Both the loop and flat caps have stainless steel bases to prevent plastic from coming in contact with your beverage.The perfect companion for your Klean Kanteen reusable drink container, the stainless Loop Cap fits the 12, 18, 27, and 40 ounce stainless steel bottles securely. The Loop Cap twists on and off and has a loop for easy attachment to your bag. Properly closed, the cap will not to spill, even if you throw the bottle in the bottom of your backpack. Durable, sanitary, and non-reactive stainless steel is the material of choice among the food processing, dairy and brewery industries. I purchased the Klean Kanteen bottles as an alternative to my deteriating lexan bottles. I am impressed with the bottles and the sports caps that they came with. I purchased the Stainless steel loop cap so that I can clip the bottle to my backpack when hiking and am very happy with it. The threads fit much better and far more secure than the poly loop cap threads and it also covers a bit of the outside of the rim to. In theory I like the idea of a metal cap that prevents contact between the water and the plastic, I've had a terrible experience with the stainless loop cap. I have the 40oz bottle and apparently the adhesive cannot handle the weight--the loop actually separated from the rest of the cap, sending my water bottle crashing onto concrete, damaging the bottle in the process. I ordered a second one, stopped carrying it by the loop all the time, but it still came separated. I'm using the poly loop now and haven't had this problem.Customer Review: great fit

The thing fits but it looks like it was not ment to be on the bottle. Def aftermarket and NOT klean kanteen OEM. I know they are hard to find but I would reccomend you get one from klean kanteen.Customer Review: Better than the poly loop cap

After reading some negative reviews about the steel cap, I ordered my bottle with the poly cap instead. I was quickly unsatisfied with the poly cap because it retains the smell of whatever soap you used to wash it. I then ordered the steel cap and I found that it was far superior.
Not only does the steel cap wash cleanly without any residue or leftover smell, but it actually covers the entire lip of the bottle opening. The poly cap does not and it leaves this part exposed. This is important because this is where your lips are actually touching when you drink from the bottle.
I only hand-wash my steel cap, so I haven't had any of the water-retention problems that I've read about in other reviews.
