Description of Katadyn Pocket Water MicrofilterThe most rugged, longest lasting microfilter available. Chosen by the U.S. military and expeditions due to it's extreme durability and dependability. For those who want the best. Water treatment products are in high demand for outdoor enthusiasts, international travelers, and relief agencies. Few are better for long-lasting continuous use, however, than the Katadyn Pocket water microfilter. Made of heavy-duty materials, the Pocket features a silver-impregnated ceramic element that's effective against bacteria and protozoa even in extreme conditions. Unlike disposable filters, the ceramic element can be cleaned several times, even in the field. More importantly, the element filters all microorganisms larger than 0.2 microns (0.0002mm), producing clear, drinkable water no matter where in the world you are. The pump also includes an improved, round pump handle for better ergonomics and an outlet hose that attaches to water containers with a single clip. The Pocket hails from Katadyn's Endurance series, a high-quality line of filters that produce up to 100 times more water than standard water filters. The Pocket is so tough, in fact, that it's the first choice for extreme adventurers like Mike Horn. Plus, it's the only water filter with a 20-year warranty. Other features include a measuring gauge that indicates when you should change the filtering element, a cushioned base that makes it easy to pump on all surfaces, a prefilter, and a carrying bag. Why Water Filtration Is Important The World Health Organization (WHO) attributes 80 percent of all travel diseases to contaminated drinking water. Drinking water contains three groups of pathogenic microorganisms: viruses, such as hepatitis A, Norwalk virus, or poliovirus; bacteria, like e-coli, salmonella, and cholera; and protozoans, such as giardia and cryptosporidium. Tap water and ice cubes are usually the culprits when traveling, but even bottled water can be questionable. The backcountry is also a source of waterborne illness. A pristine stream may be safe one day and contaminated the next, as microorganisms stemming from human and animal waste are typically spread by rain and runoff. As a result, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends treating water from every source in the backcountry. Specifications: - Usage: 1 to 4 people

Sports reviews of Katadyn Pocket Water MicrofilterCustomer Review: SIMPLY THE BEST FILTER FOR YOU MONEY Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Extremely durable! Specially the plastic black tube, it is much more flexible than most materials. It has withstand countless drops, crush and miss treatments and to this day it is barely scratched.
4 years ago (in 2007) this filter was selling for about $190, then in august 2010, when I got mine, it was selling for $220 and today it goes for about $320. I'm not sure why this huge price increase but I would still buy it all over again. This is simply THE LAST filter you will ever buy. It will last FOR EVER.
I suggest adding an in line carbon filter for chemicals and if you're way too picky a steripen for viruses (but I think that may be an overkill).
Customer Review: Compact on the go, SHTF clean water filter Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Had the oppurtunity to use it a couple times already.(Be sure to pre-filter water through T-shirt or something of that nature for really ucky looking water) The water I used was from a pond down the street from my friends. We still boiled it to be safe, and it still had a very slight odor, but tasted like plain water. Gonna get a charcoal type filter to take care of the slight odor. The odor wasn't evident until we boiled the water, which could have something to do with it. I know it's supposed to take care of everything for microbes and such, I wasn't taking a chance, and don't recomend anybody does unless there truly is no other option, and a heat source is not available.
Customer Review: Awesome! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Hands down the best portable water filter that I've used. It doesn't remove any smells or chemicals from the water unless you buy the optional carbon post filter. If I had to do again, I'd buy in a heart beat. Despite one review, this is truly a quality built item. It's basically a milled aluminum filter, with a fine clay composite mix for a filter. You simply wipe the filter with a scotch bright pad lightly to remove contaminants. It would have been nice if it automatically came with the polishing carbon filter, but it's not a big deal. Works well and should last a very, very long time.
Customer Review: TOUGH & DURABLE & EFFECTIVE Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
This is an awesomely manufactured tool for outdoors or survival or self-reliance. We own and use in raw mountain streams in the Rocky Mountains....WORKS GREAT!! Katadyn claims the original ceramic filter is good for 13,000 gallons...and I believe it. This is outdoor, emergency prep, disaster survival and/or self-reliance gear you'll use for decades, and then pass down to your kids. Recommend unconditionally!

Customer Review: The BEST Water filter ever made. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
You cannot get a better water filter than this one. The construction is absolutely solid and is designed to last a long long time. As I understand, it was originally developed for hard core military use. The water is also excellent tasting as well. A charcoal in line should be used to get better taste, just in case you're using a funky smelling water source. Read the directions on how to treat the filter after use, it'll prevent any crap from building up on the element.
