The device comes with a small sampling of recipes to get you started.
Sports reviews of Max Burton Stove Top SmokerCustomer Review: Reasonable substitue if you can't cook outside Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
I say this on a cooking show on TV and wanted it. It works well and the food taste good and comes out tender. The only problem is that you have to experiment a little with the amount of liquid to use and how to set the burners on the stove...you can't go by the directions.
Customer Review: It worked great! Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
I use it mostly for fish and it works great. The fish was light and flaky and had a really good smoke flavor. It only took about 15-20 minutes to cook. The only thing I didn't like is that your house will smell like the wood chips for the next day or so.
Customer Review: Wonderful Food, Messy Cleanup Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
I purchased this product for my boyfriend who loves to cook. We both enjoy the food--delicious. However, I do the cleaning and now regret having bought it in the first place.
Customer Review: A little shallow Sport shop rating: 3 Stars
Works fine but it is a little shallow for a pork loin roast. A salmon fillet barely fits. Pork tenderloins worked fine.
Customer Review: A nice little indoor smoker as long as you use it outdoors. Sport shop rating: 2 Stars
I bought my Max Burton unit about a month or so ago at Ramsey Sporting Goods. The first time I used it to cook chicken breasts, my kitchen smelled like the smokehouse on my grandma's farm and produced a haze in the kitchen. Despite opening windows, running the fans, it took a while to clear out. The smell lingered for the next 3 or 4 days.
Even though the sliding lid was shut all the way, I thought that perhaps there was not a very good seal. Therefore, the next time I used it, I sealed it with heavy-duty aluminum. The problem with the fumes returned, as there was the smallest of openings in the foil. I tried a modification of the idea last night, and the house stinks.
Keep in mind, the wood measured did not amount to more than 1 and 2 tablespoons and 1/4 cup of water at medium heat as specified in the instructions.
Based on my experiences, I do not recommend this for indoor applications. The unit construction I think is on the sturdier side and so earns 2 stars. The most important feature though-that of using it inside-bears no stars.
