Sports reviews of Iron Gym Total Upper Body Workout BarCustomer Review: Very happy with it. Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I received this item for Christmas 2008 and am very happy with it. If properly assembled it can easily support the recommended load. I weigh about 215 and typically do about 10-15 pull-ups per set. The bar feels solid even when doing these quickly with some swinging motion.
Although I think it's a good product, there are some things I'll mention, that aren't a concern to me, but may be of interest to other potential buyers:
1) Due to the pressure and friction on the door frame, the pads contacting the frame can leave a black mark--especially noticeable on white door frames. Placing a piece of tape over the area or something similar may fix this--I just use it on a dark door frame.
2) After doing several pull-ups, my upper palms begin to hurt slightly and some small calluses are beginning to form. I think the problem is the bar is too small in diameter for my hands. If I cared enough I suppose I could use gloves or find some other solution.
3) Works fine for pull-ups and push-ups, but don't kid yourself, you cannot do dips on this thing. If that's important to you, consider a different product.
Overall this is a good product which I would recommend. The problems I've encountered (above) are minor won't affect the quality of your workout.
Customer Review: I have been needing something like this a long time! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
The Iron Gym is great! It is a pull-up and push-up bar in one. I have been using it for about a week and I could not be happier. I can only do 3-8 pullups right now, depending on which grip I use but in time I expect to be doing 10-15. I am using this with the P90X workout DVD's, and this is a cost-effective pull-up bar in comparison to the one that P90X sells.
Pros:
1. Can easily hold my weight (170 lb) without any damage to my doorframe.
2. Three different grips - Wide, narrow, and neutral - provide a variety of exercises for both pull-up and push-up.
3. Can be pulled off the doorframe and set on the floor for push-ups in about 2 seconds flat.
4. Appears to be very sturdy and has comfortable neoprene grips.
5. You can get a GREAT upper body workout with this.
Cons:
1. The advertised Ab Straps are NOT included: You have to mail in for them and pay the $8 shipping and handling.
2. Not much range of motion for dips. You're better off using a chair. You will get much more out of a chair than the Iron Gym for dips.
3. Has limited range of doorframes it can fit. I was able to find one in my condo that it works with but it's too wide or too small for most doorframes. Works best with a doorframe around 28-30" wide.
Customer Review: Exactly as described Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
I saw a few people complaining about their door molding not working with the iron gym. It tells you in the description what the door requirements are, & works just as described on my 27" wide door with 3/4" molding. It's a great workout any way you look at it. I put mine on the bathroom door so that everytime I go to the bathroom, I do 4-5 pull-ups at least. I got this 2 weeks ago to help me get ready for Basic Training in the Army & I'm already past the minimum physical requirements for upper body (13 push-ups, 17 sit-ups) & hoping to triple that before I leave. Works great if you put forth the effort. 5 stars.
EDIT: It's been a few months now, & I'm in significantly better shape now. I do have one complaint that puts this thing down to 3 stars though. When positioning the Iron Gym to do sit-ups, it requires WAY too much focus on your legs to keep it from slipping up or out of place. There's nothing but gravity holding it down, & with sit-ups your feet & legs always want to go up. So I ended up having to put 2 screws just above where I position it to keep my feet down. It's still easily removable, but did require drilling screws in the molding for me. Also, put duct tape around the bar where it meets the side of your door molding, or it will leave black marks.
Customer Review: Worth Every Penny! Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Very impressive! No more holes to drill or screws damaging the door jam in my rented apt. What a slick idea! Plus, all the tools needed to put it together are included in the box!
I put it up when I need it and take it down whenever I want. It fits both my bedroom door and my bathroom door which is narrower. Plus one of my doors is right up against the wall and it even works there, i just move it off center in the door and it works just fine.
I was worried that it wouldn't hold my 245 lbs or that it would damage the door but nope, it uses leverage so it isn't pulling down the door jam with all my weight.
The other thing that really impressed me was the booklet that came with it. Very clearly written (not a pseudo English translation), with all the important exercise and diet info to get in shape the right way.
As I read this booklet, it occurred to me that anyone who actually does what they say in there would get into some seriously good shape in like 3 months.
It's all right there, boiled down to the basics. I've already lost 10 lbs since I got it. (No, I'm not affiliated with them in any way, just impressed) Well, my problem has always been the discipline, but 3 months seems do-able so here goes!
Customer Review: Amazing value...amazing product Sport shop rating: 5 Stars
Don't let the price fool you...this is a serious piece of workout equipment. Even if you only use it for the chin-up function. I got this for my p90x journey and let me just say, this little bar is great! I found it at our local Sports Authority for $29.99 without the straps, but the free coupon was inside. Got home and had it installed in under 10 minutes. I was concerned after putting it together that it did seem a little cheapo, but I was soon proven wrong.
Once I had it in the door frame I must admit, I was a little nervous for the first pull-up. I'm no physics major so it looks like this thing is for sure going to fall off the door and plop you right on your face. I weigh 185ish and as others have stated here, I believe it can hold the full 300 it says. Hanging from the bar, and keeping my legs up/crossed, there I hung from my door frame! Then I tried to pull myself up...won't go into that here :o)
The Iron Gym never moved, or gave any indication it was going to fail.
Definitely worth your cash if you are looking for another alternative than spending hundreds or trying to hang something from your floor joists in your basement.
