Customer Review: Good value, though picture quality is just ok Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
Someone in my office had been anonymously leaving insulting caricatures of me on my desk, so I decided to purchase game camera to bust them. I went with this model because it was one of the cheapest available. Unfortunately, I never caught them, but that wasn't the fault of the camera, it's because the culprit wised up and ceased committing the crime once I put this camera in place (I'm guessing they saw it). I don't feel too bad, as I plan to use this for other uses around the house (such as to bust my dog if she gets on the couch while I'm at work, or to see what kind of creature is eating the grapefruit that fall out of the tree in my back yard).
The picture quality and overall fit and finish of this camera is just ok. It's not great, but it will suffice for telling you what's going on in a particular area, with good enough image quality to tell what is in the area (but the image quality is pretty grainy, it's just good enough to identify who/what is in the image. It does not do well if the object is moving quickly). The camera body is made of cheap plastic, and the snaps as well as the battery compartment lid feel a bit flimsy - be careful not to break them. The user interface is ok, it didn't take me too long to figure it out and I'm a retard when it comes to these things.
This does not include a USB cable, and note the USB connector is of the "B" type (what is commonly found on external harddrives, as opposed to the little USB cables that usually come with digital cameras). So keep that in mind if you were planning to use a USB cable from a digital camera or other device, it might not be the correct type.
Even though the image quality and product fit & finish are just "ok", I upgrade my rating from 3 stars (which would be an "ok" or "adequate" rating) to 4 stars because this was just about the cheapest (not the cheapest) game camera available on amazon. You get what you pay for, and at this price point I didn't expect much. If you need high quality images, I'd recommend paying more for a higher end game camera. But if you just want to get the cheapest camera to see what goes on in a certain area and don't care about picture quality, this should do the job.
Customer Review: Pretty good so far Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
I bought the Moultrie Game Spy D-40 to take the place of a 35 mm game camera I had. The 35 mm game camera took good pictures, but was expensive to operate due to having to develop the film.
So far I'm pretty happy with the D-40, it has a lot of options including a film mode I have not tried. I ran into one issue where I could not get the camera to turn on in auto mode, I took the SD card out and then it would turn on. It ended up I had to re-format the SD card and now it's back working. This is something to keep in mind if you have an issue.
It's a little to early to tell but it look like it may be draining the battery faster than it should. The instructions say you can get a couple of months out of them, but I measured the voltage on one of the batteries (while troubleshooting the SD issue above) and it was 1.3 volts. These were new batteries that have only been in there a week, so it seems like 2 months is unrealistic. There is a external power port I might try to hook up a larger rechargeable battery too.
