A lock that ranks 1 on the Kryptonite scale might work if you live in the burbs and have a Rottweiler parked next to your bike or motorcycle. However, city dwellers demand extreme protection, which is why the New York Fahgettaboutit is built for serious deterrent security. The U-lock also offers such security-enhancing features as a high-security disc-style cylinder; an oversized, hardened steel sleeve over the crossbar for double security; double deadbolt locking for extensive holding power; and a center keyway that defends against leverage attacks. The Legendary Durability of Kryptonite Locks
The first big test for Kryptonite locks came in 1972, when Kryptonite founder Michael Zane directed the Second Avenue Bicycle Shop in New York City to lock a three-speed bicycle to a signpost in Greenwich Village. Although thieves immediately stripped all of the bicycle's removable parts, the bicycle itself remained for 30 days and 30 nights. The Kryptonite lock and the bike frame were still in place, even though the lock had been attacked numerous times. The publicity gave Kryptonite the boost it needed and forever changed the face of bicycle security. Twenty-two years later, Kryptonite returned to the streets of the Big Apple to test its latest innovation, the New York lock. In April 1994, the New York Post laid down the ultimate challenge: Could Kryptonite's New York lock last 48 hours on the toughest streets of New York? In a city where more than 100,000 bikes are stolen each year, Kryptonite and the Post locked a brand new, bright green Univega road bike worth $600 to a parking meter in the East Village--the Bermuda Triangle of New York bicycle thievery. For a full 48 hours, the bike remained locked on the corner of Avenue A and 11th Street. Zane and Neil McDaid, director of product development and design for Kryptonite, watched from around the corner as the bike came under every possible means of assault, stumping thieves at every turn. After 48 hours the bike remained intact except for the gear derailleur, which had been stripped off. The lock showed definite signs of abuse, but it had not failed. The New York lock had met the Post's challenge.
Not satisfied with the length of the test, Zane moved the bike to SoHo for another six days and, finally, uptown near the Lincoln Center. Even in these high-theft areas the properly locked bike lasted another three weeks before being pulled off the streets by Zane and McDaid. The Post also ran the New York lock through a battery of street tests using common bike theft tools: a 4-foot bolt cutter, a crowbar, and a hammer. The non-Kryptonite locks cracked in seconds, but all methods failed on the New York lock, even the monstrous bolt cutter, which was rendered useless with large dents in its jaws.

If you plan on transporting this thing around don't plan on putting it in your bag and riding off. This thing weights a TON. If your going to have to lug this heap of bricks around make sure you can latch it to your bike somehow. I tried putting it in my TimBuk2 bag and by the end of a 5 mile bike ride I felt like my body was going to break in half from my shoulder strap down. On the other hand, if your trying to keep your bike safe, this is the lock for you! =D

This lock may be a little heavy but it's your choice, lock it or loose it. Also it is good peace of mind as well. I use this in combination with (8351D
Master Lock Smart Bracket for Bike Locks to mount the lock to my bike) and Kryptonite 2018 Hardwire Key Cable to loupe through both wheels, the frame and the lock. The 2018 Hardwire I carry looped three times (fasten together with its velcro) and put it in my backpack. Securing your bike is a must, it only takes one time and you will learn. This is the best combination on the market! I research everything I buy, I only buy once.

The lock is heavy, yes, but totally worth it. It is a lot brawnier than other locks around my college campus, which are mostly chain locks or less sturdy looking u-locks. I use it on combination with a factory rear-wheel lock on my Dutch bike and feel completely confident leaving my bike just about anywhere. Sometimes the smaller size requires some creativity in terms of where you park your bike, but I've found this lock fits pretty snug around parking meter posts. I think this lock is totally worth the weight and the cost if you've got a nice bike that you don't want stolen.Customer Review: Fully satisfied

I had my bike stolen last december and i didnt dare purchase a new one until i bought this lock. My expectations have been exceeded... It works more smoothly than any lock i have had, even in snow and waay below zero temperatures. The weight is not too much of an issue either because you can simply clip it to your handlebars when you are riding. And i was also concerned ttat it would be too short to be useful but it has not proved more challenging than my other slightly longer locks to find objects to attach it to. NOTE:LOCK IS SMALL AND EVEN FOR MY SKINNY TRACK BIKE, THE LOCK DOESN'T ALWAYS LOCK WITH THE FRAME AND REAR WHEEL SO INVEST IN A CABLE OR CHAIN THAT SUITS YOU.
