This is a very portable stove for back up in an emergency. It burns almost anything from paper debris to small sticks, and can accomplish heating up water and basic cooking tasks. You won't be able to turn out gourmet meals on this, but it does simple meal preparation when you need it to, and it doesn't take an incredible amount of space or weight to do the job.
If you are looking for a back up solution for your back pack, whether its a "survival" or recreational pack, this stove is a rock solid addition worth its weight. Anything that burns can be used as fuel, from twigs to pinecones (not long leaf pine though, they are just too big!) to paper to grass twists and manure. It folds compactly right into its case, and weighs very little, taking up about as much room as a cheap paperback novel. Its not made out of heavy duty steel and it will eventually burn out, but for a back up stove, it's perfect, whether its due to an emergency or simply running out of fuel or having a more convenient stove break down.
I think this stove is a perfect addition to any family's emergency kit, as well as any serious outdoorsman's general kit. There is nothing like a hot meal or a cup of coffee to clear up someone's mind and get back in the groove when things go wrong, and this stove works when the chips are down by just turning them into fuel.
Don't forget this stove when assembling a hurricane or earthquake kit!
