Sports reviews of Kazam Balance Bike

Customer Review: Great stepping stone on the way to riding a bicycle
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

We got one of these Kazam balance bikes for my 4 year old son for Christmas (he had just turned 4 within a week of getting the Kazam). He's average size for his age. Up until then he had been riding a tricycle, so he knew what the concept of pedaling was all about; I wanted him to use the Kazam to learn how to balance.

Due to the weather, we weren't able to get outside to use it until late February. We spent at most maybe 8 days, an hour or two each day, with him learning to balance on the Kazam while riding down a gentle slope on an empty street.

The first couple of days, he kept his legs out to the side as he got used to balancing. By the third day, he was putting his feet on the footrest in the middle of the Kazam as he rode down the street. I would ride next to him on my roller blades.

After a few days of that, I decided to let him try a regular pedal bicycle -- no training wheels -- just to see how it went. He had never been on a 2-wheel pedal bicycle before. It was still cold out, so my "teaching" him how to ride basically consisted of me grabbing the back of his coat and jogging behind him as he pedaled in our driveway. We did that a few times and then I just let go midway down the driveway ... and he kept going for 10 feet before he stopped. Next time it was 15 feet ... then 20 feet ...

A couple of hours later, he was riding a regular bicycle on his own! Without ever using training wheels. It took him a few hours to get the hang of the coaster brakes, and he needs a little push to get started if he's starting out going uphill, but basically, my 4 year old learned to ride a bicycle in ONE afternoon, thanks to his learning to balance on the Kazam. Very few falls and no cuts or crying or anything.

So on the "downside" my son rode the Kazam for maybe 20 hours tops before he got good enough to ride a bicycle. But I am pretty sure that without the Kazam he would have taken MUCH longer to learn to ride a bike. He's still all excited about riding a pedal bicycle, so it's too early to tell if the Kazam will hold any interest for him now that he can ride a regular bicycle, but even if it doesn't, we'll use the Kazam for his little sister in a few years.

In my opinion, the Kazam works best if you can find a safe place to practice that has a GENTLE slope, so the kid can practice balancing with his/her feet on the footrest in the middle, pick up a little speed, and ideally if you can find such a spot with a couple of curves as well they will be able to get the hang of turning while balancing. Once they have confidence in their ability to balance on two wheels, assuming they already know how to pedal from riding a tricycle, it seems they can put the two skills together pretty quickly.

The Kazam bike itself is well built and looks like it stand up to many years of use. Assembly was very easy.

Do you have a three to six year old who is not riding a bike yet? With the KaZAM Balance Bike, your little one will never have to use training wheels. Try it and you'll understand why both toy experts and parents agree that KaZAM is the best balance bike and easiest way to teach kids to ride a bike.

Parents spend countless hours teaching their children how to ride a bike. When buying a training bike, most parents choose pedaled bicycles with training wheels. Training wheels may seem like the easiest way to learn to bike, but training wheels do not teach kids balance or proper bicycle steering. A bike with training wheels may even be dangerous since it can topple over if a child rides over uneven ground or turns a corner too quickly. Many parents struggle with weaning their children off of training wheels, and some kids use training wheels for two or even three years before finally learning how to ride a bike.

If you want to teach your kids to ride a pedaled bicycle quickly and safely, try the balance-first, pedal-next approach to learning to ride a bike. KaZAM bikes are the ideal training bikes because KaZAM teaches children how to balance and steer a bicycle. KaZAM is the only balance bike on the market uniquely designed with a foot rest. Children lift their feet up naturally and position them on to the foot rest maintaining proper balance and center of gravity similar to riding a traditional bicycle. KaZAM teaches kids coordination and balance and prepares them to ride a pedaled "big kid" bike.

Experts agree that KaZAM is the best training bike. You may have seen KaZAM on the NBC Today Show in May 2010. Toy expert Stephanie Oppenheim shared the best toys to get your kids moving and rated the KaZAM Balance Bike as the best in its category.
