It is effective against bacteria and protozoa and also reduces chemicals and bad taste. Ceramic filters have a micro porous structure with impregnated silver which delays the growth of bacteria. The pore-size of Katadyn ceramic filters is 0.2 micron (0.0002 mm). Bacteria range in size from 0.2 to 5 micron and, like protozoa (1 to 15 micron), are efficiently filtered out. Ceramic filters can be mechanically regenerated and the filter capacity is measurable.
Activated carbon is used for its ability to reduce harmful organic and inorganic substances in the water. It removes unpleasant tastes, odors, chlorine, pesticides (lindane, DDT) and trihalomethanes (THMs). These substances adhere to the large surface area of the activated carbon. Activated carbon granulate cannot be regenerated.

We regularly train in an area that has a few untreated wells intended for horses. While very clear, it is nasty sulfur water with God knows what else in it. This filter may be used w/o charcoal in the filter, however, if you have the additional problem of sulfur, use the charcoal for "Tap Quality Water" or better.
TIP: If filtering water from a spigot you will need to run it into a reservoir of some type for collection tube to be submersed. I used a plastic drink bottle w/top cut off.

i have had my katadyn combi since 1995 it gives you not only safe drinking water but good tasting with the carbon filter and it's cheaper then the katadyn pocket filter made of plastic but it's really tough. i found if you use a coffee filter on the hose the ceramic filter lasts longerCustomer Review: Best filter for your epk

For the money, there isn't a better filter on the market. I carry the heavier duty pocket filter when backpacking, but this is always available in my home for any unplanned water disruptions. The Katadyn Combi gives you the filter life of the Katadyn Pocket for a lot less money. True it isn't made of all metal, but it is sturdy. The bottle top adapter works well and it is easy to disassemble. Great product.Customer Review: Excellent!

A quality product designed to do exactly what it is described to do. However, not meant to be your primary source during survival times. Look for something more for that. One comment regarding taste. You need to lubricate the seals between uses so that gives it a slight taste. But it's good to have when you are dying of thirst.
