Customer Review: Fritz isn't on the fritz, it's Outstanding

If you're serious about improving your chess, the ChessBase products of which Fritz is the flagship are outstanding. The interface is the BEST available: it's attractive, it's easy to use, it's highly modifiable, and the 3-D sets are among the best. The program's playing strength can easily be adjusted and can be set to match your ability. Fritz's star features for me are its many training features. For instance, my study of chess openings is done by using Fritz not the dozen books I own on the topic.
I have owned every Fritz version since number 5, and I will continue to purchase each new version as a statement of its quality and value. I primarily use the Fritz interface with the Rybka chess engine (currently the strongest chess program) because the interface allows me to add UCI chess engines such as Rybka to the program. In fact, I have over a dozen chess engines available when I start Fritz 11 (including Shredder,Junior, Tiger, plus many more), I can play against any of them and have the others kibitz the game. Tournaments are easy to setup and conduct with a combination of human and computers players. Want to setup a special chess position, Fritz's interface makes it super easy. If it sounds like I admire the program's interface, I do! As I mentioned earlier this Fritz is definitely not "on the fritz".

Get ready for a weird concept: I gave Fritz 11 5 stars and I meant it, however I do NOT recommend you buy it! Try to understand me here. If you were going to trim your lawn on your little 1/4 acre lot, you wouldn't go out and get a riding mower, or probably a better example, a farm combine would you? The same applies here, unless you are a titled player and or paid chess journalist you do not need this. It would be like getting "Jet Lee" to spare with a 10 year old Taekwondo white belt. Beyond that, even experienced players and savvy users are going to be simply overwhelmed by so many features and sub features. It's so bad, that it borders on making it unusable. It's like these stupid "smart phones" they can do everything but brush your teeth for you, but most of us just want to dial a number and have a clear connection. 85% per cent of people who might buy this just want to play chess. Sadly, you are getting that plus a lot more, too much more.Customer Review: Update to the new Fritz? Maybe.....maybe not...

I would say the most important new feature of Fritz 11 - to the practical, average player - is the calculation training mode which allows you to make moves on the board without moving the pieces recording your move orders (even illegal moves!) within a game: so you have a record of how clear your tactical thinking is. I think you should visit Chessbase.com to see a video example of this mode in action. It's quite cool.
For me, calculation training is worth it because I use it. I think it helps me improve my ability to test my capacity to visualize variations and later see if they were correct. However, if you're unimpressed with this mode or simply doubt you'll use Fritz 11 for this purpose, then probably you'd be better off with the very similar and far cheaper Fritz X. The chessboards (which are quite attractive, both in 2D and 3D), the othertraining functions, fairly similar.

A bit overwhelming at first due to so many options. A bit of a learning curve to the software but the manual that comes with it is easy to understand. What I like the most about it, is the ability to analyze your games to find where you might have made blunders and how to improve your skills. The ability to view worldwide chess tournaments online while they are occuring is also a great plus. Well worth the money spent for the software, plus a whole year free access to Chessbase.com, you just can't beat it. ABOUT the ENGINE.
There are some algorithms, from Deep fritz 10.
Fritz 11 are better for much from his predecessor, i made a engine match Fritz 10 vrs Fritz 11, five minutes bliz game. Won Fritz 11 (W=3, D=0, L=1)
The bad news, fritz 11 are not the best engine on market. F11 loses agaist another engine (W= 0, D=4, L=2). For Amazon policies i can't revealed the engine.
(The bliz game is only to give an idea)
ABOUT THE OPENING BOOK, Fritz 11's book are twice of bigger, from his predecessor.
BONUS FROM CHESS BASE
F11 is a Great deal, it has two new training option, that you will enjoy. Combination training, fritz help you to calculation the position and Tactical training, Fritz gives puzzles, for five minutes.
In this DVD, ChessBase, given you, two hours in several clips videos with Kasparov, Daniel King, Shirov, Andrew Matin and other. Maybe this is a mean to merchandize other products. Even that, is a great gift.
I do not recomend this software for kids or player who loves positional chess
