The Illuminator is self Powered Light/Radio/Cell Charger utilizes a crank which is folded against the back of the light for power. Turning the crank charges a set of small internal rechargeable cells which then provide power to the rest of the built-in systems. The lighting portion of this device consists of three 5mm LEDs behind focusing lenses. However, there is also an FM radio and a siren. The light is bright. The radio works well, though you can't see what station you're on. The phone charger works well with my Nokia, but doesn't have any attachments for other brands. Overall, I'm very pleased, since Brookstone has a similar light for $50.Customer Review: flashlight

I needed a battery-less flashlight, a few extra features would have been a plus. This illuminator is a hardy piece, I was pleased to see the build quality. Children are quite fascinated by the crank and the alarm functions. The radio quality was surprisingly good, at times one doesn't get a good reception and at other times it's very clear.
As someone mentioned here, to be able to charge the mobile phone, you must keep cranking while charging, this is a bit of a bother, but then one would not be doing this on a regular basis. Also, one can attach adapters for various mobile models to the provided cable in order to charge different phone models. I have tested a LG phone and a Sony Ericsson model using adapters.
I didn't find the torch very bright, and there is no documentation as to how much cranking is needed for how many minutes of power. I guess one will have to use it and learn by experience.
For me, the best thing about this is no batteries! I haven't had this product very long but I am happy with my purchase. While I don't see too many emergency situations, I think one can find many uses for the Illuminator by using one's imagination.
