I'm a convert to Icetrekkers Diamond Grips. Loved Yaktrax for their traction while shoveling snow off a steep driveway. Have used my Yaktrax (a gift) about a dozen times. But their durability has been disappointing due to poor design and unsuitable material. A rubber link that wraps under the shoe has snapped and other rubber links are thinning and/or cracking--about to go. Now, knowing that durability is a Yaktrax issue, I checked competitors' offerings and customer reviews and decided to switch to Icetrekkers. I'm glad I did.
Re design: The genius of Icetrekkers Diamond grip is that metal chains wrap under the shoe so no rubber meets the road. On Yaktrax, where the rubber links wrap under the shoe, the rubber meets the road and gets abraded.
Re materials: Icetrekkers's rubber looks industrial strength compared to Yaktrax's which need to be beefed up.
Icetrekkers also fit a little higher up the shoe so have a better grip of the shoe and stay on unlike my Yaktrax. On a couple of occasions, one Yak has slipped off.
I do wonder about both brands' use of rubber for it deteriorates over time from the effects of ozone in the air (I think that's what invisibly weakens rubber). Perhaps spraying the rubber with a coating of Armor-All protector would keep the rubber supple and flexible. It's worth a try.
