Description of Mountain Boy Sledworks Silverton Kicksled

Kicksledding is pure joy, and turns nearly all sledders into mountain boys and girls. Gliding along on hard-packed snow or ice seems effortless (though its actually good exercise), and you get to take your sweetheart or young one along too. As if that weren't good enough, kicksledding is also excellent aerobic exercise and a fantastic way to get a workout in the course of routine daily activities! Snowpacked streets, back roads, and well-used snowmobile trails are perfect for kicksledding, particularly those with a gentle grade. A long, plowed driveway curling down a hillside. Mountain Boy kicksleds are an artistic interpretation of a traditional, time-tested Nordic design. The sled body, including the very comfortable slatted seat, is made of American white ash. Screws are stainless steel, and connecting bolts are high-grade anodized steel. The runners are highly flexible tempered steel, with polished and waxed edges. Rings are welded to the front of each runner, making it simple to attach a bridle and tugline for dogsledding. Multiple coats of UV-resistant finish mean the sled can be left outside for extended periods without damage. The handle on each sled is a specially chosen native willow branch, hand-carved for a perfect fit and polished to show its natural beauty. No two handles are alike, and each has its own unique look and feel. Because each kicksled is a one-of-a-kind work, each is signed and numbered on the bottom by the sledmaker. On the front, the Mountain Boy brand is burned into the ash of the backrest, drawing attention to the individual grain of each piece of wood. And on the back, an elasticized storage compartment provides space for a sweater or lunch box. The copper footrest is light, strong and sets off the wood tones of the sled. As it ages, the copper gains a fine patina that only develops more character overtime. Removable nuts at the front of each runner allow each sled to be easily collapsed and transported on top of a vehicle
Built to last for generations, this heirloom-style, hand-crafted interpretation of a traditional Norwegian kicksled combines the joy of sledding with aerobic exercise on snowpacked streets, back roads, and snowmobile trails as well as open fields and gentle slopes. Because each kicksled is a one-of-a-kind work, each is signed and numbered on the bottom by the sledmaker. Rings are welded to the front of each runner so a harness can be attached for dogsledding.

Sports reviews of Mountain Boy Sledworks Silverton Kicksled

Customer Review: Beautiful!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

The whole sled is beautiful and well-made, but I really love the hand-carved willow handle -- it has so much character, and it fits perfectly in my hands.

Customer Review: Great for icy roads with packed snow on them.
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

After the Seattle snow of 2008 I bought some more sleds to have fun in the snow and this is one of them. I've got a dog and he pulls on his leash when I walk him, so I figured he'd be a natural for some dog & sled fun. Well, if I run alongside him, he pulls, but keeps looking back to see what is chasing him! Its pretty funny actually, but if I ride the sled on the runners and use the harness like a leash I can get him to pull some and if I kick it's good exercise for the both of us. But he runs in front, then in back, then up the side and well you get the picture. I takes some coordination to keep him from pulling me over.

I'm using this on a paved street which has snow which frozen into packed snow and ice from people driving on it. The hills are medium to small so we don't get out of control. I gave my wife a ride on it, and that works pretty well but she'd rather do something than just sit. If the kids were younger I'm sure that they would have enjoyed it, but alas they are out of the house and gone.

I bought the Mountain Boy Sledworks Kicksled Mushing Package which comes with Mountain Boy Sledworks Kicksled Snow Floats for use in loose snow. So far I haven't used the snow floats. I suspect that they will need some zip ties to hold them in place up front. But the snow on the grass here is too thin for this type of sled. The toboggans rule that hill.

These kick sleds are very popular in Finland and Norway et.al. And little wonder why. So if you live in snow country and have roads which don't get salt spread all over them, this is your sled.

As a toy, pretty expensive for the amount of use I've gotten out of it. But if the climate changes, I'm ready! (I gave it 4 stars because of the price/fun) Quality, it looks well made and since it's mostly wood I should be able to repair it if anything breaks and the runners are long pieces of steel, they aren't going anywhere. I expect my grand kids will be playing with my sled.

Oh on packing, there was one loose bolt wandering around in the bottom of the box, but I retrieved it and was good to go. The hardware is nothing special so any hardware store will have replacement bolts that would work.

If you are trying to decide whether to get this kick sled or the larger one, I picked this one, first, cost, it's less, second, with arm rests, if you don't fit between the arms, ie large adult you will on this one. Second if the sled is about to tip over, or out of control, I don't want anything in the way to keep me from bailing out and letting the sled take it's lumps on its own. But maybe for strapping kids in the other one is better. But this was my reasoning.

Customer Review: Kick sled
Sport shop rating: 4 Stars

The sled is very pretty and looks well constructed. But I have not yet yet used the sled as we have NO SNOW!!

Customer Review: Great sled, but poor packaging leads to lost parts
Sport shop rating: 3 Stars

The sled itself is made with good workmanship and beauty. However, it was packed with bolts, washers and wing nuts loose in the cardboard shipping box. Naturally, these boxes get holes in them while in transit (mine had a large hole in the side), and small parts will fall out of the holes and out of the ends of the box as well unless all corners are taped. An easy fix would just be to include the hardware in a plastic bag stapled to the inside of the box.

Buyers should also be aware that without the snow floats, the sled is only usable on ice. The rails are about the same width as ice skate blades, so just imagine yourself trying to skate on snow with a dog pulling you. If you intend to use the sled on anything other than ice, buy the snow floats.
