were also kicked up from last year, as well as the pace and feel of the game. Good job EA, keep up the good work.

Customer Review: NBA Live 2006 vs. NBA 2K6
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

So you're looking for an NBA game but don't know which one to get? I shall sort through the good and bad offered in both NBA Live 2006 and NBA 2K6.

Between the two I have played (Live '06 and 2K6), I can honestly say NBA 2K6 was a better buy for me. At $20 I've had countless hours of some of the most joyous moments and some of the most frustrating. However, NBA 2K6 is more of an all-around basketball game. If you're good at offense and poor on defense chances are good that you won't win as many games as you might think. But if you're only good at defense and horrible at offense, you won't win much then either. You basically have to play an even game altogether (this is based on All-Star level).

For fans of offensive-minded games, look no further than NBA Live 2006. The basic controls are straight-forward and easy to get a hang of so there won't be any real problems for newcomers to the series (such as myself). The best aspect featured in Live '06 is undoubtedly the Freestyle Superstars. My favorite team is the 76ers and to see Allen Iverson pulling off the moves he does in real life on a game is nothing short of a rush. Another highlight is that when you're left wide open for a shot, chances are extremely good that you'll drain it. Whereas on 2K6, you still basically had to have a perfect release.

As for the overall look of each game, I'd say that NBA 2K6 steals that as well. When you're looking at Allen Iverson (or any other player for that matter) there's no question who you're looking at. He's got his tattoos, his cornrows, mustache, everything. NBA Live 2006, on the other hand, almost tends to look childish at times. Don't get me wrong, the graphics and dunks are awesome to look at, but as you're dribbling upcourt I can't help but think the player's arms are too long. Of course, that could just be me. 2K6 also seems to have more realistic courts (I could do without the shots of the fans though).

NBA 2K6 pros:
-Fantastic gameplay
-The more you play the more you learn, making it a game you can invest time in
-The graphics are great
-When you turn up the difficulty it ACTUALLY GETS HARDER

NBA 2K6 cons:
-Offseason on Legacy mode is kind of lame
-Too frustrating at times
-When the other team is on a run, it's nearly impossible to hit anything other than a lay-up
-Loading time is almost ridiculous

NBA Live 2006 pros:
-Easy for anyone to pick up and play
-Freestyle Superstars
-Commentary is a lot better than 2K6
-Dunks are fairly easy to execute and make for some excellent highlights

NBA Live 2006 cons:
-Camera angle is horrible
-Far too offensive-minded
-Almost too easy at times
-Fouls are called too liberally on you

So there you have it, a fairly unbiased view on each game. If Live '06 were to drop down to $20 I'd highly recommend it, because in reality, it really is fun to play. But at $30 I'm not sure if it's worth every penny. Plus, 2K6 has a great street ball mode in addition to the legacy mode, so did Live 06 ever really have a chance?

Customer Review: Definately An Improvement Over Last Year's Game, But...
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

NBA Live 06 still could have been much better. I've been buying NBA Live for a while, and was always pleased with the improvements over the previous version until NBA Live 2005. Basically the only noteworthy addition was the Dunk contest, and return of the 3 point contest, but as you should be able to tell, that wasn't enough of an upgrade for $50.

Pros:
+Freestyle Superstar Mode - Easily the biggest improvement on this years game, and what sets it apart from all of the NBA Live's before. This feature just makes the game much more like NBA basketball, where the stars gave the ability to completely take over a game, and their abilities are much more defined.

+Play Against Friends & Online Play - This game is extremely fun multiplayer, as most of the NBA Live series has been. The online mode is also one of the best parts of the game, if you have Xbox Live.

+Player Development (In Dynasty) - Haven't used this that much yet (because I don't really like the dynasty mode at all), but what I've seen from it has been impressive. Definately one of the better features.

+Improved Graphics & Gameplay - These aren't huge improvements, but they definately add something.

+Soundtrack/Sound In General - While it looks like 'NBA 2k6' has a better soundtrack (Redman, Little Brother, Aesop Rock, Hierohlyphics, The Roots, Blackalicious...Come on, it's not fair), EA surprised me with this one, coming with a good soundtrack. Nice tracks from Jurassic 5 (& a new one from Chali 2na's debut), Afu-Ra, Chamillionaire, Q-Tip & others. The commentary and in game sounds are also top notch.

Cons:
-Dynasty/Season Mode, And Playing Against The Computer In General - For some reason, this just isn't much fun in this game. First, to make it the least bit entertaining, you have to raise the difficulty level, and after that, it still isn't very good at all. If you're looking for this in a basketball game, I would definately reccomend 'NBA 2k6' over this.

-Rebounding - The rebounding just flat out sucks in this game. Period.

-Unrealisticness/Too Fast Paced - Now, while this is a part of the Live series, it can still be viewed as a problem for us who want a good, realistic game of basketball. That's why I'm probably going to end up getting NBA 2k6 when it becomes $20.

-Abuse Of Superstar Abilities - This isn't a huge problem, but it can get annoying when the defensive stopper on the other team is getting 20 steals a game.

All in all, I would highly reccomend this game to anyone who likes playing basketball games with friends (and does it often), and owners of Xbox Live that need a good basketball game. I would also reccomend it to basketball fans with some money to spend (Unfortunately this game is priced at $50), and longtime fans of the Live series that might have been dissapointed the past couple of years. For someone that wants a deep, realistic basketball game, though, I would say you should get NBA 2k6 over this.

Customer Review: Good solid hoops game, but not next gen.
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

With the Xbox 360 so close to luanch on november 22,it almost seems not quite fair to for the great xbox games that are still being released. As far the graphics even though they are great but not next gen.
I have always been a 2k sports fan myself, but this year i decided to give Live 06 a try.
Live has alot of gameplay modes with good amount of depth in each of them to keep you entertained. Starting off with the simple but fun exibition mode where you can battle it out on the court angainst any NBA squad you wish.
Next there is the season mode were you can pick any of the teams to take it all the way into the NBA Finals and up to the last game.
You can check all of the teams and players for the whole league stats in Stats Central.
Now on to the Playoffs were you can choose any team and simulate the regular season and to hopefully become the world champions.
Now on to one of the more exciting modes in the game,NBA All Star Weekend.
You will get to compete in the Rookie Challenge,The Three Point Shootout,The Slam dunk contest and last but not least the All Star game itself.
Lets not forget about the incredibly in-depth dynasty mode were you can controll any NBA squad for over 25 years!
This year EA Sports did a mighty fine job in the hoops department, now we will just have to wait to see what they will have in store for us come November, 22.
