*** I'm providing a review of the Stormshield map case (15.75 x 12.75). The reviews under this item are a little tricky because the three size options listed for this item actually refer to three distinct Granite Gear map cases. ***

I purchased the Stormshield map case (15.75 x 12.75) prior to a trip up to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) with my wife. I've spent a lot of time in a canoe, but have normally been only one member of a group on such trips, and as such typically kept my map in an oversized zippered storage bag. Since all the navigation fell to me on this trip, I wanted a decent map case. I have a friend who purchased the Stormshield map case (15.75 x 12.75) a few years ago, and he was very pleased with it, so I decided to get my own.

I was not disappointed. The Stormsheld (15.75 x 12.75) did fit my Fisher maps just as described, and the hook and loop closure on the back kept things snug and dry. The straps were great for hanging it on the thwart in front of me, and I didn't need to worry either about rain or water dripping off my paddle as I switched from side to side. I kept my compass inside the case as well, so, when it was time to check my bearings I simply lifted up the bottom end of the case and took a look at the map and my compass heading. It was simple, and it removed any chance that my compass would be broken as someone stepped into the canoe (as had happened on a previous trip when I had the map and compass in a zippered storage bag that was not tied down).

As to durability, I love the nylon back because I don't have to worry about laying the case out on a big rock to discuss the route with other paddlers. We were out early in the season, so the case was exposed to sub-freezing temperatures without any problems. Since bringing it home, it's gotten buried in piles of gear and emerged unscathed. I don't have any delusions about the plastic side being bulletproof, but with a little regular care I expect to be using mine for the next 15-20 years.

I specifically chose the Stormshield (15.75 x 12.75) model for the nylon back, the hook-loop closure, and the hanging straps. I cannot attest to the quality or durability of other models (the other sizes) that rely only on plastic zipper closures. I wanted the features of this model for the purpose of durability, and I'm please with what I received. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND USING THE STORMSHIELD (15.72 x 12.75) MAP CASE.

Description of Granite Gear Map Case

The stormshield fits either McKenzie or Fisher canoe country maps folded in quarters. It attaches to canoe thwarts and portage packs with hook and loop fastener. Our map cases are built with heavy-duty vinyl and 210-denier nylon.
