Customer Review: Put It In Your Backpack!
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

It's Winter in Wisconsin, so I didn't go out in the cold and snow to try it out to make a fire. But I did (carefully in a metal pan) start a small piece of kleenex on fire in our basement so I know it works, and works easily and beautifully. It's one of those items that I bought and will almost definitely never need, yet if I ever do get caught out overnight while doing a hike somewhere, I know I will not be without fire. I put it with other emergency pieces inside my backpack with a small cheap pocket knife (you need this to create the spark)and that's where I will leave it except for "play" fire starting (like to impress friends in an outdoor fire pit), or when it's needed for the real thing.

How can you claim to be a hiker/adventurer if you can't make a fire without a lighter or matches?!!!

Customer Review: Good Combo
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

I bought this with the Army edition Fire steel. super deal together! Use the magnesium for it's scrapings for tinder, have the firesteel that sparks 12000 times, good combo! And the army edition lite my fire firesteel is THICK! some of them look flimsy like they could snap, but not this one. Its even better than its picture, its super thick. I really wonder if it could light 12000 times, i think it might be able to. with magnesium scrapings for tinder, you can start a fire even when its raining. Good deal. Also you can use the mag stick by itself, with its firescraping tool. But it obviously wouldn't last as long as a fire steel firestarter. It all depends on what you are looking for, so just think about what you need and form your own informed opinion. Both have good qualities.

Customer Review: Must have for the adventurous
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

The first post nailed it on the money. Dont waste your money on "lighter weight"(lol really? as small as this is, you want a smaller 1 for triple the amount?) or blended sticks. This $5 dollar puppy outshines those $20+ dollar ones by a landslide. Its an easy scrape (not carve), with a solid flint shave and your in business. A must have for the adventurous, this is your best friend if the going gets tough. And if your like me you want something by your side you can trust with your life as you tackle your adventure head on. I suggest this and the p-38 as two cheap but life changing tools in the survival world.

Customer Review: This was the hands down best in the Boy Scouts
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

A decade or so ago when I was in the Boy Scouts this was, in the opinion of my troop, so good it was like cheating. It was more difficult to start a fire with a single match (which is how the scouts roll; one scout one match) than this. Also it put my little firesteel flint to shame.

I cannot for life of me figure out how people can think this is not the greatest fire starter. We used the backs of the blades our 3" folding knives to scrape off a decent pile of magnesium and then scrape the flint for sparks. The result was always white hot sparks and fire. It never failed. YMMV

Customer Review: For emergency situations...
Sport shop rating: 5 Stars

We bought this item to use in emergency situations, should we need to light a fire while camping/backpacking (or the like). This is better than matches since you don't have to worry about it getting wet and not working (like matches). It is quite small and flat, and it is easy to store in your pack or First Aid Kit, etc...

PS: Plz note that when using this, you have to really spark it hard. Don't give up if it does not light-up the first time you try, because it does eventually ignite once you get the friction going.
