This is actually the second time I bought this toy for my son. He is now seven and had the first one since he was 3 or 4 years old. When he was younger he did not care for the plastic boards, which ultimately broke. They are a little hard to fit together or take apart for a younger child, and do not fit easily into the carry case.
However, that being said, even without the boards, he loved playing with the ice surface and players. He would re-enact Bruins games and do the play by play. As he grew, he wanted to have the side boards again and would often build them with blocks. He plays with this toy so often that I wanted to give him a chance to have a new one now that he was older.
I love the fact that it is not an electronic game but rather one that encourages his imagination. I think of them as the sports fans version of old fashion army men. My son also has the Baseball and football version of this toy. His favorite is definately the hockey as it has the puck that adds more to the play. The other two only come with the players to be repositioned on the playing fields.

Let me tell you... Santa brought many toys as usual.. and even with all of the battery powered light flashing ones under the tree this was by far the favorite for our four year old. Literally, we didn't hear a word out of him for several hours once we set it up. Best 25 bucks we ever spent. If it wasn't sold out everywhere I would buy a set for both grandparents houses and to keep in the car for when we go to restaurants.. he likes them that much! If you can find it and your kids like sports- get it!
The pieces are well made - the walls of the rink are a little fragile against too much 'checking', we had to do some repairs with hockey tape but that works just fine!

I got this set for my boys, aged 2 and 4, for Christmas and it's far and away their favorite! My oldest is very "Type A" and gets extremely frustrated when toys don't stand up properly, or don't work like they should. Aside from the crinkly mat (I didn't even bother giving it to him, as it doesn't flatten nicely, and would make the guys fall over), the boards fit together securely, and all of the players are balanced and stand up easily.
He's been playing with this for over an hour and I haven't once heard him make a noise from downstairs. This is THE BEST toy for hockey fanatic kids ... especially those who are more finicky!

We purchased the hockey guys from Amazon back in July for our son's birthday &
I have to say it's the best $25 we ever spent. Our son is 5 years old and plays ice hockey
2-3 times a week. He loves this set and plays with it on a daily basis especially
when we're watching a pro game on tv. It's also great for demonstrating what certain
hockey terms mean. I HIGHLY recommend this if your child is interested in ice hockey!!

I could have written the other review myself. I have 2 boys, now ages 9 and 4, but we have had the "sports guys" for years; the hockey guys are the newest additions to our collection. We also have soccer, football, and baseball, and all have been played with basically all the time. We always take a set on vacation with us as well, in case of "rainy indoor days." I cannot speak highly enough of these toys, and often recommend them, especially to other moms of sports-obsessed boys.
