Customer Review: Great for cruising the neighborhoods ! Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
I ordered the Kent Tandem and it took about 5 days to arrive. I expected this to be a "BICYCLE KIT" and it met my expectations 100%. I removed every component from the frame one by one and inspected/lubed/re-assembled back on the frame and adjusted. The ONLY thing that had even a trace of grease on it was one of the bolts for the stoker handlebar clamp(Seriously). Every bearing was dry. The rear wheel was missing 5 balls on the gear side.I mic'ed the balls on all the bearings and all were within .0001 in. or less difference. Both tires had maybe 10 pounds of air in them. I let what little air out and pulled the tires to inspect the wheels and spokes. The spoke strip on the rear wheel was pushed over and not covering the spokes in two spots so there was a sure flat if I would have just put air in it without checking. The front tire was OK. The front wheel was within .080 in. of true both horizontal and vertical. The rear wheel was out approx .600 in. horizontal and .080 in. vertical. It wouldn't even roll without the tire hitting the frame. I trued both wheels to +/- .020 in.("close enough" for a bicycle) along with setting a little backlash on the spokes in the process. As with everything else on the bike, The brakes and both derailers weren't even close to being adjusted correctly. The return springs on the rear brakes were in different holes. When adjusting the derailers I noticed the rear derailer was bent. I called the toll free # for Kent customer service and told the lady the problem. With no questions asked, she took my name and address and said she would get another derailer in the mail that day and I didn't need to send the bad one back. A close look at the frame and no cracks, bends or dents were found. The welds are not as pretty as they could be but they didn't look bad at all and showed signs of good penetration at the weld edges. While waiting for the new derailer I peeled off about 10 pounds of stickers and installed some aftermarket fenders,a rear cargo rack, two bells (The stoker has to have fun too),rear view mirrors and naturally some streamers on the handlebars. The replacement rear derailer arrived in three days. I'm VERY happy with their customer service. After assembling the tandem "KIT" and adjusting the seats and handlebars we took it out for a "Maiden Voyage" of 31 miles. The bike rode really well. The frame was MUCH STIFFER than our old Columbia tandem. Shifts were smooth, quick, precise and quiet. No "Auto shift" from frame flex on take off or climbs. The brakes worked nicely and took very little finger pressure to stop on the small hills we encountered. I think the supplied Velo seat will have to be replaced for me but my Wife seemed to like her seat OK so far. We managed to hit our fair share of bumps and pot holes along with going down some rough gravel roads so I was wondering how things were holding up. After we got home I looked everything over and all was as it should be. I didn't use the dial indicator again but "eyeballed" the wheels judging with the brake pads and spinning the wheels and they seemed to hold true. We really like the bike. It does just what it was designed for (cruising around the neighborhoods) and does it well. It's just what we hoped for and expected and we think it's well worth the $248.00 shipped. We had a BLAST riding "twogether" through the neighborhoods of three small towns Sunday. If someone is looking for a cruiser tandem and can assemble the "KIT" themselves then I would recommend the Kent. If you are not comfortable doing the work then I suggest talking with a local bike shop, Give them the list I posted here in this review of the things I HAD TO DO to assemble the bike for an example and get a estimate. It might cost more than it's worth if you have to go that route. Even with the missing ball bearings, I give it 4 stars for the style and price. Heck, you can't expect "top of the line" quality on a $248 tandem.
Customer Review: Surprised at the quality Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
After reading the reviews we decided to buy this from Amazon. We ordered the bike on Tuesday using super saver shipping, Amazon shipped it on Thursday and it actually arrived on Saturday. The bike is surprisingly built well for how much we paid for it. Compared to the other tandem bikes this bike give good comfort and quality for the money. If you need instructions to put it together, you may struggle because the instructions aren't good. There is really nothing to putting it together. I bought this because my daughter is 7 and she is too big for a child seat, I thought I might have to do some adapting with it until she got a little bigger but she can reach the pedals. The bike really looks as good in person as it does in the pictures. There are two drawbacks that I don't like, one bothersome the other is personal preference. The personal preference issue is that the seats do not have quick adjustments to raise and lower the heights of the seats quickly, I'm sure I can add these later, but everyone wants to ride the bike and I have to get out a wrench to adjust the seat height. The other quirky thing that I find with the bike and the more bothersome is with turning. I understand it is a tandem and they turn differently, I used to ride one when I was a kid, but when you turn the front is very compact, as you can see in the picture, and the tire can hit your foot. Maybe this is an issue with tandems but you have to coordinate your turns so that you either have just your toes on the pedal or just don't pedal at all for the person in the front. However, I do like how easy this bike is to ride, when I was a kid we use to ride an old tandem and it took so much effort to move that it just drained you, this bike is no where near that, this bike moves with ease. All in all i ranked it a 4 because of the foot issue otherwise it would be a 5. My biggest concern when buying it was that the tires in some of these bikes that you buy from the stores are packed so tightly that the wheels get mangles and wobble something awful, the tires on this bike were as straight as they come. Total time to put together 1/2 hour for handy people maybe 1-1.5 hours for someone who has to read directions and struggles with mechanical aptitude. I may order the wheel covers in the future if I really start not liking the wheel issue. I hope this review helps, as for me I am happy with the purchase and the price.
Customer Review: Better Than Expected Sport shop rating: 4 Stars
I was trying to decide between this tandem for $260 and the Pacific one also on Amazon for $230. After reading all the reviews, I decided to go with the Kent for the following reasons: (1) The Pacific tandem lacks a chain tensioner, (2) Multiple reviewers stated that the rear handlebars on the Pacific are inadequate and need to be replaced right away, and (3) the Pacific had a non-standard bottom bracket mount that seemed to hold the cranks in place with two small screws, and there were several reviewers who complained that the cranks fell out while they were riding!
On the Kent, the major complaints seemed to be that the bike ships with virtually no lubrication other than on the rear handlebar clamp (true in my case), and that the bike generally arrives with the rear wheel bent or out of true (true in my case).
The bike arrived largely assembled, all you have to do is slide in the two seatposts, screw on the 4 pedals, mount the rear handlebars, and put the front handlebar neck into the stem.
The other thing is that all the cables on the bike ship loose except for the front derailer which seemed to arrive tuned(!). The brakes and rear derailer need to be set up from scratch, including setting the high and low stop on the rear derailer. I ended up spending $35 at a bike shop to set up the derailer, true the back wheel, and tune the brakes, so I'm $295 into the bike at this point and even at that I consider it a very good deal.
The bike is a steel tandem, it's heavy. The riding position is like a comfort bike, and the frame is definitely on the short side for a tandem. I'm 6 feet tall and the rear seat is a tight fit for me unless I tilt the rear bars quite a way forward to give me knee clearance.
Overall, the bike looks great, it's fun to ride, and is perfectly adequate. It's a nice novelty for riding around town, but it's certainly not something I would consider for a fitness program or any kind of distance riding. It's basically a department store bike built for two, and from my perspective it fulfills it's role admirably. It is fun!
