We have two 90 lb dogs, a German Shepard mix born in Colorado and a Mastiff mix from Washington. We have tried a bunch of boots in order to decrease the snow build up and protect the dog's paws while backcountry skiing in the Rocky or Cascade mountains. Most boots either fall off or tend to slip on the snow and ice.
After trying various different dog boots over the last decade we have concluded that the Granite Gear endurance and mush dog booties work the best. They stay on the dog's paw and provide good traction under most circumstances. The exception may be solid ice, on which the traction of all dog boots and I would say all human boots seem to provide suboptimal traction. I would recommend the mush dog booties for more active snow adventures as the climbing skin sole does a particularly nice job of providing traction on snowy trails. The endurance boots are great for non-snow/ice adventures, i.e. hiking, or for shorter walks in the winter.
Most dogs often walk with a hilarious high-step silly walk when the boots are initially placed on their paws but give them time and they seem to settle down. It is often initially advantageous to distract the dog, with a ball, toy or treat, but once the dog gets used to the boots they work great.
For those reviewers that bitch about only receiving two booties, read the product description. It says in plain english under the product description on the amazon site that the boots are sold in sets of two. This is so you can replace worn out or lost boots without buying an entire new set.
You may have to experiment with adjacent sizes to get the correct fit, i.e. large versus extra large. Have patience and find the right size for your dog.
If you are looking for a good quality dog boot for serious outdoor adventures in the snow or just a walk around the block in the heart of winter these are great boots for that purpose.
Description of Granite Gear Mush Booties
These boots are designed for traction on snow. They utilize the same ergonomic design and materials as our Endurance Dog Boot with the exception of the sole which is built with the same fabric used in climbing skins for backcountry skiing. They mimic the natural directional texture of a dogs paw. Run a finger across the pad from front to back and the pad feels smooth, run your finger from back to front and you can feel the grip, just like climbing skins! Two per package.Sports and Outdoors
