I just got this and am impressed to say the least. It comes with medium rods, which are best to start out with. The fine rods are really for polishing (my opinion). I like this 4 rod set, and am glad I got it instead of the two rod set. The fine rods wouldn't be enough for dull, or harder steel knives.
So, this set will get your knives very, very sharp. I've also tried using a magic marker underneath this set; rock it side to side as your sharpen (see You Tube); this in order to decrease the angles even moreso. I keep my very small pocket knives scary sharp doing this. Otherwise, I use the 20 degree slots for all other knives and so far they all shave hair and it pops off your arm. Some knives with harder steel, or knives which need re-profiling may need extra work/time on the medium rods. Use common sense and care when using, and keep the rods cleaned after use with warm soapy water and an old tooth brush. This sharpener makes it easy on you, and you can sharpen like a pro. The base is a bit small, and I'd recommend using a clamp to bind the unit to your bench, or table for beginners, or using for longer periods. Most other sharpers don't compare for the price, compactness, performance and ease of use - this is it! Worth more if you ask me.
Buy this; once your learn to use it correctly, your knives will all be razors!
PS - my rods wabble a little bit as some have mentioned; this is not anything to fuss about (at all). As long as your angles are near 20 degrees, your knives will come out super sharp.
