First of all, a handful of plastic forks/spoons/knives may be all you need on a campout or even a backpack trip.
But this item is actually better than that. The spork (spoon/fork) & spatula/knife snap together and weigh almost nothing, so I consider it one item to carry or pack along. In this one compact item you can eat soup, cut and eat a steak, cook and turn an egg, eat all those freeze-dried and reconstituted food packets, etc..
There are many 'spork' designs out there. Remember, a spoon is perfect for soup, and a fork is needed for spaghetti, so a 'spork' is a compromise with neither function at it's best. So the idea is to put both functions into one utensil as best you can, and I think this one does it well. The tines on the fork are long enough to 'spear' foods, and the round deep spoon shovels liquids well. The spatula/knife works great too. All edges are sharp and one is serrated. I like it because I can cut things in a bowl or inside a cup by pushing down with the flat sharp front edge of the spatula. I actually use this at home to eat my sausage, eggs and hash-brown breakfasts. So if I like it at home, it must be a great product to have away from home in a pocket in my backpack!
