Customer Review: A step down from the ubiquitous standard club set

This set is very disappointing. While well weighed on the bottom, the pieces seem HOLLOW on top, which gives them an insubstantial feel (and clinky sound). I wouldn't want to see the results if, in the heat of a blitz battle, one of these hits the floor. In addition, I would have expected these pieces to be more matt in their finish and less plastic-y. Finally, the pawns are strangely elongated relative to standard Staunton proportions. (While not clear from the picture, the pawns are just about the same height as the rooks.) Compare this to the standard-issue ubiquitous "club" set which in the standard SOLID matt version sells for peanuts and in the weighted version (also solid) sells for half of this Marshall set and has none of the flaws mentioned. If it would have cost another $15 - 20 bucks or whatever to manufacture this set correctly, I wish House of Staunton would have done so. I actually think that there is an absolute benefit to plastic over wood in almost all tournament settings (hence most expensive wood sets only languish in closets), and I would be happy to spend more for something superior to garden-variety pieces. In this case, however, I regrettably spent twice as much for an inferior product and will continue to use my old standard club set.

This set is based on our famous Marshall design and is a VERY accurate reproduction. The look of this heavily weighted set has been strongly influenced by those manufactured by Jaques of London Chessmen from the early 1900s.This full-tournament sized set features a 3.75" King, weighs an incredible 52 ounces and includes 4 Queens (the additional 2 Queens are not included in the weight calculation.) The design and feel of these Chessmen make them ideal for both Tournament and Rapid Play (Blitz) Chess. The design, quality and craftsmanship of this set is UNMATCHED by any set of Chessmen in its price range. Nothing even comes close!
These Chessmen are new and each set consists of 34 Chessmen, 17 light and 17 dark (including the two additional Queens.)
The set was named after the legendary US Chess Player Frank Marshall, who was the United States Chess Champion from 1909-1936, a reign of 27 years that is unlikely to be equaled. Frank was one of the original Chess Grandmasters, a title that was granted by Russian Tsar Nicholas II in 1914.
