Sports reviews of Kaito KA404 Emergency Hand Crank Dynamo 5-LED Flashlight with AM/FM radioCustomer Review: Some unfulfilled promises Sport shop rating: 3 Stars
The light works well, the unit has decent charge capacity, and it is surprisingly more sturdy than it looks. The radio works, but because it is tuned via a plastic knob, is somewhat touchy. The siren isn't loud enough to be very useful in most situations, but it could come in handy if you can't speak for some reason but need help from people nearby.
Some users have complained about the durability of the hand crank; I have seen no such issues, and although it looks strange in use (the entire black disk on the back, not just the smaller handle, rotates to generate electric charge), functions fine and is quite sturdy.
The 'unfulfilled promises' mentioned in the title refer to the USB capabilities - both charging the unit through a USB connection, and charging other devices using power stored in the unit. Although it ships with a cable that has a female USB port which connects to either the 'power in' or 'power out' slots on the device, the cable by itself does nothing either way. This is true even if you have something that is able to transmit 5V through a male USB connector.
I contacted Kaito USA to confirm this, and the response I received was as follows:
-- Please note the USB cable that comes with the flashlight won't work by
-- itself. In order to charge your cellphone or other devices with the hand
-- crank, you would need another piece of USB cable as if you were to connect
-- your device to a computer.

Most likely the 'other pieces' referred to are those sold with the other version of this device sold on Amazon (link follows); however, I can neither confirm nor deny that this is the case.
Summary: If you want this product but want to be able (in theory) to use any USB capabilities, buy the Kaito KA404R Emergency Dynamo 5-LED Flashlight with AM/FM radio & Siren, which has the accessories required.
Customer Review: Useful, but with an annoying defect Sport shop rating: 3 Stars
I bought this because I plan on doing some extended hiking this summer, and it seemed like quite a useful thing to have on the trail. I got a chance to test it out this last week due to the large snowstorms we received that left my home without electricity. I must say that all the features work as indicated and to my satisfaction. I listened to the entire Super Bowl on this with only about 15 minutes total cranking time having to stop once at a commercial break and crank it again for a few minutes. I really only have one complaint about this product, but it is one that can be quite a hassle and one that I ran into, quite literally, after pulling it out of the box. The handle that one uses to crank the charger is attached to the unit with only a small, metal pin. Unfortunately, the pin does not stay in place and can easily move around so that it does not keep the handle in place. The first time that I went to charge it the handle came off and the pin fell to the ground. It took me about twenty minutes to find it in my carpet. If I had been outdoors it would have rendered this totally unusable because you cannot generate any sort of charge without it. After a while I became accustomed to always checking the pin was secure and in the correct position, but it still ended up on the ground four more times over the course of a week. Other than that, however, the product works well and just as it was described.
Customer Review: Disappointed in Brightness; Radio Works Well Sport shop rating: 3 Stars
I was expecting more brightness from this flashlight, considering it has 5 lights as opposed to others with only 3. To my surprise, this flashlight is not nearly as bright as the cheap 3 light wind-up flashlight I bought my toddler. I have also been disappointed in how quickly it loses its brightness/requires more winding up. That being said, it is a decent flashlight and feels sturdy/well made. The radio works extremely well, which is one of the main reasons for me buying it (for use in an emergency kit). Not a bad deal for the money, but I don't know if I'd buy again.
Customer Review: Adequate Sport shop rating: 3 Stars
I bought this hoping I'll never need it. I tried it out when it arrived to make sure it worked, and it did. The quality feels like something you'd get for free with a company logo on it for stopping by that company's booth at a conference or trade show. For the price I guess that's OK.
Customer Review: radio? Sport shop rating: 3 Stars
Got this for my 3 boys - 9 and under. The siren screams, the light, flashes, but the radio isnt the best. hard to get a station on it.
