Description of Katadyn Pocket Water Microfilter

The most rugged, longest lasting microfilter available. Chosen by the U.S. military and expeditions due to it's extreme durability and dependability. For those who want the best.
Water treatment products are in high demand for outdoor enthusiasts, international travelers, and relief agencies. Few are better for long-lasting continuous use, however, than the Katadyn Pocket water microfilter. Made of heavy-duty materials, the Pocket features a silver-impregnated ceramic element that's effective against bacteria and protozoa even in extreme conditions. Unlike disposable filters, the ceramic element can be cleaned several times, even in the field. More importantly, the element filters all microorganisms larger than 0.2 microns (0.0002mm), producing clear, drinkable water no matter where in the world you are. The pump also includes an improved, round pump handle for better ergonomics and an outlet hose that attaches to water containers with a single clip.

The Pocket hails from Katadyn's Endurance series, a high-quality line of filters that produce up to 100 times more water than standard water filters. The Pocket is so tough, in fact, that it's the first choice for extreme adventurers like Mike Horn. Plus, it's the only water filter with a 20-year warranty. Other features include a measuring gauge that indicates when you should change the filtering element, a cushioned base that makes it easy to pump on all surfaces, a prefilter, and a carrying bag.

Why Water Filtration Is Important
The World Health Organization (WHO) attributes 80 percent of all travel diseases to contaminated drinking water. Drinking water contains three groups of pathogenic microorganisms: viruses, such as hepatitis A, Norwalk virus, or poliovirus; bacteria, like e-coli, salmonella, and cholera; and protozoans, such as giardia and cryptosporidium. Tap water and ice cubes are usually the culprits when traveling, but even bottled water can be questionable. The backcountry is also a source of waterborne illness. A pristine stream may be safe one day and contaminated the next, as microorganisms stemming from human and animal waste are typically spread by rain and runoff. As a result, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends treating water from every source in the backcountry.

Customer Review: Katadyn Pocket Water Microfilter
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

Great Product - I would recommend it after doing lots of research. It's one of the better products out there and has a lifetime warranty from Katadyn against defects in materials and workmanship.
From the Pamphlet:
"Your Katadyn Pocket Microfilter comes with a lifetime warranty from the date of purchase against defects in materials and workmanship. Should your Katadyn Pocket prove defective within that period from the date of purchase, return it to the Katadyn retailer from who it was purchased...Please retain your purchase receipt as proof of date purchase..." so be sure to keep your receipt somewhere safe (just in case)

It comes with two hoses (one input hose and one output in it's own bag to prevent cross-contamination), two green scrubbing pads, a measuring device to let you measure when you need to replace the ceramic filter, lubricant and two replacement o-rings (one in one size, and another in smaller size (which I have yet to figure out where it goes)), and a bottle "spring-clip" which allows you to hook the hose to a bottle or reservoir. Make sure you put the "bottle-clip" on the hose before you put the plastic cap on as I had a bit of an adventure getting it on. It comes in a carrying-case to keep it all together.

After reading the instructions you will discover that you need to do an initial pumping to get the "ceramic dust" out of the system. After doing that I taste-tested the water and there was no funky taste or smell. It was crystal clear and had no odor whatsoever.

I own this product and would would highly recommend putting it high on my consideration list if I were shopping for a water-filter.

Customer Review: Incredible Deal
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

This is the most amazing water filter on the market. If you are looking for a cheap piece of junk with a plastic handle that might break, buy any of the others on the market. This is used around the world. I have used it in the US and abroad. My friend convinced me since he had used it on a mission trip in the Philippines. I talked to a guy who, while in Utah, could not find anything better than a mud puddle to drink from. He pulled out his Pocket Katadyn and it worked great. Other filters have a relatively short life span. Think about this. The Pocket has possibly a 13,000 gallon life on one filter. If you were to use this filter to pump only one gallon a day, you would need to buy a new filter element 35 years later. That's assuming your not normally drinking from a mud puddle. Even when the filter gets hard to pump and dirty, all you have to do is open it up and clean it out and it will pump smoothly again. If you consider the life span of this pump it may be the cheapest filter on the market. But if you are one of those people that like to buy cheap things that break and have to be replaced buy one of the cheap filters out there.

True this one is a little heavier, but it is worth having a filter that will work and has a metal handle so you won't have to worry about breaking it. Although if you do drop it on a rock it is possible to break the filter element. So caution is still needed.

I added the Carbon charcoal extension that enables you to drink from virtually any source. The extension was only around 10 to $12.

This is the best filter on the market.
Well worth the money.

Customer Review: The ROLLS ROYCE of Water Filters
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I have been on various expeditions, extended-hunts and camps, and no matter where I go, the Katadyn Pocket Microfilter is in my backpack! Yes, it is PRICEY...but the quality is clearly apparent the moment you get it out of the pack. It is VERY well made, and by using a ceramic monolithic stone filter, you don't have to worry about needing to buy more elements, or wondering exactly what is getting through to your water supply! I don't care where in the world you are, this filter works WELL!

The paperwork says it filters down to .2 microns in particle size...which is everything but viruses. Simple, just pump filter your water...and if you think your water supply is virus-compromised, then boil the filtered water to eliminate viruses too. Easy!

The package is very nice, including the tote-bag, the pick-up (which includes a mesh rough-filter bobble-head), the out-flow hose, the cleaning kit and the instructions. The monolithic ceramic stone can be cleaned...and is good for 10,000-13,000 gallons, if used properly (that's a person's lifetime water supply, nearly!)

You may see the other filters, and might want to go with them. Good luck. I don't trust ANYTHING but the Katadyn Pocket. It is smaller than a shaving bag, fits in my backpack, and I trust the filter to give me clean clear water...every time.

Customer Review: You get what you pay for
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

My first cheaper, lighter, pump filter cracked on the second day of a week of backpacking on Isle Royale Natl. Park - which has cysts among other biologicals in the water. It was the first time I ever used it after testing it with tap water at home. More pressurized, UNfiltered water sprayed out the crack than into my canteen. Filling a canteen took forever, but it could have been much worse if it didn't filter at all. Carrying fuel for boiling was out of the question. Buy this Katadyn and never worry about your drinking water again. How much is NOT having intestinal distress worth when you are on vacation and far from medical care or meds? THe Red Cross has used them to filter water in Africa for sixty years with no failures. Save your pack weight somewhere else, the extra pound that this filter weighs is well worth the assurance of safe water it affords. Filter your water from the top of the source to avoid the bottom sediment and it will last for generations. This filter is so reliable that you don't need to carry a backup unless you are absent minded and likely to leave it by the stream after filling your canteen. I have the decades old, white model, but it still works like new.

Customer Review: It's a water filter
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I have owned or used many of the various filters on the market over the years. They all do pretty much the same thing to one degree or another. Some are better than others. Some have features which may make them more appealing to certain folks that may be seen as a detriment by other folks. You pay your money you take your own point of view. I finally broke down and coughed up the dough for a Katadyn not too long ago. I still have a perfectly serviceable MSR Waterworks and have been satisfied with it overall. I've also owned a few Volkswagens in my day but would love to own a Mercedes. This is a very well designed and engineered filter. It's been on the market for decades with very little change in it's design. In that time it has been at the forefront of portable water filtration technology and is considered by many to be a benchmark for comparison. I grant that I sound like a corporate shill spouting these platitudes but in an age and society where "disposable" and "engineered obsolescence" are regrettably industry standards, it's good to find a product that bucks the trend.
