Sports reviews of Lansky Deluxe 5-Stone Sharpening SystemCustomer Review: Works with Thick Knives Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I have a Ka-Bar Becker BK2 Companion knife. I wasn't sure if this kit would work with it or not given the 1/4 inch spine on the knife. I took a chance and got the kit and it does work however the screws on the clamp need to be swapped out with the extra ones in the case. Every video and instructional guide I researched didn't mention this. The instruction book that comes with the kit makes no mention of these extra screws in the case either. The guides I came across always referred to the extra screws in the bottom right corner of the box as just replacement screws for the ones on the stones or the clamp. One of the "extra" screws has a standard flat head like the one in the clamp closest to where the knife blade would be. The other "extra" screw is the same type that is on the stones. What I noticed was that the "extra" flat headed screw was about twice as long as the one in the clamp. So you can swap out the screws to accommodate thicker knives. For my BK2 I was able to leave the first clamp screw (the one closest to the blade) unchanged and just unscrew it such that it was holding on by about 2-3 turns. But the back screw with the knob I swapped out with the "extra" screw that looks like the ones on the stones. This worked perfectly and the clamp holds the BK2 firmly in place. The "extra" flat head screw should allow you to sharpen really thick knives with spines greater than the BK2's 1/4 inch.
For the people worried about scratching their blade with the metal clamp, just put a small piece of paper or cloth between the clamp and blade. My BK2 has a black finish on it and I just put a piece of paper between the clamp and blade and I didn't have any scratches or scuffs on the blade when I was done sharpening it.
Customer Review: Fantastic Sharpening System Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This kit is extremely useful if you have a bunch of knives laying around that need their edges reprofiled (as I did). If the edge isnt too steep, the extra coarse hone does a great job of putting a much finer edge on a blade. However, if the edge is steep to begin with, you will be working it for a LONG time (a job better left to mechanical means). The nice thing about this system is it allows you to put one of four different angles on your blades (17, 20, 25, and 30 degree angles). It takes a little practice to get used to working the hones, but is picked up very easily, and is actually kind of enjoyable. This system will allow you to put that "shaving sharp" edge on those beat-down knives of yours (you know you have em, admit it). The only thing is if you have blades over 6" that need sharpening, you will need to sharpen a 6"ish section of the blade, unclamp it, and move it to the other end of the blade to finish the rest. Not a big issue, but if you have tons of Bowie/machete knives, you might want to look into a bigger system (which can be very pricy). All in All, a great, simple knife sharpening system to have, and for the money, I couldnt have asked for more.
Customer Review: very pleased, knifes were in desperate need of saving Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I had a mixed set of kitchen knifes in my drawers, all of them ruined by hand-held pull-through sharpener from... who knows where. I read the important articles [...] about sharpening, went to Apex's websites to watch the videos, so got the basic idea behind sharpening. Then I bought this set. Lansky Deluxe cost practically nothing but the result was amazing. I sharpened 3 large kitchen knifes with excellent outcome.
The clamping system is very effective. I was afraid it would give me problems as some folks here indicated. But, you have to match the taper of of your blade... that device can clamp down at other angles than just strict parallel. That's the reason for 2 screws. Once the angle is matched, the clamp is solidly attached to the knife. One of my large knife (8"), I sharpened in two stages - front some, then rear some.
There is no need for Apex type system for the home, unless you are really into tool collecting. Lansky produced a knife sharp enough to slice paper in air - like magic!
Customer Review: Great product Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I received this sharpening a few years ago for Christmas. I love knives and wanted to be able to control the edge I put on certain knives. With this system you can put a razor angle on better quality knives with a 17 degree or take steps down to 20, 25, or 30 for better durability over sharpness.
The only real complain I could make would be the extra course stone which does not seem abrasive enough. I recently have purchased the diamond version of the extra course stone and that solved the problem. Perhaps I just wanted to be able to put an edge on a dull knife faster than the stone allowed. That aside this is a perfect system.
The quality is fantastic, the system allows for greater control in angle of knife sharpening, and you can replace a completely eliminated edge in a few minutes with great ease.
I would rate this product as a 4.5 if Amazon allowed me too.
Customer Review: Easy to Use, Works very well Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
this set of whetstones with guides is AWESOME. I've used it on all my kitchen knives and my pocket knife to get them back to razor-sharp. It's use is practically braindead -- work from coarse to fine/hone and even the dullest knives can return to razor-sharp in just a few minutes.
Don't push _too_ hard when using the coarse stones and be liberal with the oil, or you might scratch your blades (not a problem as you can normally work even the worst scratches out with the more fine stones).
My only complaint is that for longer blades [over say, 6"] -- you have to do it in halves -- i.e. place guide on the lower half, grind/hone, move it up to the tip, and grind/hone again. the Range of motion for the small stones isn't that much, so for most longer kitchen chef's knives, you may have to work up and down the blade in 2 or 3 sections.
