This is a great product and is absolutely necessary for anyone who walks their dog on a leash, no matter what type of neighborhood you live in. We have owned a can of Halt since we were chased by dogs while biking in the rural area where we used to live. Today was the first time we had to use it. My husband and I were out with family, all our dogs, and our 1-week old baby when we were charged by a large, intact male pitbull. The ultrasonic repellant we had did not work, so I sprayed the dog with Halt before it could show it's teeth. The dog showed discomfort immediately but did not exhibit pain, which I consider to be a great feature. After three or four sprays it stopped charging at us and ran home to it's owners, who were sitting on their porch watching their huge dog charge at a group of people with a stroller. They shouted profanities at us (classy, really), much like the experience of another reviewer here, but we kept on walking towards home while we called the cops. So, yes, spray the dog and get moving lest you end up having to spray the owners as well.
A note: I mentioned before that I was pleased that the dog did not show pain by yelping or crying. I think this is appropriate since, when you think about it, the fault really lays with the stupid owner for allowing their aggressive dog to roam free. It's not the dog's fault that they have a stupid, ignorant, uncaring owner.
