Sports reviews of Kent Dual Drive Tandem Comfort BikeCustomer Review: For a solid bike and a solid budget, this is a winner... Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
After looking at multiple tandem bikes online, I ordered this Kent Dual Drive from Amazon. I originally was looking for a more retro looking/classic tandem styling. However, the quality of these style of bike is "cheap and sloppy" in my budget price-range (or Uber expensive with the +$1000 tandem bikes). Thus, although the Kent Dual Drive has a strange tube shape, this bike highly exceeds the quality of any other budget tandem bike on the market.
With Amazon shipping, it came in literally 2 days (free shipping too!). Large box, 67 pounds. The assembly was not too hard - if this is your first time putting together a bike, it will take just a little time... For more experience builders, this is an easy snap to put together: attach the handlebars, seat posts, reflectors, wheels, and snap on the brake cables. Presto Change-O, you have a built tandem bike!
I needed to oil and grease the bike since all of the wheel/gear bearings were dry as a bone. After adjusting the gears a bit and getting the brake tension just right, the tandem bike was ready for the virgin ride.
The bike handles VERY smoothly, takes bumps with a smile, and stops very quickly. One problem is that the over sized tires can make turns a bit tricky to get used to doing. But overall, I am more than pleased with this purchase and would do it again in a heartbeat.
Customer Review: Good bargain tandem bike Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
It is a good bike. I assembled it on the evening we received it. Not too hard with the Topeak bike tool also sold on Amazon. The only place I spent more time to adjust is the front handle orientation. If you adjust the handle orientation first, you probably don't have to adjust the brake handle and speed rotator. I did not realize the handle was put in a different orientation to fit the shipping box.
Riding this bike is not hard at all compared to a regular mountain bike. You don't have to paddle it hard for it to move fast enough. The extra person on the back does not seem affect much the handling.
One thing I like to see the bike manufacture do is to have good safety lights. The only rear reflect light in the package was designed to go unde the rear seat. If you have the rear seat at lowest position, then the light will not be able to be mounted anywhere.
People spending $50 to get good quality bike light installed on bikes, why can't the manufacture include some good quality bike light, made using metal instead of cheap plastic, on the bike, that would increase the value of the bike and make bike riding safer.
Customer Review: Great Value! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I've ridden a long time and bought my share of high quality bikes, so I was really hesitant to buy what I perceived as a discount department or toy store quality bike. But for our first and perhaps only tandem, I was quite impressed -- this bike turned out to be a better deal than I anticipated. It arrived with only minor cosmetic damage (scratches on handlebars), was easy to assemble, stylish with a VG paint scheme and finish, and VG components for the money. Plus the wheels came already trued -- which surprised me also. The wheels and seat posts do not offer quick-release design, however. I personally have to remove the front wheel, front seat/rear handlebar assembly and pedals for roof rack transport, so I plan to buy upgraded wheels and quick-release clamps for the seats. As others have noted, if you lack the time and/or mechanical knowledge, it's always a good idea to take the bike to your local bike shop to make sure all bearings are greased, wheels trued, and brakes and derailleurs adjusted before your first ride. Overall, I recommend this tandem as a great buy!
Customer Review: Just the two of us Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This bike is perfect for our needs. We live in an area of many paved riding trails. When we each had our individual bike (which we still have), we rode because we wanted the exercise. I was always way ahead of my wife and then I'd have to stop and wait for her to catch up. Now we ride together and are able to talk to each other. I've read other's criticism of the workmanship and quality. Given the price, I got what I expected. It meets our needs. If I were going to ride it differently or more, then I might want a more expensive and better quality bike, but this one hasn't let us down yet. Warning though: When I assembled the pedals and seats, the tires needed inflating. One of the stems was crooked and I inflated it anyway. It caused a flat and I had to buy a new tube. So if the stems are crooked, inflate the tire, then deflate it and straighten the tube inside the tire, so the stem is straight. That will get out any wrinkles or kinks that will cause it to go flat if you ride it fully inflated that way. Great bike!!! The envy of the whole neighborhood.
Customer Review: Great value if you're a mechanic Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This bike is a great value for the money. The frame construction is good, functional, perhaps without much clean-up for aesthetics.
The components are decent quality as well and works very nicely. However, you MUST be a good mechanic to get it all working together. As mentioned in some other review, you pretty much have to completely disassemble the bike, grease, re-install and adjust everything. Count on 2-4 hours for this process if you have all the tools (freewheel remover, cone-wrenches, bottom-bracket wrenches, etc.). A derailleur-hanger alignment tool would come in handy too as the one my bike was slightly bent.
The wheels are heavy-duty with large tyres. This helps make it a comfortable ride for those with less experience on road-racing bikes. It's a beach-cruiser ride with the big tyres at 60-70psi.
Overall, a great bike. I would recommend adding a rear-rack and basket/panniers for taking a picnic to the beach.
