Traditional steel whistles with a cork ball can be over-blown causing a muffled sound, which can be frustrating and confusing. they can rust or the cork can decomposed with age and exposure to high humidity and moisture, they are hard to clean properly and have a tendency to stop working when wet. The immediate upgrade from that was the FOX 40 classic, which has been used by many people with plenty of success, I think they're great but I decided I wanted something louder, something more distinctive, so I bought the Sonik Blast CMG.
Compared to the fox 40 classic, it's 4 resonators have a slightly different warble than the classic and is significantly louder than the classic. It's plastic construction means you don't have to worry about chipping a tool when suddenly bringing the whistle to your mouth.
The CMG makes it a bit bulky compared to traditional ball whistles, but with time it becomes natural to hold in ones mouth. There is no right way to hold it, and it cannot be overblown apparently. At 120+dB it's Much louder than your average ball whistle. According to other ref's I've talked to they're great as loaners because their lack of a ball and plastic construction make them machine washable.
It's loud enough to make your ears ring a little if you're not experiencing threshold shift, and if you have your windows open, get peoples attention while driving down the highway (he he).
If you want the loudest whistle at the game, or for hiking, or in your emergency kit, this is the whistle for you.
