I used an earlier version of this filter while living among the people in Korea for a full year for all my daily water needs. It never let me down. Never got sick. Never had a malfunction. No breakage. Nothing but a tired arm from pumping a gallon or so daily for my wife, year-old daughter, and myself. Later, it serviced my visiting in-laws, also at a rate of about three gallons a day (my MIL is a great cook). The silver impregnated filter never approached the point where the thickness gauge would have suggested replacement.
I still have this filter and have used it since 1985 for outdoor trips and for civic emergencies, like when a hurricane knocked out city power for days. Water stopped flowing from taps. My K filter serviced lake water for several households for three days. Of course, given the threat of viruses, we used a treatment for that, but the greenish water from the local retention pond came out of the filter clear and odorless. No one got ill at all and we had all ages in the group.

I recieved the Katadyne Pocket Water Filter in reasonably prompt time and I was impressed with the apparent workmanship quality of same. I also bought a carbon accessory filter to use in conjunction with the pocket water filter. I have now used the above products for a little less than a month, drawing only from chlorinated tap water at home in Florida and from tap water here in the Ukraine so to date, I've not really set it to the ultimate test of providing potable water from an outside source such as a stream, river, or lake.
My intention in buying the above products is to access clean drinking water while traveling abroad and especially while at home during times of civil disorder, tyranny, and other like emergency situations possible in the not-too-distant future. My feeling at this point is that this was a smart choice and it will come in handy during any future wilderness backpack trips also.

I've tried (and broken) numerous different water filters. I consider myself very gentle with my equipment but lately I've broken my fair share of "plastic" filters. I won't "name names" but these were name brand filters... I finally abandoned my quest for the uber-light and got a Pocket Filter. I could not be happier with my decision. The Pocket worked great, every time. My husband and I just finished a month-long trek in the high Sierra's and never worried once about whether our water filter was going to work or not. While on the trail, we spoke with numerous other hikers who broke their "plastic" filters too and were resorting to purification pills as a back-up. We told them to get a Pocket. The Pocket was easy to use, easier to maintain and solid as a rock. Do not let the weight of this filter dissuade you - you will be glad to have this filter when it really counts.Customer Review: When it comes to purified water, reliability is critical

The price is daunting, but its to hard overvalue reliable water purification. We backpack the desert southwest, so the penalty for failure is too great when it comes to water. This filter system is stout, robust and will take a beating and work the next day. I prefer the ceramic filter approach and have never had any problems. Avoid the cheap parts and suboptimal workmanship of other systems. I learned my lesson. I had the plastic version by another company, and after about 100 liters of pumping the O-ring blew. Lucky it was purifying the last liter before starting the day-long hump out. Back in civilization I find out they want $20 for a 5 cent part. I think not. Fool me once...
After that I realized that quality, in this case, is the driving force. That's when I bought the Katadyn. Great investment.

I just tried tha Lifesaver 6000L water Bottle thinking it would be a step up from the Katadyn pocket, boy was I wrong, guess I was sold on their video infomercial, and despite their 15nm claim,, the Lifesaver bottle is a piece of crap.. flimsily built, water tastes like plastic chemical- even after priming, It Leaks a lot, not hold much water, just too many other things to go wrong with it.. Needless to say I'm sticking with my Katadyn Pocket which has NEVER EVER FAILED me yet during extreme use, and always provided me great tasting water from some pretty nasty looking water sources.. Katadyn pocket IS THE BEST rock solid reliable filter there is... And Yes It has Saved my ass in tha real world already...
