Sports reviews of MSR Pocket Rocket StoveCustomer Review: Good 1st stove Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I bought this stove recently and took it on a 3 day trip to Kettle Moraine North in Wisconsin. I used it to prepare breakfast and dinner meals which involved boiling water for oatmeal, coffee, and various noodle dinners. I also sauteed some spam to add to the noodles.
The stove is easy to set up and light. Just screw the stove into your canister and light with a match. The flame is powerful and heated water quickly - in probably 2-3 minutes I had a rolling boil. It's nice that you can control the flame easily too - I used this feature to turn the flame down after heating water for tea and coffee. I like to keep the water hot in case I want more, as opposed to only heating as much as I want and then heating cold water all over again. I used the MSR Blacklite pots with this stove.
Sauteing the SPAM was easy too, I obviously lowered the flame for this.
There are two significant downsides to this stove:
1. It is easy to tip over the meal you're cooking. I did it once and so did a friend of mine. We didn't lose the food in either case, but you have to be extremely careful. I bought a Brunton can stand that will hopefully counteract the instability issue, but I haven't tried it yet.
2. The canisters of fuel are expensive. An 8oz. canister of MSR fuel is around 5 or 6 bucks. I almost used up one of these during my trip. By comparison, one gallon of the white gas used to fuel the liquid fuel stoves like the MSR Whisperlite costs about $8.50 at Farm and Fleet. That fuel will last an extremely long time. So, it's just something you need to consider when buying the stove. The liquid stoves, on the other hand, aren't quite as easy to deal with as the canister stoves. My friend has one and it's a bit tricky to light it without over priming it and starting a small white gas fire.
I knew that fuel would be more expensive for this stove before I bought it, but it's still a downside. I recently bought a canister of Brunton isobutane and it works just fine with this stove. I bought a 16oz which was about 10 bucks.
The stove is surprisingly small. It fits right inside of my MSR Blacklite pot set.
Overall, I'm happy with the purchase. I would definitely buy it again.
Description of MSR Pocket Rocket StoveWhen it comes to canister-mounted stoves, MSR proves less is more. The PocketRocket is a favorite of BACKPACKER Magazine Tester Andy Dappen, who said, "This midget flamethrower is one of the lightest backpacking stoves available, and the best cartridge stove I've used." Pack light, but carry a powerful stove with the palm-sized MSR 11792 Pocket Rocket, which weighs just 3 ounces and measures 4 by 4 by 2 inches. It offers fast and simple lighting, with no need for priming, pressurizing or maintenance, and it will boil a liter of water in under 3.5 minutes. The glove-friendly controls allow precise flame adjustment and stability, while the micro-burner, tri-sectional Windclip Windshield clip protects flame in light wind gusts. It uses clean burning MSR IsoPro premium fuel. Stove Tips: - MSR recommends 4 oz. (114ml) of liquid fuel per person per day for cooking or 8 oz. (237ml) of liquid fuel per person per day for melting snow and cooking.
- At high altitude, MSR stoves may burn "rich," which hinders vaporization. Reducing fuel bottle pressure and opening up the windscreen can offset this.
- MSR's stoves burn best when the fuel bottle is pressurized to 15-25 psi (1034-1724 mb). That's equivalent to about 20 pump strokes for a full 22-ounce MSR fuel bottle. As the fuel burns, the air space in bottle grows larger, and pressure decreases. You'll have to pump more to maintain the same pressure.
