Customer Review: Demolition Derby - Turtle-Style...

HABA Rolling Turtles are so much fun that my son-in-law enjoys them as much as his 8-month old son does! Of course, the two have entirely differing play styles. The older family member loves to race these turtles along the hard floors and crash them into one another - to his son't delight! However, his son much prefers banging two balls together or gnawing on the bases' wheels. I'm sure he'll begin participating in Turtle Demolition Derby within the year.

Because these are made of birch and finished with a non-toxic sealant, there are no concerns about splintering or harmful chemical effects. The dye that has been used on the wheels and larger balls is translucent - the grain of the birch does show through although not much except on the yellow turtle. This can prove quite interesting when the turtles are moving as the large ball will rotate and the grain pattern changes as the turtle progresses. The large balls are interchangeable, so we have been working with our little one on matching colors and showing him contrast and color-coordination. I do realize that at 8 months, he probably doesn't grasp the larger concept, but it is a good way to interact which doesn't bore the adults playing with him. We also ask for a particular color ball and always say "thank you" when one is handed or rolled to us, even if it is the wrong color. If it is the non-requested color, we may say "thank you for the blue ball, please give me the yellow one." When the ball is handed or rolled back, we say "you're welcome." Again, it's early but if we hope to have our grandson understand the importance of using the "magic words" then it's time to get started.

I definitely recommend this particular toy. Further, I'll say that my initial reaction was that these were not very useful toys, but I've changed my mind. Now, if you'll pardon me, I have to see whether Red Turtle is going to beat Blue Turtle in a race across the kitchen!
