Sports reviews of Kryptonite New York Standard Bicycle U-Lock with Bracket ( 4-Inch x 8-Inch)

Customer Review: Sturdy, Secure, Reliable
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I was a little taken aback from some of the reviews that gave this a less than favorable review. I've had this bike lock for a while and I feel very confident with it. I combine it with a 7 foot kryptonite kryptoflex cable to lock the wheels to the bike as well. I went with this bike like instead of the smaller New York Kryptonite U lock because the smaller one honestly doesn't fit on have the bike stands in the city

It comes with 3 keys, one lighted and two spares. It also comes with the key code so if you for some reason lose all 3 keys you can get another made. You can also register the key online at the kryptonite website and they will have it on file in case you lose all three keys AND the key code!. The New York Lock comes with a lock guarantee valid in New York City. It is a guarantee on the LOCK, not insurance. So if your bike is stolen because the lock is BROKEN, then they will compensate you for it. For what it is, I think its a great guarantee that Kryptonite threw on to their locks. A lot of people have gripes are about this guarantee but I personally think their provisions for the guarantee are reasonable and make sense. Plus they are the only ones out there guaranteeing their lock like this so it says something about the lock you are thinking about buying.

The keys are small but not too small. They definitely are well made and I feel confident using them. The lock mechanism is EXTREMELY smooth and does not take any kind of force to open it with a key. Its impossible to open this lock with a bic pen, I checked.

As for the lock, I honestly can not even explain how well built this thing is. Its a little heavy 4.4 lbs (still not out of control heavy like a chain lock), but if you live in the city and you're afraid your bike could get stolen...this is your answer. The bike lock is solid and I'm very happy with it.

The lock also comes with a bike lock holder that you can put on your bike. That little silver thing on side of the U lock is what clamps into the lock holder. It clips in secure and you don't have to worry about it. Since the silver clip on the u lock is twistable, you can arrange it anyway you want so it will fit on your bike. I have a rebuilt vintage road bike I use it on and I have no complaints about it.

Overall I'm really happy with this purchase. I'd recommend this to any person who wants a really secure U lock.

Customer Review: Big bad lock
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This lock is a beast no doubt, but that's what your paying for in this instance. This lock is close to impossible to pick on a street and would probably be faster to cut through the thing your bike is locked up to than saw through the new york. I'm already 230+ lbs so the little extra weight doesn't matter to me. Since I use this on my commuter, I just leave it attached to the frame.

I have never had a problem with the key and I have been using this most every day in sun and rain for the last 9 months. The key has always been smooth. The light on the key, after using it a good amount has started to flicker when the button is depressed. Since the light was a bonus I didn't take this to heart. I still enjoy the look of the key with the light on it over the other keys that it comes with. Makes The key look more like a car key and makes it very easy to figure out which key it is on your key ring in the dark or in your pocket.

The few problems I did have were fixed with a little WD40. The lock started to rust because of all the rain it was taking; winter months in Vancouver take a toll. A little WD40 a few months ago and the lock is still smooth as silk.

I've read some reviews of people complaining about the lock being difficult to get in and out of the lock holder on the bike frame. It was a little sticky at first, but it loosens up after a month or so. If you find you are having problems with it a little WD40 and it will loosen right up, a little machine oil might work as well.

Living in Vancouver and going to school very close to the slummy part of town, I take this lock with me everywhere I go. I team it up with a Kryptonite KryptoFlex for the front wheel and front of the frame. That way if anyone wants the whole bike they are going to have to have a very very strong leverage attack and some bolt cutters. No one, even someone jonesing for a fix is motivated to do all that.

This lock is what you pay for. If your only locking your rear wheel and back of frame id suggest looking at the mini. I'd also send you in that direction if your afraid of the weight (3.9 lbs not 10lbs.) I like the longer one personally, there have been many instances where i would not have been able to lock my bike up if i had the mini because of space around the bike racks.

All in all, this is one of the better locks you can get for your bike.

Customer Review: You must Understand!!!! Amazing lock.
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

....The New York lock, first off is nothing less of completely worth its weight. There are a lot, if not every review, complaints about the keys, delicate locking system, weight, etc.......

YOU MUST UNDERSTAND!!! KEYS- This is not a run of the mill lock. It is top of the line for its class next to the "faggetaboutit."
About the Keys and internals. ....... Yes, they key combination is one out of a million, so that means a lot of small etching and very delicate imprints, of course you can not grind it as if it were a "master lock" that you had on your locker in high school. If this lock were anything like a "master lock," it would be the equivalent of being able to use a coat hanger to break into a mercedes benz, not going to happen.

YOU MUST UNDERSTAND!!! LOCKING SYSTEM-When you put the key in the hole, you must use FINESSE, and do not grind it, if it doesn't turn, DONT GET MAD!! Slowly return to the start position and gently turn the key again, adjust depth of the key, and you will see that it takes almost no pressure at all to turn the key, just be gentle, it is a very fine mechanism but yet extremely durable.

IT IS USUALLY THE INDIAN, NOT THE ARROW.
Again, to all the complainers, if it doesn't turn, adjust the key, adjust the pressure, and treat it like a girlfriend or something you love, gently. It has a sweet spot..find it.
I ALMOST FORGOT!! It also has a $4500 Insurance if your bike is stolen, granted there are some conditions.

Once thieves see the bumblebee yellow, they don't even look twice, cause they already know there is no point trying to mess with this lock.

YOU MUST UNDERSTAND!!! WEIGHT- People complain about the weight. Again, Anything new, will seem a bit different. I your upgrading from a cheaper lock, it will feel pretty heavy, but you will get used to it, as with anything. It is made with thicker and higher quality metals, it has to weigh more, or they would just be trowing yellow stickers on 20 dollar evolution locks. It is completely weight the tiny bit of weight.

OK, So i guess that is all I have to say. Other wise it is just a great "investment" and you could even write it off on your taxes, if you use your bike for business. Crazy! Enjoy

Customer Review: Kryptonite New York Std. w/ solid mounting bracket
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Although no lock can protect your bicycle from a determined thief with enough time, the New York Std. will make it more likely that he will pass up your bike for an easier target. Its all about how and where you lock your bike. The New York Std. is a big/heavy lock, but I already knew that from reading the description. After mounting it in my triangle there was still enough room for my cage and water bottle. Having said that, I can tell you that this is one of the best bike locks on the market. Its superior quality is apparent from the moment you take it out of the package, and the mounting bracket, although made mostly of plastic, is sturdy and robust. The keys slide all the way in and release the shackle from the crossbar with no problems. Make sure your key is all the way in before you turn, but don't force it! If your have to force it something is wrong, and you should call, email, or write [...] Your Kryptonite has a lifetime warranty, and if there are any defects they will fix or replace it free of charge! And if your bike is ever stolen because the lock failed, they will reimburse you for the base price of your bike*([...]). Of course you have to make sure that you sign-up for the *Anti-Theft offer and provide proof that the lock was defeated, but that is understandable. The Key Safe program, when you register, provides you with the first 2 replacement keys free of charge. The free keys are standard not the lighted. Before you purchase this lock I suggest that you visit Kryptonite's website. You will learn about other great features that I didn't mention here. I am very satisfied with this lock, but it's only a lock. Use it in conjunction with other security devices available, be careful about where and how long you leave your bike, and maybe you won't become another victim!! Pictures of my Mongoose Sabrosa 3x8, with the Krytonite New York Std. mounted on the frame, can be seen above by clicking "customer pictures".

Customer Review: Great lock
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This is a fantastic lock. Other U-Locks, including Kryptonite's own Evolution series, can be easily defeated with hand tools (according to more than one bike magazine test). The New York lock can only be broken with 10 minutes of heavy effort with a power saw. Getting any other lock is not going to stop any thief with even basic tools.

I've never had a problem with the keys breaking. I did have one of my older keys (> 5 years of heavy use) have the plastic come loose from the metal part of the key, but it was still possible to to turn the lock using pliers. It's never a good idea to force the key, which I suspect the other reviewer did; just jiggle it until the key turns easily. Once in a while you can spray lubricant in there if the key gets stuck.

Don't be fooled by the other reviews ---- this is the lock to get if you want real security.
